Walking through the door I have stepped back in time. An old style diner that's been around for ages. Quiet and just the right amount of AC during this heatwave. Had the breakfast special. Loved it. Cooked exactly as ordered. My server, Donna, represents the kind of server we love. Filling your coffee, which was very good, before you have to wave at her and wait for ages. Knowing to bring extra napkins at the start of the meal with being asked. Not to mention bringing enough extra napkins. It's the small things that are so important. Micro Review: Quick stop in Laurel and stumbled on the diner. Quaint and a local spot, but breakfast was spot on. Ordered the triple play - coffee was strong and great pick me up! Many years ago I was an extra in the tv show Homicide: Life on the Streets. We did a shoot once at the little motels down in this area of Laurel. The producers were going for that no-tell/hourly rate vibe. Anyway I put that out there to set the stage for your surroundings if you navigate to this spot from the more tony parts of town, or out of state. It's an area that has seen fresher paint, cleaner windows and better times. The food is regular, no frills, "home cooked". There is no stack of creme fraiche on your pancakes, or sprigs of green adorning the omelette. This morning the bacon was, as my wife described done as if put under a press and forgotten about. It was like bacon chips...quite tasty if not the texture I normally go for. The sausage patties had suffered the same fate. There were scrambled eggs (a little bland), and I had pancakes (a little grainy). I think maybe the cook had other things on his mind, or a bit hungover. I like that, I want a cook in a gritty little slightly run down place to be "complicated". No knock on Shirleys for example, (great place, can't wait to go since we are back in MD), but the country needs places like this too. If every restaurant is a spotless (and often soulless) corporate money generator, we all lose. I think you have to have some sweatpants "just okay" meals in order to appreciate those times you stood in line waiting to be seen at brunch in your Sunday best. Hubs grew up in this area, so while reminiscing, we decided to stop at Tastee Diner. So, this place is very dated, and I'm so cool with that. It's not the cleanest place and gives me a Waffle House vibe, but our server was lovely and made the experience fun. We sat at our table and looked at our menu, which consisted of traditional diner food. I got pancakes and eggs, and hubs got liver and onions, which were really good. The food was very yummy. I think we would return. This is an OLD diner. Everything about it is old and dark. Doesn't look like it's ever been updated. Is it a good breakfast, well... umm, sometimes it's good and other times, a miss - just like the store Tuesday Morning. Some days you'll find that you want to buy everything in the store and other times, you're just browsing, leaving empty handed. On this particular visit, a requested onions with my hashbrowns, were missing and instead of receiving scrambled eggs, they were over medium, fried country ham was chewy, cream chipped beef and toast was forgotten, but then when reminded to our waitress, arrived shortly after. Tastee Diner is a nice little diner I between the North and Southbound lanes of US-1 North of Laurel, MD. It has a nice atmosphere with many regular locals. I was greeted as soon as I entered,and served coffee shortly after sitting down (oh, BTW the coffee is delicious!). I tried the international omelet with fried potatoes, a short stack of pancakes (they have sugar-free syrup), iced tea, and a biscuit. I love a good greasy spoon! The eggs were done perfectly (over medium), bacon was crispy, and maybe the best biscuits I've had. My hubs got the corned beef hash- also done crispy on the griddle. We got a short stack of blueberry pancakes that had fresh blueberries and were light and delicious. We truly enjoyed our meal. And our server was on top of everything, but gave us our space- the perfect amount of service. It's a bit doughy around the ages like any old place that's been around but the food and people are amazing. For us it was a bit empty so parking and seating were not an issue. We were seated and served drink right away. A bit later the food came out. The burger my son had was sloppy and huge. It looked delicious and according to the boy it was amazing. In his words "yum". I had the BLT and I feel the same. The coffee is regular coffee but it tastes fine. Not too watery or overly strong. The ladies running the place remember your order rather than writing it down. And the get it correct! It definitely is the local "greasy spoon" where you see yourself sitting with friends and family catting with the rest of the locals that come in to eat. I want to come back and try their daily specials. It's not just a breakfast place. It's also a good lunch and dinner place. Finally to give you an example of how hometown it is - they remember your name and ask how things are in your life. And they love to work there. This was a cute little dinner we found late one night before I drove through the night. I got a coffee and a piece of bread pudding with vanilla ice cream. The waitress was nice, she was attentive and our food came out quickly. Coffee was coffee, it was satisfying, however I wish she didn't wait for me to ask for more coffee. The bread pudding was good but the ice cream was too soft. We were are to stay there and enjoy our timr, which was much appreciated. I would come back for a late night meal again. read more

In March, it will be a year since we have been going to this diner. And by that I mean, practically EVERY week since then. We've tried their sandwiches, breakfast platters (the BEST) and even been there late enough to consider our meal 'dinner'. As I said in my previous review, it's nothing fancy. But it's good eats. This was a great little diner in laurel. I judged a book by its cover the first time but I returned and took a stab at this awesome little place. I'm from New Jersey the place where there are multiple diners in every town so when I can find a decent place to eat I'm game. I ordered the western omelette without ham and I substituted the ham for turkey sausage which only cost me an extra fifty cent. The food came out extremely fast and it was pretty good. It tasted more homemade than restaurant made. They have these flaky homemade biscuits that are delicious. I will definitely be back. Lesson learned don't judge a book by its cover it may not look like much but it's cheers on the inside. I have to say that I didn't actually eat here, it was so filthy I had to leave and not get food. Situated in a strip filled with struggling businesses in a very blue collar part of Maryland, essentially an industrial area, this is a cute restaurant. But it was so dirty I couldn't handle it. Even before we entered there was a guy bringing trash out. This wasn't just restaurant trash, it was clothes and belongings as though a homeless person had somehow set up residence inside. After watching this guy make numerous trips, we approached the diner. There's plenty of parking btw. A folded, old looking hand drawn sign outside read "griddle cook wanted". My hesitation increased. We entered and there was a guy talking on a phone, water all over the floor, and everyone appeared to be confused by our presence. It also appeared that at least half the place was closed. It was strange. A waitress ushered is toward a table past some really rough couple who were all over each other in a booth. It creeped me out so much I just left. They could have been a loving couple who just didn't care about how they looked, or it could have been something else, I don't know or care. I just couldn't tolerate anymore nastiness from this restaurant. I had my kids with me and whatever they were up to just seemed inappropriate. 2, almost 3 AM, late flight and starving, so I drive through town and hoping something is open that is not Denny's. Hiding in a parking lot was a lone neon light that said OPEN. I drove over to it, skeptical that is was an accident, and there was an old guy standing in the window staring at me. Might as well go in, might be awesome, might get killed. I'm hungry. The place is empty, just the cook and the waiter. I get an iced tea and order a deluxe burger, and I have to say it was one of the best that I'd ever had. Fried onion, pickles on the side, lettuce, tomato, just as I asked for. Listening to the old guy tell me that he had been a part-time server there for the last forty years or so was fun to listen too, I don't talk to people very much when I travel so it was good to listen. One of the two people working, this was super late at night, made a pot of coffee for my order and it was watery and made for a terrible black coffee. This was my go to spot for late night diner food, decent greasy Waffle House type fare. There was always the obnoxious drunk group in there, but nothing too bad. The staff you had a couple friendly people, but you had a few people who seemed like they didn't want to be there. My last time there, a while back, I def had a server that did not want to be there. To start of off I was in the restroom and someone starts banging in the door. I'm just washing my hands so 20 sec in there max. I walked out and not the next guy in line but the one behind him who was banging on the door starts cussing me out, but ends up using the women's room (your typical roid head, DC club, drunk - that guy). At our table his group starts talking to the server loud so we could hear. "Chino"/"Ching-Chong" that type stuff with a few kung-fu moves and everyone laughing. The server comes over "what do you want?". Should have left but we ordered. Chicken fingers were fine, but 2 burgers were raw and froze in the inside. Notified or server about it - "you said you wanted it medium rare". They recooked one (didn't think you could put a half eaten burger back on a grill) and replaced the other one. Somehow charged us for 4. Now we complain to the manager. The manager accuses us for trying to steal food and rally's the rest of the employees to start yelling at us. A lot of "you people" and "we don't do that in America" were hurled along with other insults. Two quiet Chinese-American guys and a nerdy Indian-American guy who were all born in the US. It was like walking into the home locker room with an away jersey on -everyone wants to kick your ass. We arrived just after 9:00am, the nicest lady greeted us, took us right to a table and brought us fresh, hot coffee. Funky, vintage type place; lots of character. When I think diner, I envision a place like this. Good menu choices including blue plate specials everyday. Now HERE is a championship Sh!thole. It was late, and we were from out of town. Miles between our starting point and our hotels. The guide books warn that a wrong turn can put you in a dangerous neighborhood in Baltimore, but our GPS had set us off in search of an Applebees. Out of the corner of my eye, I spied the Tastee. It was so unilluminated, I would have missed it. I told my pals "I think we found our Dinner" A real-deal, old skool "Diner". Dark of atmosphere, local denizens sitting in various parts, unaware of anything going on around them. The hygiene seems dodgy, and the staff was, well, exactly what Central Casting would have sent this place if it was a Hollywood set. I knew that this place was going to be great. And it was. Pal #1 had breakfast-Corned Beef Hash and Poached Eggiwegs, Pal #2 had some kind of Chicken Sandwich. I had a Double Burger and Onion rings. Everything was home-made and very very good. The waiter/cook/majordomo suggested Pie for dessert, and Pie it was with Coffee. Good Pie, Good Coffee. The Bill was breathtakingly frugal-even better. You've seen places like this on TV and in Films. Usually nothing good happens in and around these night-time beacons, and I can't even imagine what this place might be like during the day. It's made for the night-and late night at that. We don't have places exactly like this in Chicago-we have Greek Coffee Shops, which are Sui Generis for the Windy City. The East Coast has Railroad-Car Diners. This was a beaut!! And oh yeah-they had old skool Juke Box controls at each booth...And you can order Booze from the adjacent Bar. Cheers! read more

It was quick (food was on the table in abt 7 min) and below average (never found out our server's name. She wasn't rude, just not friendly. She was attentive but not a nag. Slim, older blonde with plenty of makeup.) The older brunette that sat us barely did that, she really directed us where to go and came back with menus. She never greeted us. She also took our payment and never said "thank you", "come again", or "have a nice day". She was a bit too aloof for her job choice. She was the rudest to us, but I saw her talking to others in a more friendly way. We were greeted by a younger, slightly heavier blonde who was the only one that smiled. She said "hello" and "goodbye". Prices: low, 2 adult meals, 1 kid's meal, and 3 drinks for $22.53 Portions: decent and filling Taste: good. I had eggs over medium (perfectly done) with turkey sausage (a good kick). My wife said her pancakes (short stack) were "tasty and filling, but heavy" and my son loves anytime he's allowed to get chocolate chip pancakes so he was pleased. My decaf coffee wasn't good. This place is fine. It's a legitimate diner. In other words, it's what you'd expect from a real diner. It has a long counter, chrome, booths, and the typical grub. The place was not spotless, but it wasn't dirty, either. I had blueberry pancakes, hash browns, and coffee (just under $9 pre-tip). The pancakes and coffee were OK. The potatoes, like most places, were not as well-done as I'd like. A lady in the booth next to me actually sent hers back to have them cooked more. I'll probably be back at some point. Ok. The worst breakfast I ever had. If a place can't cook breakfast, I can't imagine what the rest of the food tastes like. Eggs cold, scrapple overcooked, awful taste! Coffee no good. I would of said something but not when you've had the most unfriendliest server I've had in a long time, along with the cashier, they truly acted like they didn't want to be there or I was a bother to them when I came in. I was kind and friendly, but that obviously didn't change their bad attitudes. I am trying to support local business, but I guess they could of cared less! Called before coming twice and got no answer, finally arrive and the employees are sitting around playing games, there is literally not one customer in sight, sooooo why couldn't you answer the phone?!?
