This is a real deal hammam where actual Turks, not tourists, come for a good scrub down. I really wanted to experience a hammam when I was in Turkey, but we didn't have enough time to go to one in Istanbul. Since we had extra time in Ankara, my husband and I decided to come to the one listed in our guide book. Sure, we could have done a "hammam" at our hotel, but this was much more authentic and housed in a centuries-old building. It was so authentic that most people didn't understand English. It all worked out though with enough pointing and pantomime. I loved getting scrubbed down with the loofah. So much dead skin came off! The scalp massage during my shampooing was nice too. Just what I needed at the end of a long trip. My husband got pretty brutalized on some hot marble, but in the best way possible. His back was killing him from all the crappy mattresses we slept on, but that night he slept soundly since his attendant was able to destroy all his knots. Went here the day before we left Turkey. It was a wonderful experience. This is a place where the local Turkish frequent. There were 5 adults and two youth in our group. When you enter you enter from the side and youth walk down a set of stairs. You will see a huge widow and this is the pay area. The lady there speaks some English. The cost: 25TL to enter and includes washing. 12TL for scrubbing/exfoliation, (if you get the oil massage at the end you will pay 1TL per min, we did 20 min) wash rag (crocheted) 5TL, exfoliation glove 10TL soap 3TL. (All total 75TL = $28.95USD) If you want to save some TL you can bring the last three items with you along with two towels) When you are done paying for your services the attendant will give you a key and take you to a room where she will give you shower shoes and several towels like Turkish clothes to cover yourself. You can leave on your bra and under wear. Some people opt to wear a bikni which is a good idea. No matter what your bottom half will be covered at all times. Once you are changed you will be led inside sauna area you will see ladies in several different rooms and areas getting different services) The first room you go to is the room where you rinse off from basins filled with warm water, the next area you are then exfloiated (you shower afterwards) . Then washed, then massaged by the same attendant. The whole inside of this area is made of marble which was really cool. If you have never been to a Turkish Bath its a must.
