    Eggplant with Garlic Sauce
    Kevin S.

Came here recently for a late lunch while I was in the area. Wanted to try a new place and was craving Chinese food so came here after finding it on Yelp. It was not too busy when we came and were seated immediately. The menu had a good selection but we decided on 3 items: the braised beef noodle soup, Dan Dan noodles and eggplant with garlic sauce. The standout was the eggplant with garlic sauce. It came out in a hot bowl and was cut thinner than usual, which I enjoyed as each piece had more of the sauce on it. The sauce was also super flavorful. The Dan Dan noodles came out and were soupier than expected. I am used to the drier sauces with more of a mala flavor but the Dan Dan noodles were not that spicy, which made it taste more like a noodle soup than a dan dan noodle. The braised beef noodle soup I was really looking forward to as there were alot of good reviews. However, the beef broth was rather sweet and the beef wasn't as tender as the usual beef noodle soup at my go to places. It was sadly our least favorite of the 3 items.

This spot is a great find. Decent prices with many tasty chinese dish options. The eggplant was so good and very flavorful. The dumplings were very juicy. The food came out pretty quickly and the lady that helped us was very kind. Great spot!

Yeah this place is a must-go. My partner and I visited Shanghai & Chongqing recently and this blows everything we had out the water. - the fish is so fresh you could taste it - the portions are generous - the seasoning is perfect. You can drink the soup without feeling overwhelmed - the spicy mala numbing flavor is exactly what you'd get in China This restaurant is a gem.

[Ambiance] - When I step into the resturant. My first impression was a family type style resturant. Many chinese decoration and quite roomy. 4/5 [Service] - Great Service. My food came at a reasonable time. While I ordered some soup the waitress asked if I need some bowls with that. Very Polite and welcoming 4/5 [Food] - 4/5 House Special Beef Noodle Soup 4/5 "TASTE" - Rich Broth w chill oil, Thick Noodles (Udon-like) soaked in a lot of broth had a nice bouncy texture and very flavorful. (I dont recommend this noodle for the Zha Jiang Mian however) Strong flavors and Seasoned well. "SMELL" - Spicy meaty broth aroma "PRESENTATION" - Looked appetizing. The soup had this this spicy red color to it. I'm glad I ordered mild spice. I was still able to taste after eating it. The dish is topped w fusion peanuts and minced meat House Dumplings w Fish and Celery (Steamed) 4/5 "TASTE" - Delicious. Simple but yet tasty. Came out nice and hot. Seasoned quite well. Its just melts in your mouth with each dumpling. Everything from the dough to the fish and celery fused very well together. "SMELL" - Nothing Particular "PRESENTATION" Dumpling looked nice a plumpy. Served with a chilli oil sauce on the side. Aside from that nothing special Lamb Soup with intestines (Seasonal Menu on the wall) 4/5 "TASTE" - Delicous rich broth. Taste like the broth has been boiled down for many hours. Seasoned well. There was assortment of intestines. "SMELL" - Nothing Particular "PRESENTATION" - Nice milky broth topped with some scallion. Additional comments - It was a cold day out. The Lamb soup was probably one of the better lamb soup I have tasted. Very nice on a cold day to warm up your body. Same for the Beef Noodle soup as well.

Friendly staff. Food was delicious and came out quickly. Nicky decorated, intimate place. Large menu with so many options. Tried wonton soup, potstickers and sweet and sour chicken. Large portions to share. Would go back to try more!

Still a positive experience, but my bar is where the dumplings in china are at. Also, they gave us the wrong dumpling but offered to replace

My friends like to get dumplings for takeout from this place so I decided to try Tasty Place for the first time. Jean who answered the phone was nice and took my order over the phone. She recommended their house dumpling (fish and chive) that she said got them in the Michelin guide so I ordered that along with many items marked as popular on their website. I liked their various dumplings, Old Beijing Zha Jiang Mian. hot and sour soup, mapo tofu (it's spicy), eggplant garlic sauce, and fish with flaming chili oil. Kung pao chicken and broccoli beef were decent too. The lao ma won ton comes in a numbing spicy sauce and was good, but it needs to be eaten right away because the won ton wrappers break when they're in the sauce for too long. I saw they had two websites and she said spicyhome520.com is their current website which takes online orders. The older website had an offer for free wang lao ji herbal tea if you spend over a certain amount which she honored. She gave us 4 cans of herbal tea for free, free eggrolls, and increased the portion of the hot and sour soup for us which normally feeds 2. I requested dishes to be less spicy, and they were for the most part except the braised seabass and tofu was salty.

"I rarely write reviews, but this experience was too frustrating to ignore. My friend was set to start working at this restaurant on Friday at 5:00pm, as agreed on Tuesday. Then, out of nowhere, she gets a message on Thursday afternoon saying they didn't need her anymore. I mean, really? If you're running a business, basic professionalism and respect for people's time should be a given. My friend had already organized her entire week, working two jobs, only to be ghosted last minute. Beware of places like this--it's just plain inconsiderate and unprofessional."

One of my favorite places to get dumplings is at Tasty Place. The restaurant is small but cozy. Workers are very friendly with great services. My husband and I used to come here often when we lived in Millbrae. Our favorite is their house salad and the fish dumplings. They used to give free shredded potato on the side, which brought my husband back to his childhood when his grandma used to make it. Fast forward a few years into the pandemic, we decided to order Tasty Place for takeout on Chinese New Year since my husband grew up eating dumplings on CNY. Of course, we ordered the same items: house salad (spicy one this time), fish dumplings, pork and cabbage dumplings, the shredded potato, and the potstickers. Everything is as good as we remembered. The host/server is extremely polite. The restaurant is packed even though at that time, it should have been closed for the worker's break time. The lady ended up giving me a promotional card (stamp card) so we can get a free bag of frozen dumplings after we order the required amount of dumplings. So nice! In terms of food, everything is spot on. Definitely try the non-spicy house salad for a better flavor and the fish dumplings: very juicy, even juicier and sweeter than the pork and cabbage one. Overall, Tasty Place is delicious and worth coming here!

Found the best Chongqing Wanzhou grilled fish in the Bay Area at Millbrae! After work, I wanted to find a Sichuan restaurant to hang out with friends. I hadn't had grilled fish in a while, so we decided to try Tasty Place in Millbrae. Even on a Monday night, the place was packed. The food was absolutely amazing and authentic! I heard the owner used to be a Sichuan chef in China, and the prices are very reasonable, perfect for a small gathering with friends. Highly Recommend: Chongqing Wanzhou Grilled Fish: A whole fish enough for four people. It's fresh, fried, and then boiled, with a perfect blend of spicy and numbing flavors. The seasoning enhances the fish's natural taste, and the veggies that come with it are delicious too. You'll definitely need a lot of rice with this dish! Spicy Pork Kidney: Tender and tasty with a sweet and spicy flavor, served sizzling hot. Highly recommended! Dry Pot Cabbage: Simple appearance but surprisingly delicious. The cabbage is sweet and the basic seasoning is incredible. You'll want more after the first bite! Parking can be a bit tricky, but if you turn right at the next intersection, there are more spots available. The owner and staff are very friendly, and there are lots of non-Chinese customers too. Can't wait to come back for their dan dan noodles and spicy blood curd!

Wow the food is great. Such a surprise find. This restaurant is very close to another Sichuan restaurant and it's right next to a bbq restaurant so make sure you are going to the correct entrance. I recall coming to this place when I meant to go to the Sichuan restaurant so I left last time and I think it was a mistake to try this restaurant only after so many years. This restaurant is amazing. I don't know whether this changed owners but wow the food tastes so good. It's probably my favorite Chinese spicy food restaurant in the Peninsula now. The food portions are small but the prices reflect that and it's nice to see prices didn't go crazy for once. Even the way the ingredients are chopped can tell that the ones in the kitchen paid attention because the pieces are cut properly as opposed to other Chinese restaurants such as Wonderful (they should train the kitchen helper who to chop stuff there). Everything we ordered tastes great. I liked the frog dry pot. I also liked the spicy fish. The pork liver also is tender and flavorful. I really can't find any fault in terms of food here other than maybe presentation but who cares when they taste good. Even white rice tastes good and goes well with spicy food. The service is good and quick. The place is small but has decent number of tables. I don't recommend huge parties due to the space but I highly recommend this restaurant.

We enjoyed our meal here. We ordered a few rice plates and they all were very well flavored. We got the black bean fish filled, garlic eggplant (with chicken it's $3 more), scrambled egg and combination chow mein. The sauces were so good and so flavorful. We enjoyed the freshness of the veggies and the taste of the meats. The scrambled egg and shrimp was good but could probably have a bit more egg. Nonetheless, we loved the food here!

I got the potato salad and the zhajiangmian, and my boyfriend got the Lanzhou beef noodles and pork burger. I just picked through all of them and ate the remaining dish afterwards- the potato salad was yummy and the zhajiangmian was savory and came with lots of minced pork! My boyfriend enjoyed his Lanzhou beef noodles a lot, the beef was tender and the broth was incredibly flavorful and delicious. He liked the pork burger a lot as well, they did not skimp on the meat and the bun was fluffy! I would highly recommend this dish to anyone, it's a classic that is done well! This is a great addition to the downtown Millbrae array of authentic Chinese restaurants, I will be coming back!

They do have outdoor seating, not that it would help much when the lunch crowd is huge. Since the store name emphasizes on Hainan chicken, i havent quite explored their other menu items. First time I had the Hainan chicken rice plate, another time I had the noodle version. Funnily I find their rice plate version smaller portioned than the noodle soup, however it's not a true Hainan chicken experience without having oil rice. Both dishes serve Hainan chicken with scallion oil marinade and roasted peanuts. While noodles have oyster mushroom and spinach, rice plate has pickled veggies. Overall it gets the craving settled, its not the greatest though. The noodle soup was an interesting option. It feels a bit like when youre making noodle soup at home and just tossed in random toppings. I had corn, spinach, oyster mushroom. Definitely not a combo I see commonly. The soup was not bad, its drinkable, not salt at all. However its a bit odd to pair it with Hainan chicken, perhaps better with fishcake or meat balls, I did see a meatballs version. They do have other noodle style and broths to choose from, such as hot and sour, laksa. They do offer fish paste noodle if you want a teeny tiny bit more protein. Overall food is okay. It's nothing to rave about, even though I love Hainan chicken.

I have been to Kajiken twice now, and it has been absolutely delicious each time. It is located in downtown San Mateo, so it does not have its own dedicated parking lot. The servers typically come out to the folks closest to the front of the line and hand them menus so they can decide what they want before being seated. When it is not as busy, you can walk in directly and request a table. The shop itself actually has a lot of seating, but there is always an influx of people, so it fills up quickly. The interior gives off a nice modern Japanese chic vibe. :) They also offer outdoor patio seating, which is great if you are trying to enjoy a nice day outside. Dining area is typical of modern ramen places. Overall, a nice quick meal. Maybe closer to a 3.5 or 3.75 as it was good, but I was also very hungry. I would consider returning.

I had a pretty awesome experience here at Pho de Nguyen. The service was great. A very friendly…read morestaff who steadily checked in on me if I was ok or needed anything. Customary at most Vietnamese restaurants, you get your food with minimal check ins and not even a plate clearing until the bill comes. This was NOT the case here. There service was definitely in the A/A+ range! I ordered on my phone via QR code, but there was an option to order in person from a server. I ordered many items to try out. I ordered spring rolls, crispy salt and pepper wings, grilled pork banh mi, beef dac beit pho, and a Thai iced tea. Thai Iced Tea was pretty good. Grade: A I thought the Spring Rolls were decent, but what made them even better was the peanut sauce! I always hate when the peanut sauce is watery and this was far from that! An excellent gooey peanut sauce and maybe one of the best I've had fpr consistency. Grade: A- Crispy salt and pepper wings definitely had an incredible crunch. They were up there in crunchiness. The drumettes were meaty which I appreciated. They were well seasoned also. I think I need to try their other wings before crowning these, but some of the cruncheist wings I've had for sure. Grade: A- Beef Dac Biet Pho had some real high quality meat in it. I had options in noodle and my go-to for any pho spot is the egg noodles. I wish it had more bo vien in it, but I appreciated the combo of meats. The broth seemed authentic, but I wanted a tad more flavor out of it without adding sauces. Overall, the pho grade was a B+ bordering an A-. The star of the show was the grilled pork banh mi. The meat was tender and saucy. In fairness I asked for extra pickles and mayo, but I was very impressed. The bread had the crispy crunch we all look for but minus the stale bread. The breads soft yet crispness made it seem as if it just came out of the oven! I'm going to dub this as the best I've had in the Bay Area! There I said it! Grade: A+ Everyone who ordered the sampler seemed very pleased at other tables, I would definitely try that. Also, want to try the other banh mis and noodle options for the pho. There was a nice vibe at this place. I didn't feel rushed although they do close fairly early at 8pm. The server's mom is the one cooking in the kitchen and I appreciated the family feeling at this place. They do have a newer location in San Francisco that has a DJ Friday nights that I may check out. I believe the server said that they are open til 2am on most nights, but I may have misheard her. Feel free to Yelp that location. My only disappointment was that I really love papaya salad and it was not an option. I may make this my go-to spot from now on, but as a Yelper, we all know we will keep trying new places. This will be the one I continue to frequent. Well done Pho de Nguyen!

Never wanted to write a review so quickly after having the meal! Mainly because we got A+ service…read morefrom our server, who was absolutely sweet, accommodating, and great with kids. Upon getting seated, she asked if we wanted a plastic water cup, regular bowl, and plastic utensils for my toddler. I highly prefer being environmentally friendly, so I only opted for the reusable bowl. I truly appreciate her asking me before automatically bringing everything. I ordered the Pho Tai Gau (rare steak and brisket) with thin pho noodles, split bowl with extra noodles to share with my toddler. The meat is super thin and tender! Although we ordered "extra" noodles, it didn't feel like extra compared to a normal bowl, but my toddler wanted more soup than noodles so it worked out. We also got the imperial rolls appetizer. It was tasty but I felt like it was a bit overdone, because it hurt the roof of my mouth haha, but I do prefer it to be crispy than soggy so I'm not complaining! Just be aware :) Nowadays, my best eating out meals are those in which my toddler enjoyed and allowed her to be on her best behavior. Our server checked up on us multiple times (never had to flag her down) and took great care of us. My toddler even let her pick her up! So thank you for the great service!
