The reason for my review however is to compliment the crew that was working today (03/21/2021). There was a gentleman ahead of me who clearly was a first-time customer. First-time customer: "Can my sub be toasted?" Employee: "We only have cold subs with the exception of the meatball or sausage subs and we don't toast any subs." First-time customer: "Do you have olives?" Employee: Very light-heartedly said "We don't get that fancy." The employee working the slicer insured that this customer's order was correct through-out the process: the sub selections, the toppings, etc. all while continuing to complete the call-in orders and the other customer(s) in line. I'm from North Jersey so I know a good sub when I eat one and Tastee certainly makes a good sub, but its nothing more then a blimpie sandwich with more meat. The menu is very classic and straightforward. I tried the tuna sub and I really enjoyed it. The sandwich is simple and has the right proportions of bread/meat/veggies. There is usually a long line out the door during lunch rush, but the staff is very efficient, the line moves pretty quickly and is definitely worth the wait. As everyone else mentioned, the bread is soft; it's not the crusty and chewy kind you find elsewhere. With regards to the size of the whole sandwich, the length is pretty much on par with other sub shops I've been to. While the sandwiches aren't exactly "stacked" or packed with plenty of meat, the ratio of vegetables to cold cuts is on point. While I haven't had the chance to compare Tastee to other sub shops in the area yet, sandwiches here are done right and done well. I opted for provolone cheese along with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mayonnaise, hot peppers, and oil and vinegar. Like usual, the sub was tremendous. I have been going to Tastee subs for 60 years, they have gone down so bad I do not want it for free. A roast beef Whole sub on 7/9/23. DRIED out meat, DEAD, 3 slices of tomato sooo thin you could see through them, 4 strands of onion, 2 table spoons of lettuce, they forgot the oregeno and pepper. Within 2 hours bad stomachache, many trips to the bathroom. I put off calling till Wed. My wife said I should inform them. I did, and they are not going to do anything about it. Been a frequent visitor for a long time, about once or twice a month and sometimes 2 or 3 times a week. Havent been able to visit the past year but i can say that the staff seem... lifeless and stale like the past 2 subs i got in past 2 weeks. I went in a downtime too, they were working but it didnt give off the same vibe and energy i used to see and sense. The roastbeef have gotten dry, the lettuce used to glisten but now its feels and tastes like vinyl. Before even without the "extra meat" it was huge. At least the bread is good still but even that seems smaller or am i trippin. Perhaps they are burnt out from corona (essential worker) or internal strife within the establishment. Wow A. This is the best sandwich shop I have ever been to. When I was enrolled in Rutgers I would go to Tastees every month. Their portions are very generous so you can have 2-3 servings if you get a whole. Poor student budgeting trick :) The bread was soft and fresh and the meats were very delicious. You get to see the meat cut and sandwich being prepared right in front of you. When I go, there is always a line so you know this place is legit and is known by the locals. I could have settled for the half size. Since this was my first time here I went off their recommendation and got the #5, which is a combo of their 1-3 sandwiches. And it's simple. Nothing fancy to it. Meat was sliced fresh. Roll was fresh. As many have reported it is a little messy. So make sure you are not eating it while driving, or without napkins. The quality is still there. The bread is great and the ingredients are all good but the pricing has gone up quite a bit. Decent size seating area. They run a tight shit like a factory line. With any Sub you need two main things. Good bread and fresh meat. Anything else in between is all you.
