A quick disclaimer: This is not a critique on the servers themselves, but rather the business as a whole. Understaffing a long-weekend Saturday is an absurd decision and leaving the entire restaurant to one server is abysmal. With that out of the way, let's get into it. Saturday evening, a group of three and I, sat down at around 5:20 to get dinner. Knowing that Taste Of Egypt typically takes longer (the first time I got lunch here I waited 45 minutes for a to-go order!) I cautioned my friends that we should get there early. No problemo. 5:320 is plenty of time to get a meal at a leisure pace and be out before 7pm. We sit, break for the bathroom, sit again and enjoy the quiet atmosphere. At the time of entry, there were maybe 2-3 occupied tables. Not a lot at all. A few minutes go by, we haven't been seen by a server. Several more minutes prompts me to flag down the server and ask for, at the very least, some water. Understandably, only three of four are at the table at this point. Regardless, we look through our menus and decide on what we'll be having. We eventually get our waters and--- We wait. And wait. And wait. You see, dear readers, it wouldn't be until 20 minutes later (give or take, I'm not counting on a stopwatch) that we would be seen again. Only because we, once again, flagged down the server to take our appetizer orders. At the same time we were hoping to put in our meal orders, but alas he skedaddled off before we had a chance to say "excuse me". When we sat down to dinner, we didn't expect this to become a whole day event. And so begins the Game Of Waiting. Truthfully, I'm not sure how long we waited. It was long enough to feel the time aging your skin, to feel your soul leaving your body as the last dregs of patience float off into the stratosphere. Perhaps around 6:20 we got our appetizers. Finally, at long last, we could put in our dinner orders. So we did. The place, by then, had begun to fill up with a few more tables. But we figured we'd be able to get our food, eat quickly and continue on our way like the weary travelers we were. Wrong! By the time 6:50 rolled around, we still hadn't seen a lick of our food. At this point, we flagged down the server again and asked to get it boxed up instead. No problem! Except there was a problem. He ventures off into the kitchens and when he returns, says the plates are ready and asks if we still want it boxed up. Heck yeah we do! We got places to be, shenanigans to sow, people to see! With that, he's off again. Honestly folks, I wouldn't have minded if he brought the plates and boxes and we did it ourselves. But 7:00 rolled around. Then 7:05. We decided to go up and pay so we could be on our way quickly. We waited there, too. One minute. Two. Five. The hostess (I assume? She certainly wasn't serving tables) flitted past us with nary an acknowledgement. 7:30 comes and I now understand the appeal of dining and dashing. There was a couple behind us in line and they got served first! Despite us waiting at the cash for 30 minutes! Absolute insanity. It was only after that 30 minute mark, by the way, that the server finally gave us our to-go boxes. 40 minutes after our request. It takes 40 minutes to box prepared food, goodness gravy. In the end, after our patience had been worn thinner than a tight rope at a circus, we paid only for what we ate and went on our way. Absolutely atrocious of management to leave a single server on duty. Do better. Treat your staff better. On a more positive note, Taco Boyz next door are very lovely. read more

My wife and I stopped here after a day-long trip to Nova Scotia, across the Bay of Fundy, back to St. John. Although very quiet by the time we arrived, the host and servers were all very warm and friendly, and the atmosphere reminded me of true Arabian architecture. We each had some herbal tea and a salad. What a great restaurant! When you enter the restaurant you feel immediately relaxed. The atmosphere from furnishings and the music are so wonderful. The young Man that greets you makes you feel so welcome! My food was so flavorful and the portions were a lot more than I had expected. The falafel was the best that I have eaten. My Greek salad had the freshest ingredients and the feta and Olives were plentiful! I wish this restaurant was closer to where I live in the US and I would eat there at least 1x a week! read more

This was the first place we ate at while we were in St John. We found ourselves driving through on our way to Halifax, and it was the most conveniently located and interesting restaurant we could find in the area. We parked on the street and wandered in. When we arrived, we were greeted heartily by the server, and seated by a window at the front. Other than us, there was only one other table occupied despite it being peak lunchtime and there being multiple cruise ships docked at the time in the harbor. We looked over the menu, which surprised us with its items, many of which are not even remotely close to Egyptian food, despite being named "Taste of Egypt." Regardless, we hoped for the best and flagged down the server to place our order. Hubby started with an Arabic coffee and ordered the tandoori kebab wrap, and I opted for the vegetarian plate with an extra side of the yogurt sauce and pita bread. Our food came out pretty fast, but a lot slower than I was expecting, given that we were the only other table occupied, and they had already been served their food. My dish was very standard, but nothing too exciting to report on any stand-out items. Hubby liked his wrap but did mention that his lentil soup which came with it was pretty bland and he didn't enjoy it. The biggest downside was trying to get the server in order for us to pay our bill and depart. He was very involved with the only other table, and it was extremely challenging to flag him down and get him to bring us our bill. It took us at least 20 minutes to finally succeed in this endeavor. Service was less than ideal, food was good but not great, ambiance was warm, and prices were decent for the quantity of food. There is ample street and lot parking, super clean bathrooms, and tons of tables inside for larger parties. Overall, I imagine this is a great place if you have a connection to the server and speak Arabic, but if not, it takes a substantial effort to engage and get out of here. read more

Service was excellent. We were greeted immediately by the owner who seemed genuinely pleased to see us she was so warm and welcoming, almost felt like we were at her house. She chatted with us during the meal and it was very pleasant. I ordered the Turkish coffee which was poured in a ceremonial way it was flavorful, hot sweet and strong. Paula explained the menu to us and described the different meals in great detail. We got a vegetarian sampler which was delicious, as mentioned in another review the falafel was denser than what I have had before but still good. we loved the way the rice was presented the Beef kofta was excellent. Excellent Moussaka. We finished off the meal chatting with the owner and eating the light and scrumptious baklava. read more

We've been going to this restaurant since we moved here, 4 years ago. The food is excellent. Very healthy selections of foods. The tastes of the various foods is exquisite. The service staff is alway top notch. They have put a lot of effort into the decor of the new restaurant at Eastpoint Way. We always order too much and leave with another lunch or dinner for the next day. Highly recommend this restaurant. read more

We were passing through New Brunswick on our way up to PEI on a regional holiday, so most spots were closed, but this was open, so we opted to get dinner here. It's in a pretty good location, close to the harbor and with a good number of parking spots in front. The restaurant has a nice feel to it, and it's quite clean. Our server was quite friendly and made some pretty good suggestions. It was nice to see that they clearly denote what items on the menu are gluten-free, and they even have gluten-free pita bread, which has been rare in my experience. Good portions, good food, friendly service. The choices don't necessarily all seem to resemble Middle Eastern food, but it tastes pretty good. read more

It's a good meat at a great price. It's run of the mill Mediterranean food. Other than no alcohol and some of the decor, I wasn't remind of Egyptian food when I got there. The wait was horrible. Didn't plan on staying at a restaurant for over 3 hours. We made a reservation, the lady had no idea where to sit us. Once seated it took 45 min for a server to ask us what we wanted to drink , then another 30 min to get a drink. Another 40 min got our order. Owner was going around apologizing for waiting, never came over to us!!! The entire night!! So after everyone in the place got their meals we still waited. The table next to us were seated after us, they got their food still we waited. They left and we still didn't get served. Finally got food. It was so bland no flavor. Not worth the wait , nor the $$ spent .. will never go back and I will be sure to let my friends know NOT to eat there. read more

In our visit to Saint John, I was looking for a sit in halal restaurant. This location came up, to our surprise the restaurant was great. Parking at night was free on the street, the decor of the restaurant was great... it gave us an Egyptian feel. The quality and quantity of the dishes were great. The meats were seasoned and cooked very well, the rice came is the shape of a pyramid (very cool). The have a lot of beautiful decoration pieces for sell. The staff was patient and friendly. For my Muslim folks - The restaurant serves halal food, the owner is a converted Muslim and opened this restaurant. read more

Tucked in a really nice shopping complex by the Costco. Plenty of parking. Inside we were greeted by the owner who was very nice and got seated. Plenty of seating inside but didn't see any outside seating. Our server came with menus and we got our order. They have an everyday lunch menu from 11 to 4. We ordered the following: Chicken shawarma plate, beef kofta plate, tandoori chicken plate and shish tawook plate. We also ordered 4 chais. The food was excellent. They came with rice or fries. Fries were crispy and rice was sweet. The shawarma was my personal favorite. It was cut and seasoned well. I also enjoyed the kofta and tandoori. All the kabobs were great in general but really enjoyed the shawarma the most. Our server made all the difference too. If you're in the area, highly recommend going here! read more

I'm a little confused why this place is called Taste of Egypt when they have butter chicken, pad Thai, samosas, Greek salad... maybe call it something else?? I went because I was looking for vegan food and of course vegetarian middle eastern food is accommodating..hummus, baba ganouj, falafels...I succeeded in finding vegan food, a vegan sampler platter. But the food alright... The hummus, grapevine leaves, tabouleh we're good but the falafel was just way too dense. The food here is good but not extraordinary. It was a bit quiet when we went and there was only one other table sitting. I personally love the decor of the restaurant and I think adds so much dimension into the culture. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly (albeit a little annoying) The Saganaki was OK and so was the key of life. The names for some of these dishes and drinks are really corny but regardless they're good portions. I like the presentation of the dishes especially how the chicken souvlaki had a rice pyramid. I had ordered the Kushari as it was something I never had heard of before and I'm glad I did. Although it's a bit odd, it was interesting to taste the food of a different culture. The Kushari was basically rice, elbow macaroni, and spaghetti, lentils, chickpeas, and fried onions mixed together in a tomato sauce. A bit too much onion for my taste but really filling and different. All in all, I would come back here if I'm ever around the area again. read more

Food was good and portion sizes were massive! I felt like my server tried to keep up selling me to order more, but there is only so much I could eat. When I asked for a takeout container since I needed to rush to the airport, I had to separately ask for fork and didn't get a bag. We were the only ones there for over an hour except someone that ordered take out which was probably the way to go in retrospect. We counted, 7 times in a row. Also counted the 27 lonely hookas sitting on the the side and then stopped counting ceiling tiles half way through.... There were also 6 moth balls in the urinals in the men's bathroom.... Smelled awful. I wanted to come back later with a urinal cake to try and help out. Stopped in with our family on a one-day visit through Saint John. We come from a large city and are used to restaurants that specialize in only one cuisine (and being wary of those that purport to do multiple cuisines). The food was very good across a surprisingly wide array of cuisines. The Mediterranean/Middle East hummus/tabouli/grape leaves were excellent. The Pad Thai was comparable to better Thai restaurants. The tandoori stir-fry (an unlikely dish) had a genuine tandoori kick to it, with nicely spiced cubes of tofu. And the fries were fresh cut and fried to a perfection reminiscent of an authentic English pub. To top it off, we have high gluten sensitivities in our family, and the menu is wonderfully gluten friendly. (Vegetarian friendly as well.) Lastly, the service was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. We highly recommend this spot. read more

I've eaten here twice while visiting Saint John in the last couple of weeks. I thought the vegetarian moussaka tajine and the baba ganouche were both excellent. For a beverage I had a lime and mint concoction which was delicious. The decor is gorgeous and the music was very nice, a sort of middle eastern pop. I'll definitely come back next time I'm in town. I will say, though, that the food was on the under salted side, so if you prefer your food more salty be sure to ask for a shaker right away. read more

Turkish coffee is very good yet be careful its not your traditional North American coffee. I was vacationing in St. John with my family last week and this restaurant was recommended to us for its vegan & vegetarian options. My daughter (vegan) and son (vegetarian) had the pad thai and falafel burger and really liked them. My wife had chicken kebobs (the restaurant offered to serve a tandoori kebob & a souvlaki kebob as she was undecided about which to get) and liked them and I had the Key of Life which was very good. Portions were generous for all of us. The food was well seasoned, perhaps even a bit on the lighter side. If you like stronger seasonings I'd suggest you mention it when ordering. We were all so pleased with our meals we ate there again the next night. My wife got shrimp kebobs and liked them a lot and I got the chicken souvlaki kebobs and really enjoyed them. My son and daughter got the falafel burgers and were very pleased. The potato wedges, pita bread, salad and hummus were all very good accompaniments to our various meals. I ordered their falafal burger for take-out because it seemed to be the only place in town to get a vegan burger! The place was empty when I went in and quite dim. The waitress was nice. I would get the burger again but it wasn't anything to rave about, unfortunately. It was nearly $20 for my burger and drink.
