Cuban Coffee House - Game of cards, a Cuban sandwich and damn fine coffee

But my idea of Cuba is bright and bold like their cars. The inside was dark and how I imagined a mess tent in Vietnam may have looked like. The head chef who incidentally made our coffee was dressed like an army sergeant. My husband and I ordered eggs benedict with home-made hollandaise sauce. On asking what could be included in our son's toasted sandwich, sergeant told me, 'it's on the board, love.' But the board gave us an array of ingredients but no prices. Hubby didn't like the attitude and wanted to leave straight away. I said we should stay. Our other son chose a pie of $6.50, which came with ... nothing, and was still hungry. This was actually fortunate because the eggs benedict was presented poorly to us. White split bun, some leaves of spinach and a slightly poached egg. The hollandaise sauce was squirted out of a plastic bottle leaving squiggly mustard coloured patterns on top. It reminded me of a hot dog. The bacon was blackened at one end and raw at the other. We both lost our appetite. We tasted a bit but the hollandaise sauce was too much and ruined anything tasty that may have been hiding underneath. The waitress apologised for our served meals saying it was her first attempt at making eggs benedict. We handed them over to our teenagers to eat. The coffee was fine and was served in medium sized handled cups. However, when the bill came to $69 we were informed the coffees had been large, not regular and unless we wanted to return the extra coffee we'd drunken we'd have to pay full price. We tried to explain that we didn't feel this was fair, and that the hollandaise sauce squiggles from a plastic squeegee bottle didn't lend itself to being homemade. It was then that sergeant told us to pay up and 'get the hell out of his cafe'.' He went on to tell us he was the head chef and if we didn't pay up he'd get us arrested for shoplifting. He wasn't joking. It wasn't a busy place with only two other people coming in for coffee. Our main gripe was food presentation and lack of respect given to customers who aren't happy about being charged for something they didn't order. This review is my own opinion and I expect people will have their own.

It was open at the time I was in the area and it did look inviting. I perused the menu and decided to give it a try. Walking in I saw the old-fashioned furnishings, metal chairs, display cases, wall shelves, big bar in the middle all in a long and narrow room. Yessss, this looks lie something out of the 50s and I like it. After a long hard look at the menu I opted for the Salami platter... Strangely enough there wasn't salami, but more like a smoked ham, prosciutto like meat. It tasted great, so what's in a name. Delicious heirloom tomatoes, capers, salami impersonator, cream cheese, capers, pickles and your choice of bread. I had chosen crumpets and regretted that . Not because they weren't delicious, because they were so yummy, but they were also so buttery that I couldn't get the cream cheese to stick and everything I tried to put on the crumpet just slid right off them. I got the bottomless cup of coffee and I must say, this is really good coffee and the refills kept coming also. I love the atmosphere in here and there are so many great choices on the menu. If I ever come back tot Auckland, I will definitely stop by this place again.

It's a popular place and they were crowded but we didn't have to wait for a table. There was plenty of food for each order. My wife had a street dog and fries and I had a Ruben. They were pretty decent. I wasn't as happy with the fries. They were like the bottom of a pile and mostly little pieces with very few full length slices. Prices were extremely reasonable. I would definitely eat there again.
