I wanted to like this place so bad. My family took me here as special celebration of getting to see each other while I was visiting. The inside was pretty but it REEKED of used kitty litter the second we walked in. I have no idea why it smelled like that but that's what my entire family described it as and it got even stronger when you walked by the end of the bar. We ordered drinks and I did really like mine so that was a plus. We then ordered a couple appetizers as we had a fairly big party. The sourdough trio and the beef carpaccio were okay. We loved the scallop esquites though which were delicious. The bathroom was really weird, you go through a back door down a hallway and once you get to the all gender bathroom it's closed off by plywood doors for each individual stall which was really weird and felt cheap in a restaurant that looks nicer. Our waitress sucked (a middle aged blonde woman). She took forever to take our orders because she for some reason assumed we were just getting appetizers even though we never said that. When taking our orders my stepdad said "oh you're starting with me?" Just because I think he wasn't ready and in a rude tone she says "well you're sitting in seat number one so I'm just going by order". She was rarely at our table and spent more time talking with the bartender and who I assume are regulars who were sitting at the bar. When our food came out she said "you also ordered the teres major right?" While setting it in front of me before I said no. She then said "oh yeah, I knew that was wrong before I even said anything" and that she had put my order in wrong. She said she'd have the cooks put a rush on it but you can't really put a rush on a steak. She brought out the sides that go with my dish so I wouldn't be without food but the green beans were incredibly salty and the mashed potatoes were dry and almost cold. When my mom offered to let me have some of her steak for the time being the waitress butted in to say "she does have food coming". When my steak finally came out everyone else was already finished eating but she did bring it out with fresh sides and the mashed potatoes were much better! Granted the texture and appearance was so different from the first ones it really made me wonder just how old those first potatoes were which grossed me out a bit. My steak was delicious and I did get a side of chimichurri which was the best chimichurri I've had in a long time. My sister said the sauce for her seafood linguini was pretty bland but she otherwise enjoyed her dish. My mom also mentioned the teres major was really good. So there were some pluses but we all decided the negatives outweighed the positives. Would not recommend. read more

When you are served duck that's like a grey rubber band, soggy skin and over cooked. The sauce was poured over the duck to hide everything. Should have been sauce on the plate with the duck crispy skin side up. Makes me ask do they have a real chef in the kitchen or was his night off. We had an absolutely phenomenal dinner at Tavern on Main. If you go, the bone marrow and bacon-wrapped mushrooms are non-negotiable--they were truly out of this world and packed with flavor. For the main course, my husband had the beef tenderloin, which was prepared perfectly and quite literally melted in his mouth. The place is super cute, gives a fancy vibe with the gold utensils, fabric napkins and their table salt is coarse with a little spoon to add to your food. I never went without an ice tea refill, server was prompt and checked in with us enough. We ordered fairly quickly and food really didn't take too long. Now....the food looks much better than it tastes, sadly. Starters we got rolls with whipped butter, the butter definitely was not whipped Brussel sprouts, which had bacon fried on it, but none of the bacon fat, and the gastrique was so minimal, that the sprouts were super dry. Artichokes, they were ok just bland, and the romesco sauce was lacking flavor as well. My friend got the tuna melt, she said it was ok I got the smash burger and their special sauce added a flavor I did not like at all, otherwise the meat was good, crispy edges and bun was soft! read more

Came here three months ago and then this past week for a post graduation dinner. The front of house team was very accommodating, table for 8 went to 10 people, moved us inside and were very nice. Essentially 9 drinkers and 1 minor, ordered about 8 appetizers, oysters were my favorite, charbroiled oysters also tasty. Everybody loved their dinner, we had several lobster rolls, some steaks, I had a burger and we had some Caesar salads. Gratuity included bill was just over 700$, pretty fair price. If our waiter was around a couple more times we probably would have had some more drinks. read more

I travel to Eugene a lot and am always looking for new restaurants to try...and had heard about Tavern on Main in Springfield and thought I wound give it a try. The place is located in a very cool space in the downtown area...and the wife and I arrived without a reservation but were greeted promptly and seared at a nice table. We both ordered drinks and food...service was pleasant but slow...it appears they had just one (maybe two?) servers for the restaurant and it was quite busy for a Wednesday evening. The wife and I both ordered the bread as an appetizer-- and the steak frites as a main entree. Bread came very quick...and was good. It came with a tasty butter that was also good...but we were not given and napkins (or utensils) and because the server was so busy it was difficult getting her attention...as you can see from the photo I ended up using my shirt as a napkin. The steak took some time but came out at the correct temp (med-rate) and presented well. It was very tender and a good portion...but we both felt it lacked seasoning. It was fine but not special. Fries were fine as well. The entire meal with bread, drinks and tip was $100...these days that is very fair. Was out and about last Friday and since I've been here before I decided to stop for lunch. The interior is nice and booths are comfortable. My server was prompt and attentive, and appeared to be the only server on duty. I ordered Ms. Bond's Vesper shot- Aviation gin, vodka, Cocchi Rosa, Dolin Blanc, grapefruit twist, served with a bump of caviar on a golden spoon. The drink was surprisingly spicy, and the tiny bit of caviar served on a golden spoon was delicious. I was in the mood for a tuna melt so I ordered it from their lunch menu. Boy was I disappointed. The bread looked like two pieces of Texas toast with about 2 tablespoons of extremely mushed up tuna salad that was not spread out to the edges of the sandwich. I did like the spicy bit of red pepper that was in the sandwich. there was a very small piece of very thin American cheese that was not even melted. I normally love tuna melts, but not this one. The pomme frites were good. The next time I'm in Springfield for lunch, I will try a different restaurant. read more

Decided to come here for dinner, first time with friends. Glad we had reservations as when we got here, it was super busy! Enjoyed the interior and art deco theme. Fun place for downtown Springfield. I enjoyed my Steak Frites. Everyone else had a Smash burger which they enjoyed. We also enjoyed the charcuterie, very tasty. The drink menu is a lot of fun, with some great options. I enjoyed trying their cocktails and the cute glasses they served them in. They did have a dessert menu but since we were all full, we opted out. Will go back for sure! We have heard many good things about this place but sure were disappointed in the food at lunch. The place is clean inside and service was fine; only a couple tables were occupied at a Friday lunch. The bratwurst definitely smelled and tasted funky. Not a lot of flavor and an uninspired bun. Fries were average. Not clear why this is on the mean, tbh. The fish and chips was truly horrible - it stunk of fish (not fresh), and was 80% batter over 20% fish. The batter was heavy and bready. Some the worst we have had. Same fries. Maybe they have a better kitchen staff and menu at dinner but can't say we would rush back based on the lunch mess. We are glad so many locals love the Tavern and enjoy the food. read more

You know how it is usually the pretzel or the cheese....but never both....well we got the holy grail of pretzels and beer cheese at the Tavern on Main in Springfield....rumor is they are removing it...so run over there now! Weird experience here, very slow night. Had 2 servers I think. One was a guy, really unfriendly. The girl, who may have been the busser was sweet. I went here twice a month for a couple years. I loved everything about this restaurant . It reminded me of a great little bistro in Boston. The last time I was there my Smashburger fell apart in my hands because of the soggy buns. When I pointed it out to the server she asked, Yeah but was the favor good? then walked away leaving me the check. I paid the bill but when I got home I called asking to talk to the manager. The employee on the phone asked me to tell them why. I gave a short explanation of the situation. I received an equivalent of, "Sorry to hear that." The manager never reached out. We went here for our anniversary because it's where our first date was. We put a note that we wanted the tomahawk on our reservation, that we made weeks ago. We were told when we got there that they no longer serve them even though it's still on the menu and we noted it in our reservation. That was a bummer. They did greet us with a glass of champagne. Which was very nice! The food. It's just ok. The beet dip wasn't too exciting in flavor. The harissa was very mild. And, we had a ton of dip left after we were out of flatbread. The salad with burrata was very disjointed. There was way too many greens, and the burrata really didn't make sense on this dish. It was screaming blue cheese, or shaved pecorino. I was expecting a plate of beets with a whole ball of decadent burrata (not half, sort of dry cheese...which is what we got) the steak was cooked well. This was the only way I could get a steak, which we had come for, by adding to one of their salads. They do have streak Frites. I was just really not interested in fries. All in all, I think this restaurant is just ok. I really do enjoy the atmosphere. I think I have just concluded that this place is probably awesome to someone not so food savvy. If you are a foodie, this really isn't going to hit all of the buttons. read more

The drinks were good, the crab corndogs were good (reminded us more of hush puppies), but our actual meals weren't very good :/ I am so sad that we didn't like or love our meals here. The atmosphere of the restaurant was great but the seabass dish might be the blandest dish I've ever had at a restaurant. It was beautifully presented but even the sauce didn't have flavor to it. We've been wanting to try Tavern on Main for some time, and finally scheduled a date with friends of ours to check it out. Felt like dressing up a bit and this seems like a good place to do it. First off, the ambience is a fun 20s "Great Gatsby" bar, with gold leaf pinstriping, black and white accents, etc. I loved it! We made a reservation which was recommended but honestly, not really needed for a Thursday night before Labor Day weekend. We started with drinks: a beer, a rum & coke, Soursop Drop, and Tavern Lemonade (someone had to drive). I think the first two were rated as standard fare, but the Soursop Drop was given two thumbs up and the Lemonade was good but not great. I couldn't decide if it was the bitter or the coconut that made it less appealing. For starter, we ordered a half size of the oysters on the half shell. The plate was large, could have accomodated more oysters of that size for sure. Was nice they served it on ice, and the sauce was a malt vinegar with diced onion. I would have liked an additional sauce option but also, I can't really speak to this app too much, I am not a huge oyster fan (its a texture thing). In comparison to oysters I have had else where (New Orleans) these were quite small and I only tried one. For entrees, around the table we ordered the Tavern Smash Burger, Fried Chicken Sandwich x2, and the Steak Frites. The burger looked good but I don't recall any comments about it. The steak frites were rated as "just ok" and somewhat disappointing. The dish looked good, was cooked to order but just didn't have the flavor. The Fried Chicken is what I had and while it looked amazing, again, the flavor just wasn't there. And I am fairly certain my chicken fry was overdone, it tasted and looked a bit burnt. In addition, it was definitely not Nashville hot. Note that I requested no blue cheese (not to my liking). What saved this was that the fries are very good! We also ordered desserts, a scoop of vanilla ice cream with blueberry compote and honey comb (yes, actual honey comb) and the bread pudding. Hard to go wrong with desserts, so not much to report here though it was odd, the ice cream had salt on it, which at first wasn't that bad but then it was like there was a LOT of salt on the bottom... not good. Overall this experience was nice, but not outstanding. I am giving the Tavern 4 stars instead of three because the ambience was very cool and the wait staff was quite nice (please know that this is not FAST FOOD). The food was fine but not amazing. Will certainly return but try different dishes. Plus it is always nice to have a place worth dressing up for. read more

We picked up dinner tonight. Very friendly service and our order was ready on time. We had the salmon entree and the green salad with salmon. Both were delicious. The salmon was some of the best ever! Perfectly prepared--grilled, moist, fresh, tender, super flavorful. The entree was on a base of cucumbers with a yogurt sauce that was so delicious! My husband isn't a yogurt sauce fan but he devoured it. The green salad was just mixed greens with a very generous salmon filet. I asked for the dressing on the side and they omitted dressing altogether. The outside seating was bustling. Inside was nicely decorated and inviting. I'd go back next time I'm in town. read more

Okay, so my wife and I have gone to the Tavern a few times in the past couple of years. They normally ALWAYS come through with the flavors. Oysters were spot on. The smash burger was hu-maze-ing! If you order steak, just try to REALLY emphasize to your server that you don't want the steak to still have a pulse when they bring it out. Other than a REALLY rare steak, which they offered to fix right away, it was a banger of a meal. As the kids would say, "on God, this place is bussin'... no cap". We searched for top restaurants in the Eugene / Springfield area to go to after seeing The Nutcracker performance by the Eugene Ballet! The Ballet was exquisite ! We went to this Tavern on Main in Springfield and we should have guessed when we walked in and no other customers were there ! We saw their menu and thought it looks ok, kinda pricey , but thought " They were highly rated " ( now wonder if they paid Google for that , etc ) Anyway ordered a flatbread appetizer with chicken for $19 and have dinner rolls for an extra 7 dollars ! I mean what restaurant doesn't give you free rolls .... I then ordered prime rib cooked medium and when I got it I could have thought I heard it moo ... It was really rare on the outside and raw on the inside for $36 for a 5/8" small piece ! It came with mashed potatoes the potatoes were ok , my wife got the chutney covered acorn squash that was terrible at best and not edible ) even after Mr waiter said" it was there highest rated dish but not ordered very often " ... Hmmm we then decided maybe dessert wouldn't be bad , so my wife got apple crumb cake with zero crumb in it ! I got a sliver of cheesecake ... The staff were a mix of good and bad ... The boys all had a chipnon their shoulders but the women were nice but inept! The moral of this review is pass on this joke of a restaurant and lesson learned, really check reviews and cross reference them , cause like many restaurants in Oregon , alot are mediocre at best .... We discovered this little gem tucked away in downtown Springfield, OR. We sat at the bar, met the bartender and owner, and had a wonderful conversation with both of them. The food was good, and the drinks were awesome. We will definitely go back to try other foods and drinks on the menu. Nice, elegant place for a classy meal & good service. Great for a special occasion or to treat yourself with good company. The appetizers of raw oysters was fresh & very good. We got 6 for $20 today (market price). Calamari was good and service with a nice sauce. The fried brussel sprouts were over-fried. Cocktails were all very good. Our server was helpful describing which cocktails were sweet and which were not. The clams & shrimp cooked in coconut sauce was absolutely delicious. It was served with a couple of slices of toasted French bread which were over-toasted and hard even after soaking it in the yummy sauce. The 4 ounce steak was delicious and we wished it was offered in a slightly larger portion like 6 ounces but it was otherwise perfectly cooked medium with just enough pink rareness. The fried battered medallions of potatoes the steak came with were good but the asparagus was served with the woody bottom part of the stems still intact which was inedible so be sure to cut that off. Dessert offerings were delightful. We shared the cheesecake which was served with fruit compote.
