They DO recommend sunscreen and even offer it for free on the ship because of the ozone layer you will get burnt. I hardly ever burn and tan easily and I was definitely red the next day! I recommend lining up early, there is limited seating towards the front of the boat and was a bit of a bum rush to get those seats. I also wouldn't sit at the absolute FRONT of the boat as we got seats to the side and the boat turns around often, so you'll get close to all the sights you need to see. ON THE BOAT: there are plenty of bathrooms and snacks/drinks to order. There are also several restaurants nearby the port to stop before the cruise starts One of the major disadvantages of our trip is that it was a WHOLE day tour and the cruise itself doesn't take that long. The way Great Sights structures it is that they pick up from Auckland and some people have an earlier tour, so we get to Paihia and had 2.5 hours to kill, which was fine, but we hadn't really planned for this. So, we stopped at a restaurant to eat, but you get there so early that they're not yet ready for serving lunch, so it was a small bit of a scrambling, as you don't want to go too far, as they start lining up for the cruise soon We both LOVED this tour and it was WORTH it, but to save on travel time, it would have been nicer to stay in Paihia. You have to be at the port for pickup from Auckland so early and it takes 2 hours to get to Paihia...so we had to leave our hotel before 7am for a tour that started at 1:15-1:30pm.

We were picked up at the condo, which was convenient, and were happy to see that we were the only four people on the tour this time - lucky! Our guide was knowledgeable and tailored the trip to our needs. He was just funny enough without being annoying (you know that can drive you NUTS). The van was clean, comfortable and safe, and we were driven to the places listed on the itinerary. We got a lot of history and info along the way and the guy answered lots of questions (even the weird and random ones), which was super cool. Lovely clean site!…read more Lovely clean site on top of the hill overlooking Russell with beautiful views to Paihia. Friendly accommodating staff. Nice spacious pitches, amenity blocks clean and nice. Short walk into the very pretty town and the ferry to Paihia. I would have given this site 5 except we paid for a site with a view and ended up with a very limited view! It wasn't helped by the way people parked their vans to maximise their views and made it difficult to fit in!

Unreal. Just freaking unreal. Gorgeous weather all the time, gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous, and perfect location to walk throughout Paihia and to the Treaty Grounds in Waitangi. It was spendy, but an experience we'll never forget. Completely gorgeous. Only 2 reasons I can't give this a fifth star, because everything else was dreamy: 1. Second worst bed I've ever had the misfortune to sleep on. The same thing is all over tripadvisor for this place, and they are not wrong. As cozy and restful as a tatami on a slab of hot concrete. For the love of all the world's bursitis, stop upgrading the towel heaters and GET PROPER MATTRESSES. 2. Front desk attendant was a bit lackadaisical with the instructions on getting into the underground parking. "Waving the fob in front of the white plate" is a touch vague. No white plate, and fob just laughed at us as I waved it frantically in front of everything on the wall. Panic set in as a handful of little zippy cars pulled in behind me on the downward slope. Into a locked grate. That wouldn't open. Few things I dislike more than inconveniencing strangers, and thankfully a staffer hopped out of his truck and punched a code into the tiny keypad, but not until I tried to back up a bit and scraped the fender of my tiny absolutely brand new rental against the barrier not 3" from the driver's door. Ugh. Other front desk attendant apologized later as the panel/fob things were not always working right, unlike the lady working when it happened, who offered a cheerful 'Sorry!' Thankfully the whole trip made up for that unfortunate first day scrape, and the view and calm of the place led us to wave off the fender after a few days. Kayaking around the islands, swimming and being lazy, sauntering into town, a terrific tex-Mexico cafe around done corner.... No trade off for the location of this place. Seriously, this was an incredible spot for a vacation and Paihia is completely gorgeous.

Pretty sure I have found heaven on earth!…read more Picturesque views, self contained 3 bedroom villas, an 18 hole golf course (not that I play, but waking up to rolling hills is niiice), an infinity pool and golf carts to get around - you'd be forgiven for thinking you were in Fiji! 'What does all this cost?' I hear you asking. Well, all things considered, it's not that expensive. Each villa sleeps 5, which makes it $100 per head, per night. Totally reasonable if you ask me. Especially if you take all your own food, which I highly recommend you do. They have bbq that you can hire and the kitchen's are pretty well-stocked. There is a winery restaurant up on the hill but the food isn't great and the service, abysmal. PRO TIP: If you have a car drive down to Rangiputa. It's only a 20min drive and the water is like the tropics - turquoise and so so clear.

We stayed at the anchorage motel three nights while we were in paihia. It has a nice view of the…read morewater and also has a pool. A big plus for us is it has a good air conditioner. We had a superior king and it had plenty of room with a large bathroom. The owner was very nice and we could walk to nearby restaurants. It was plenty close enough to walk to the the grocery store and shops in the center of town. We would stay here again if we come back to the region.
