We saw a docked boat pull up w/sponges & watched them spray it down with water to clean them. The sponges vary in size from small to large. Additionally, one of the food courts has a 42 ft sponge boat on display in the middle amidst restaurants and shops to checkout - very cool! The boat was even used during World War II from the Navy as a rescue boat in the Gulf of Mexico. We even heard people in the community speaking Greek. We stopped at Hellas for Greek Coffee and Baklava - it was glorious to have strong A/C flowing in the restaurant. You can even park for free after you pass the roundabout - you just need to prepare yourself to parallel park. I also saw a lot of Parking available for $3-$5/day.

Review Highlights - Tarpon Sponge

A sponge shop in America is a rare and special thing, but at the sponge docks in Tarpon Springs, there are many of them.

The saleswoman took it down off the top shelf so he could get a closer look and he immediately said he would take it. It was pretty big and we were headed to dinner a block away so the saleswoman said she would hold it for us and we could pick it up after dinner. We picked it up less than an hour later and she had already boxed it up for us. A friend who lives in FL shipped it to us but the ship the saleswoman boxed up was not the same ship. It was smaller, covered in dirt/dust, all of the lines were loose while on one side they are a total bird's nest of tangles thus too short to attach to the hook on the side of the ship. There is also a huge glob of glue on the front of the ship with nothing attached to it. Luckily I had taken a picture of the ship he chose while we were in the store but the saleswoman is now claiming that the ship he saw was broken and that she showed him a different/cheaper ship and that he opted to buy that one instead which is completely untrue. The price difference between the ship he wanted and the one she boxed up is $70 thus the price was never an issue, she never told him that the ship he wanted was broken, and she told me the price was $300 for that ship and is now saying it is $369. Had she actually showed him the ship that she ultimately boxed up, he would've immediately rejected it considering the condition it was in. We paid $299.99 which includes the 7% tax for the ship and $292 to ship it and it is basically a piece of garbage that looks like it had been sitting on a shelf collecting dust. They are also claiming that the ship they boxed up was probably damaged in transit but the wooden frame of the ship was undamaged because UPS repacked it in bubble wrap in an oversized box. She expects us to believe that the lines came loose and somehow got tangled while inside the bubble wrap in transit. There were 2 friends in the store with my husband and I when we purchased it. We have contacted the store and sent pictures but they refuse to take the ship back and issue a refund for the ship and the shipping costs. Their solution is for us to physically bring it back to their store from the other side of the country but have admitted that they do not have the original ship we purchased nor will they issue a refund. They say they will let us know if they receive another ship like the one he actually wanted and thought we had purchased. They also claim that they reviewed the video of our visit to the store thus they absolutely know that he was never shown a different ship. They should produce video proof that they showed him a different ship because that is not true. They would have gotten away with this "bait and switch" had I not taken a picture of the ship that we purchased while in the store. My advice is buyer beware when shopping at the Shell Shack. We have gone to Tarpon Springs every year for the last 10-15 years and have always shopped at the stores and never had a problem. One merchant even allowed me to walk off with a very expensive shirt to show to my husband and then bring it back. We wound up buying 4 of them. The food in the restaurants in Tarpon Springs is absolutely amazing. Our favorites are Rusty Bellies for seafood and Mykonos for Greek food. We also buy a lot of goats milk soap from the shop next door to Mykonos.
