The last purchase I made from The General Trader was at their Marion store, which was a Baccarat stock pot and on sale, it was the cheapest 9ltr I could find even by Harris Scarfe standards. This made me very happy indead....mission accomplished. A great place to buy gifts as there are quite a few boxed items such as glassware and the like, which you don't need to buy individually simply just wrap and give. The store offers a rewards card whereby for each dollar spent you earn a point and once that has accumulated to 500 points, the reward will be a $25 voucher to spend in store. There is an online store for browsing and purchasing plus I found their recipe section very helpful and reasonably comprehensive.

Why bother travelling to mammoth shopping centres, pushing and shoving your way through the throngs of people and giving hard earned dollars to mass marketed chattels, instead support your local community and get to know the locals. The prices are reasonable, the staff are friendly and helpful plus offer to buy items in specially if they don't happen to have them in stock. Located in what was once considered an outer suburban dare I say 'country town', it has transformed judging by the growing number of quality housing estates popping up and thriving population. There will certainly be no shortage of demand to fill new kitchens with the latest gadgets and everything in between to fill the gaps. Also, not forgeting that last minute gift this place has an excellent range to choose from, a little something to give and not show up empty handed. My Kitchen has rescued me many times in the past and it's a good excuse to go there and pick up something for me too!

Lost in the wilderness, this department store has quickly dwindled in life and breadth of product thanks to encroaching online shopping and competitive, low cost, reasonable quality department stores capturing their consumers. You can still find the rare brand name watch, pair of shoes on sale or makeup in store at a fair price and I love still wandering through the powder puff girls and clouds of perfume on the ground floor (where else can you get such an experience). However, the range, value and poor internal workings of the place mean that it is becoming a forgotten species. This DJs in particular has lost its way, shutting down their fine dining food court and imported produce section and putting on about 1 staff member for every 100 customers so you can never find a damn sales person when you need one (or they have no interest in serving you). Displays are cluttered and floors have been crammed with so many brands you can get in their original outlets or stores that the quality and health of the David Jones "premium brand department store" is lost. The only way I can see this species being brought back from near extinction is to re-instate and connect a fine dining food court to DJ's, add in fancy change rooms, high quality service, cut half their range so high end brands (that you can't get anywhere else) are available to touch and feel and completely refit the place to feel like one of those luxe shopping centres you get in Harrods, Dubai or HK. I hope to see the "day of old" department store return, but first it has to lift it's game.

I have stood in the electrical department for longer than 30 minutes on two separate occasions waiting for someone to take my money so I could take home a new plasma tv. One guy approached me and told me he didn't deal with the particular brand I was after so he'd get someone else to help me. No-one came! A tip for you ... David Jones will price match so don't be fooled by the fact they seem more expensive than other places. They are as keen to make a sale as the next guy. Apologies for being a negative Nora but I just felt this page needed some balance.

I loved knowing about and selling these products and the store atmosphere was always great. The staff loved their jobs and we were all friends outside work because of it. They have awesome sales a couple of times a year, with most customers in disbelief of the quality and prices. But be sure to get in quick, because stuff sells out quick! Their one frivolous section is in the left corner, where they have a cute range of china sets, with little teapots and pretty cups and saucers. I often consider these for my mother, just so I can see them in use. Sadly, they wouldn't fit into my house. There is an odd range of very sparkly jewelry on a centre table, which I find a little out of place, though some of it is nice. There are other oddities like colourful kids' chairs with matching umbrellas, and scented fake flowers. It's always interesting to see what's in here at any given time.

I also like the fact there is a cafe attached to the store where they serve really tasty coffee and serve light meals such as baguettes and focaccia with fillings of your choice. For dessert or a quick fix they have muffins and cakes to wash down with a freshly roasted coffee. Their online store keeps you in touch with what's new and on sale plus it has recipes to tempt you to try and in turn they have the products to make your attempt a success.

Once you step in, you can find yourself easily narrowing yourself down to choosing something you like and can afford! You can easily be trapped because there are several things that a homebody guy like me could use here! I was like, "Mmmm...This one here is cool.....I could totally use this tonight!" I was able to play house for a little while and quench my thirst for new kitchenware...and only $4 dollars well spent, I found something that I really liked and I could take home! You got me....in your wheelbarrow, alright. Lucky for me, Wheel&Barrow's buying team travels the world to ensure that they consistently have the best professional product ranges in Australia....which means that the best home decor products are right here! Strangely enough, I always go here when I want to buy hammocks. It's the only store I've found that consistently stocks them - big sturdy ones, in bright colours, usually priced between $30 and $60 which is much cheaper than elsewhere. A genuine old school variety homewares store... worth checking out for the charm alone.

This large warehouse is absolutely packed with wine racks, coffee tables, and TV cabinets, and the artistry in the detailing is clear even to a dummy like me. My partner likes to wander in here and ponder all the lovely things he could possibly make. And by make I mean, buy or ask his dad to make for him. The warehouse smells like wood shavings and leather and makes you want to cook a roast in a country kitchen. The style in here is mostly quite traditional they obviously care more for craftsmanship than fads: you have to love old school quality. The front area of the shop has kitchen gear like mugs and Tupperware but the real 'hero' of the store is the beautiful side tables and bookcases: I don't have the budget just yet but until then, I browse.
