You can start off with drinks upstairs as the bartenders do a great job working their way around the bar. After drinks and lounging upstairs it's then time to go downstairs after I think 11pm. Be prepared that it is pretty hot down there if you have on multiple layers as I did. No matter nothing more drinks can't fix and an escape to the bathroom to peel off a couple of layers. I also had the chicken Cesar salad which was just ok. Nothing special. I would definitely visit again. The renaissance hotel was a great place to stay and made me feel very welcome and like a VIP. I was offered a free drink at the Bricks Bar as a reward for my loyalty to Marriott Bonvoy program (titanium elite).

I've already reviewed the London MASH restaurant so what more can I add here?…read more Well, at the time of writing, this place was only a few weeks old in Hamburg. From my experience, these guys have really hit the ground running. The restaurant located in the smart and swanky harbour area of the city. From the outside and in, it looks and feels distinctly MASH. The glass front gives you views of the harbour but also opens up the restaurant and makes it feel quite spacious. The MASH bods have effectively split the space into two areas either side of the main doors and the cloakroom. The opulent bar is in keeping with the London offering - sleek, modern and stocked with a great range of spirits (especially whiskeys) and cocktails. The restaurant is is spacious and opens out into a second dining area at the back of the restaurant. So how does MASH Hamburg fare versus MASH London? I'd have to say, on this occasion I thought it was potentially better!! The service was faultless. As soon as they realised I was English, out popped the English menu and full service in English. The menu is identical but is actually even better value given that you pay the same in Euros as you do in Sterling. The wine list is also a hugely impressive tome which has to be one of the most comprehensive in Germany. The food was sublime. I ordered my regular; 600g bone-in ribeye, mac and cheese, creamed spinach and chips. Having only dined a week previously in London I had a decent barometer but this was even better. That is some compliment. As always, I didn't have space for a dessert. I'll be back in Hamburg and when I am, I will definitely be returning.

It's a bit out of the way, but if you're into your local independent rock and indie music, then you'll definitely want to put this on you list of must-visit places. The only real drawback is that the place is just too small, so it gets very sweaty very fast. Oh well, you can't have everything :) Since writing the above review two years ago a few things have happened. 1) The bar was going to be closed (along with many nearby businesses) due to work on the above railway bridge 2) There was a large outcry; notably the Jan Delay album "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Soul" features a photo of the bar as it's front cover; The work was put back a few years 3) The popular Hamburg-based film "Soul Kitchen" featured a scene in the bar, somehow managing to make the bar look something other than tiny.

I'm not 100% sure if the translation Google was providing of their menu were accurate or just interesting interpretations, but the vegetarian menu on their website came out translated as "For the flower understanders" - Okay, either way I'm in. It was a busy time in Hamburg in the middle of the Reeperbahn festival so we were worried about getting a table, but we were seated immediately upon arrival. Our server accomodated our English and even provided a menu in English. My sun had a mushroom pasta, which he thought was good, and I had a schnitzel dish made with a celery-based "meat." Now that didn't necessarily "sound" good, but it really was a thoughtful offering to give us a schnitzel-like experience in Germany. The potatoes it was served with were well cooked and added a nice heartiness to the meal. They also have a pea soup, usually served with meat but which can be prepared vegan upon request. Freudenhaus is on a side street, a short block off of the main Reeperbahn Rd. So, very easy to get to. If you're looking for authentic German food with vegetarian options, this is a great place to go.
