We were so lucky that we walked into the perfect dinner set-up here; after two servers were arguing about where to sit us in a mostly empty restaurant, a dapper gentleman in a suit whisked us away and seated us outside, right at the base of the Lionshead Slopes. The weather was perfect; light and sunny, but not too hot, and the view was spectacular. We didn't know at the time that we were one village away from a Food and Wine festival, which was why we were able to have such divine, quick seating at the most desirable place in town. Then there was the food. We started with the buffalo nachos and good lord; they were huge, heavenly and more than enough for two to split for a meal. The buffalo sauce was tangy and hot, the chicken perfectly crisp and as a green onion lover, I was thrilled that they were covered with it. I got the grilled cheese and the tomato soup; the grilled cheese was enormous and almost all bread; it was a bit much, but in the best way. The tomato soup had a distinct garden herb flavor, and the fries were absolutely delicious. Everyone in my party loved their food, and I would have to say that Tavern on the Square has quickly become our go-to mountain favorite. read more

I came here starving after hiking up a mountain for 3.2 miles! I was looking over the menu and the grilled cheese with the tomato soup looked good but then I remembered I just hiked uphill for like 3 hours I'm getting the short ribs! We first needed something to munch on while we waited for our meal. We ordered the bread with the sea salt butter. The bread came out warm but was a little hard to cut . It filled us up enough where we were not starving. The short ribs were so tender you could cut them with a fork which was served on top of gnocchi. The dish was good but it was a bit salty for my taste . I bit into the little cherry tomatoes to cut out the salt flavor. The serving was big so I took half back to the lodge for the next night's dinner. The dessert was the highlight of my meal. We ordered a fried blackberry pie with ice cream. The filling was just the right amount of sweet and the dough was light and flakey . I'm so glad I chose this over the donuts ! I figured that I don't get to have blackberry pie often so I might as well . This dish did not disappoint! The restaurant has great views of the mountain if you sit inside or outside. They have these huge openings by the bar that overlook a wonderful view! If your phone is going dead they even have a charging station that can charge multiple amounts of phones by their restroom. This proved to be a lovely spot for a hot drink break on our day out on the slopes. Located at the base of the Lionshead lift area, the location is literally steps from taking off your skis It's part of the Arrabelle at Vail Square resort, which would cost $2804 for a double room tonight. The restaurant is appropriately plush but the hot chocolate was reasonably priced at $5, about the same as at the on mountain restaurants We caught them about 3 minutes before closing down their breakfast service but they were still very friendly and accommodating. Beware: Bartenders on patrol I feel that it is my civic duty is tell potential customers to avoid Tavern on the Square. However if you do find yourself in the unfortunate situation of dining or drinking here, make sure you steer clear of Neil the bartender-- he is easily recognized my his smaller stature and sour demeanor -- your night is sure to take a turn for the worst. On a less important note -- the food is just bad and overpriced. If I wanted cold cuts I would have gone to my local market (and that would be much better) Cheers! I guess I had a different experience that a lot of the reviewers. Sat outside, had great service and the food was fantastic. The spinach salad had a great dressing and I thought the Mandarin oranges were a nice touch. The salmon entree was straight-up excellent. Getting beer and wine from the happy hour menu was a bonus. Another place with the perfect location right at the bottom of Eagle Bahn Gondola, so that is wonderful The food was decent. We tried the bison quesadilla and it was competently made as well as a sald which was fine as well. So we wandered around and found the Tavern while we were waiting for them to call us for our seat. Tavern is what you want when you can sit outside. You want a view. You want no hassle service. We had dinner here last night with a party of four, and overall everyone was pleased. There aren't that many people in Vail this time of year so there were only a few other people in the restaurant and they said their menu was smaller because of it being the off season. My friend had the spinach salad with almonds and oranges and she said it was "literally" the best salad she has ever had. High compliment! Our other friend had the buffalo burger and thought it was delicious. I had the angus burger on a pretzel roll and I personally didn't like it- it had a smoky taste that just didn't suit my taste. It came with fries and they were crisp and medium thickness. I was disappointed but the story will change soon... My husband had the gnocci. He said he's had better but he liked the texture and said the sauce was super delicious. The service was good and my friend appreciated the football game being shown on the big TV's. OK- here's the good news. Since I was disappointed in my main meal I decided to go for dessert. They have a Guinness Brownie S'mores dessert that is AMAZING. Seriously maybe the best brownie dessert I have ever had at a restaurant (and I do consider myself somewhat of an expert on this topic)- WOW. The brownie itself was delicious, with a mild Guinness taste that was not overpowering at all. It was warm and moist and so good. It had a graham cracker crust type thing on it, was topped with vanilla ice cream with some more graham cracker crumbs, drizzled with chocolate sauce and then surrounded by a ton of mini marshmallows that were a little toasted. Don't eat here! My in-laws are local with a home in vail. We come out to vail several times a year. This has been a staple for my family for the last few years but this year something completely different happened. We got seated at 1 and didn't leave till close to 3. It took and hour and a half to be served our lunch. When it was finally brought out to us my father In Laws chili was cold. The server, Daniel, was great and looked flustered with the kitchen running behind. He comped one glass of wine for my in-laws and my beer which I wasn't able to drink. Stopped by this cozy restaurant to have a quick drink at the bar, dan the bartender was amazing and made an incredible cocktail!! I had "the hot mezz"and highly recommend if you love mezcal like I do and a little bit of spicy..this drinks for you!! We got to reminisce back to our teen years watching an old nba final game between the bulls and utah Jazz....it was pretty cool to watch jordan and all the greats on the big screen again!! No soup spoon with the soup, no ketchup for fries, no cold glass for canned beer, no flatware. They also drop down to a partial menu in off season. I would give this place a -5 stars if that choice was available. Ordered the Shrimp and grits and on enquiry was told that it wasn't the 'traditional' shrimp and grits. Still went ahead and ordered it, only to have the dish thrown at me by one of the servers! First bite and it was COLD, looked around for the lady who took my order, no show, waited 10 mins., still no show so I thought I would eat it, assuming it was freshly prepared and told the waitress when I got her attention that the whole thing was cold - she offered to 'redo' it and take another one back with me! I live in a hotel, I'm visiting for a couple days....most of your diners are hotel guests???? Why not get it right the first time? She takes 20% off my check, even though she should have refunded the entire check. Not visiting again. I did pay the amount due but left no tip and explained why. Came here with the family after a few hours on the mountain (it's conveniently located right at the bottom of the lift in Lionshead). Exactly what we were looking for, but had not yet found in our previous two-days in Vail - fairly good food, but a place I didn't feel awkward bringing my young children to. Wife and I ordered the same. - Cobb salad with their honey balsamic dressing. Salads tasted great (but, tbh, can you really screw up a Cobb?) and hit the spot. Only minor complaint was that the spinach in their greens mix looked like it had barely a day to go before it would be unservable, Ordered a mule from the bar, the drink was excellent. But, oddly, served in a glass cup. Never seen a mule not come in copper, but not complaining. Kids got Mac & cheese - looked like cheap straight out of a box kraft. WHICH IS PERFECT! Nothing is worse than ordering Mac & cheese off a kid's menu and getting back some horrendous high falutin attempt at gourmet that my kids will never eat. One host was laughing when another was struggling (who was the most attentive person at the restaurant), our table was forgotten for quite awhile, yet we had three random servers come over to say ours was "on his way". While prior experiences had been great, it seemed like Sydney and Tyler were too busy looking at each other to roll their eyes to each other about serving customers, even if customers were trying to get their attention for ten minutes, then resorted to yelling at them to ask for water (that for some reason, was absent mindedly cleared right after being served). If Sydney and/or Tyler want to be lazy condescending bartenders, I suggest they work at a hipster dive bar and learn what an Irish coffee is. read more
