The Tate is an asset to the London skyline, a brilliant tourist attraction and a great place to mooch around for a deceptively educational day. I love to come here by myself and while away an afternoon, which more than occasionally turns into an evening. The Tate Modern is located along the South Bank, about a 20 minute walk from Waterloo station. It is easily accessable by bus or tube. There is even a boat service which runs from the Tate Britain, a short way up The Thames. However, the walk is a very enjoyable way of getting there. The Tate Modern is constantly busy. Don't let this put you off, because there is always a bit of The Tate which won't be crammed with people - you just have to search for it. The main turbine hall is where groups seem to congregate, and usually the vast space of the ex power station has been put to good use and houses some of the larger exhibitions. On the ground floor is a large gift shop which has a full range of art books, posters and childrens gifts. The other floors make up ongoing exhibitions which are free, with themes such as Material Gestures, Poetry and Drama, and Idea and Object. These exhibitions are interspersed with temporary exhibitions which you need to pay for to get in. A ticket for an exhibition is usually £10.00. Currently there is a very popular exhibition by Rothko. Other times in Tate Modern's history, exhibitions have been shown by Warhol and an amazingly in-depth and detailed look at Frida Kahlo. This is a great place to bring little ones. The Tate caters extensively for children. There are workshops, and interactive programmes for them, and whenever I have been, I have seem happy families with engrossed kids. My personal tip - become a member. I brought myself a years membership which was £54.00. I think that this has been fantastic value because it entitles you to free entrance to all the paid exhibitions, which means that if you see 5 exhibitions in 1 day you have made your money back. It also gives you access to The Tate Members Room on the 5th floor - a fully stocked cafe with comfy sofas and two outdoor spaces - one at the back of the building where you cannot hear any noise from the city below, and a panoramic front balcony with views stretching over the city of London. read more

I'm neither a museum buff nor a museum avoider but I when I do go I tend to visit history rather than modern art museums. On the day I visited the Tate Modern I was hosting some friends from out of town and they were interested in going so I happily went along. There was no entrance fee when I went unless you wanted to see the special exhibit that was going on so that part I liked... until I entered and found a mix of questionable 'art' that included a line of motionless women, standing still while facing a wall (how long they had been there already I have no idea), a dude staring blankly into a videocam while sitting at a makeshift desk in the middle of a walkway, and a quintet of scantily clad 'artists', also motionless save for the slow-speed rotations that happened periodically before resuming the art of standing/sitting/kneeling/hanging while letting their drool spill onto one of their counterparts... To my untrained eye the latter was more laughable than artistic so I was relieved when we visited the upper floors and saw much more 'conservative' modern art on display. read more

I can never decide whether I love or hate Tate Modern. Like anything else, the experience you have there will completely depend on what time you go. School holidays or weekends are my idea of hell on earth, but since it's open seven days a week and until ten most evenings, there's no using the noisy mobs as an excuse. For the most part, the paid exhibitions I've seen have been brilliant. Both the Louise Bourgeois and Gilbert & George retrospectives they've had here in the last couple of years were amazing: comprehensive and thoughtfully curated with enough background info to give all the context you could need. The free sections seem to vary a lot in terms of quality, but I have seen some cool stuff here, like when the Guerilla Girls had a small room with all their posters. And a visit to Tate Modern always seems to go down well with visitors from out of town, more so than Tate Britain. Just not in half-term. read more

I'm not a huge fan of modern art, but i actually really enjoyed going to the Tate Modern. The building is amazing and the turbine hall is particularly striking. Last time i was at the museum there was a huge 50ft spider sculpture in the hall. Spooky, weird but pretty amazing. The sceptic in me always tends to grumble about modern art. Is Jackson Pollock really that good!? "Oh crap, I just swallowed a bunch of paint and then sneezed onto my brand new canvas"....."Here Mr. Pollock. Have $1million". Warhol is pretentious, Chagall was tosser and Dali was so hopped up on drugs he spent the last year of his life living in a tower thinking he was Jesus. OK, rant over. The tate modern is a really nice place. Particularly on a Sunday afternoon. The staff are nice, the exhibitions are extremely well presented and your always bound to find something new, exciting and interesting. Highly recommended. read more

Not normally my sorta thing, but I I had a really good time. Didn't realise how much you can enojy art museum, but I think there were some nice pieces in there and i pparticularly enjoyed the big box that used some special meaterial which meant you couldnt see anyting inside it. Had alot of fun playing about in that! I would recommend this place to anyone, even if youre not a big art lover. I think because the art is modern, it makes it a lot more easier for people who dont really appreciate old fashioned art. read more

Great for young and old alike, this gallery has something for everyone and is a perfect way of getting interested in art. Whilst entry to the main exhibitions is free (visiting exhibitions charge for entry) there is a suggested box for donations on leaving the gallery and in my opinion it is well worth at least a small donation as the gallery has a great deal to offer and must cost a lot to keep running. An enjoyable day for all which really is worth visiting at least once if not many times more. read more

Reviewing the art here is pretty pointless since half of whats on offer makes no sense to me, and they tend to rotate exhibits on a really regular basis. But I can comment on the venue itself. Its an excellent space, with large open spaces, nooks and crannies to explore, and of course the main hall itself, which holds some of the most stunning exhibits of all. The Tate modern really provides a great day out for anyone visiting london or anyone who lives there. For a start, it is free to get in so it won't break the bank! The location is perfect as you can walk down the river bank, have a bite to eat and then stroll around the museum. Up until the exhibition at present I liked the Tate modern for its diversity, but to display living animals as art is not only unacceptable but irresponsible as it sends out the wrong message.
