So in all transparency, I'm rating this as a supermarket with food options, rather than just for the hot bar itself (even though that's all I sampled), which would be a 4.5. As other reviews can attest, this supermarket has all of your favorite Soviet-style products. As I was about to travel home, I did not have, for instance, any of the many variety of herrings. Instead, I went to the famous hot bar to get some snacks for my flight--kebabs or plov wouldn't travel well, so I basically used it as a bakery. The pumpkin samsa was excellent. It was a bit worse for wear as the outside was no longer crispy, but the flakiness shows how good it must have been. The pumpkin filling was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. The next day, I had a spinach qutab, which I reheated on a cast-iron. It wasn't quite as good as made-fresh, but you could tell how good the crust would have been, and how fresh the spinach still was. Given that trays of food kept coming out as I was browsing, I think this is as good as a buffet gets--it's limited only by the fact that it's a grocery store buffet/hot bar. read more

I'd never been to a Halal Uzbek supermarket before this, and my inaugural visit was eye-opening. So many new and foreign foods, sights, and smells. There's a bakery in the front left and right selling Russian pastries and breads, while the produce/fruit is at the right (and outside of the market). Fresh flowers are sold outside, along the shopping carts. There's even a small area to squeeze your own orange juice. The fresh food section (salads, soups, fish and desserts) is at the center of the market and in my opinion is the most intriguing part; I'd most likely get something here, since I'd never seen any of the foods in this section in my life. Meats are in the back, as well as a selection of nuts and packaged goods. Personally, I think most of the common goods (basic everyday fruits, drinks, and snacks) is way overpriced (Hass avos are $4 each!), but it's definitely worth checking out this place for the experience, or to buy something unique you likely haven't seen before, especially since there's not a Uzbek market on every corner. It's fairly easy to get to as well, with a bus and train stop right next to the market. We ordered the plov (rice with seasoned meat, garlic, and carrots), beef noodle soup, and packaged baklava. The Brighton Beach branch of Tashkent is definitely the most chaotic, but it's also the closest to the subway and so ends up being my most frequented. While Brighton Beach has become more Central Asian and less Russian-Jewish over the years, Tashkent offers a wide array of pan-Soviet delicacies in their hot bar that should satisfy any craving in the general vicinity. I love their pumpkin and spinach samsas and mantı (the plump Uzbek variety, not the Turkish kind), and their khachapuri is not the best in the neighborhood, but is a good as a quick to-go option for a picnic. read more

I've brought many Aussie friends here too over the years. The range of freshly prepared food is insane, the quality is great. It's clean by NYC standards. It's vibrant, always super busy and I just love it! Between visits, when NYC friends have birthdays, I shout them lunch or dinner by ordering food and cake from here having it delivered to their homes. I'm coming back in April and I cannot wait! I thought I already wrote a review for this place, but it appears I haven't. No worries-- here's what you need to know: this place is AWESOME. They have the most incredible hot bar, filled with lots of Russian and Central Asian dishes like lagman (hand pulled noodles stir-fried with vegetables and seasoned with paprika) and norin (traditionally a noodle salad made with horse meat but I think Tashkent Market's version uses shredded beef). There's also a fresh plov counter (highly recommend the Tashkent plov with the juiciest lamb around), a shawarma corner, a soup kiosk (love their rassolnik and lagman), and a bakery. On my most recent visit, I noticed they invested in a pineapple corer/slicer machine like the ones you see in Germany and an orange juicer machine as well. The market is open 24/7 and I have never seen it quiet during all the times I have dropped by. The hot bar is kept really clean and fresh dishes are always rotated in. The lines get long but move quickly since there is someone to direct you to which register is open, just like at Trader Joe's. Overall, an absolute gem and I'm excited to see them open their new outposts in Brooklyn and Manhattan! read more

Journeyed through traffic from queens on a rainy day for Tashkent market and was not disappointed. I've been to the one in queens to get my fix of their freshly made buffet goodies but had to try the heaven that was assortment in the Brooklyn location. So after months of eagerly waiting for my time to come, I finally made the trip with a friend. They are super busy and you're always squeezing through people and in someone's space or their in yours but lines move really fast at checkout so you can definitely make the trip a quick one. I, on the other hand, took my time wandering and deciding what to get because the selection is so vast it's overwhelming. Everything I tried was fire. My favorites were the cheese sigara, the egg stuffed bread/pastry, and potato stuffed bread/pastry, and the mushroom varenyky. I totally forgot the names of things because I ended up with so much stuff, but one thing to note about almost all the food is that there's not too much seasoning so nothing is really all that flavorful but it worked because the breads were just soooo good. Tried a couple of the desserts and honestly such good prices for what you get and for the size. It's by pound and I requested half a pound of two different slices of cake and it turned out to 3-4 dollars each. Knowing how cake slices are double if not triple those prices elsewhere I felt like I'd won the lottery. I hear there's a spot opening in Manhattan and if it's nearly as good as this one you bet I'll be there as often as I can. Until then I will eagerly await my return to this location o.o read more

Cheaper than Cherry Hill, the food here was a nice mix of Russian food and food from the various areas; primarily Central Asian countries as expected from the name. The buffet is not the best but it's certainly a lot better than a lot of other places. Very pro tip: Don't get your plov/palov from the hot food section. That stuff is just alright. Instead follow the massive lines which also happens to contain their dessert section and the cashier and get it from the people making it fresh in a massive pot/kazan. It might cost a few bucks more but for restaurant quality plov at a bargain, it's hard to argue. Their Samarkand plov as expected was excellent with tender beef mixed well with the rice. Sure it's a bit greasy but it's really tasty also. In terms of the desserts, the kyiv cake/kievsky was alright though lighter than the others I have had. The sour cherry smetannik was also good. The rest of the food was also fine from the pretty good fish khe to the various salads, noodles, and other dishes. The plov (specifically the Samarkand plov) probably gives this place a 4 but the unsanitary conditions from the 30,000 people not wearing a mask inside (and most of them being on one massive line) and the rest of the food being just alright drops it down a peg. read more

It was great when it first opened but has significantly gone down hill in the past year at least. Half the meat is raw (I don't understand how lyula kebab could be raw based on how it should be cooked but it was entirely raw inside, not once but NUMEROUS times), the salads are made with ingredients from their produce section that are expired or expiring which ruins the food. Fruit parfait was bitter and the fruits were rotting. Babaganoush was missing garlic altogether which is literally one of the main ingredients of the dish. Food is constantly unsalted and bland in flavor. Disappointed doesn't even begin to cover it. The only positive aspect of the entire store is that it is kept clean around the food because the workers are constantly walking around cleaning. The food itself has a ton of improvement to be made because their current cooks are obviously a bit confused on how to actually cook this food. Probably a little more convenient for those coming by car or living near the Sheepshead Bay subway stop. Great hot and cold food bar. This is the Uzbek supermarket of my dreams, namely for their impressive and tasty assortment of ready-to-eat hot and cold food options like salads, savory pastries, fish, meats, carbs, and sides. Let's start with just the plov alone. They have at least four different types: Samarkand, lamb, chicken, and Afghan (with basmati rice). The Samarkand plov is a crowd favorite. Whenever an employee brings out a fresh tray, there's always a mad dash to get there and scoop first. The rice isn't as fluffy or moist as I'd like, but I've come to realize that that's just the standard for plov. The beef is so tender and tasty, and the juices and oils really seep into the fragrant rice and make every bite flavorful. The soft, shredded carrots are especially fantastic. I've also tried the following: dry Uyghur lagman, samsas, stuffed cabbage, salmon, baby chicken tabaka, duck leg, lamb with chickpeas, fried potatoes, chicken cutlets in sweet chili sauce, and basa filet stuffed with imitation crab meat. The dry lagman is one of my favorite things here. The noodles have a great chewy texture, and the seasoning clings onto them and the bits of meat for dear life, making them very flavorful. The duck leg is tender and delicious, especially with the sauce it's glazed in. It's all pretty good though. There's a soup station where you can get your fill of borscht, kharcho, lagman... whatever your soup-loving heart desires. There's a little kompot fountain station. There's also a pickle station (love those sour cherry tomatoes), and a massive dessert section filled with things like honey cake and 3,000 varieties of sour cream cake. It's always crowded whenever I visit, and for good reason. Try to find your place in this organized chaos, stay away from the especially gruff customers, and you'll be golden. read more

They've got a good size self-serve buffet and lots of other prepared foods to go. We dropped by at 5 pm. on a Sunday. I got the lamb plov and chuchvara. Note that both dishes are heavy AKA oily as that's how they're prepared everywhere. So tasty. Reheated at home, and they tasted just like some of the best Uzbek restaurants. It was super easy in and out for takeout and priced very well. Plov is $8.99 a pound. Up take a photo of the buffet next time. My wife got a lamb gyro Uzbek style and loved it! They make sandwiches to order at a station. Produce looked phenomenal and was priced well. We also picked up some #4 Ukrainian water to drink. Love the sulfur spring water flavor. Note that they've got a 24x7 location in Brighton Beach that's far larger. This location is crazy close to the F train station. There is plenty of street and bike parking there. Once upon a time, when this store just opened, its offerings used to be with the time and money. Now, however, the quality and price remain more to be desired. The quality of buffet style, home cooked food has declined dramatically. A lot of products just sit on the display all day and are reused the next day. That led me to this market. I like how they have a variety of the honey cake. They even have a chocolate version, which is just delicious!
