What used to feel like a decent school slowly turned into an overpriced, disappointing place that doesn't reflect the cost of tuition at all. The quality of education, communication, and overall environment felt inconsistent and poorly managed. After long-time staff left, including Mr. Mason, the school never felt the same again. Everything felt like it declined--less structure, less care, and less effort put into students actually succeeding. There were teachers during my time there who were unhelpful and discouraging, and instead of feeling supported, a lot of students were just left frustrated and stuck trying to get through it. For the amount of money families are paying, the results are not even close to acceptable. It honestly makes sense why so many students end up leaving. Overall, my experience at VCA was extremely disappointing. I would not recommend this school based on my time there.

I write this review from a unique perspective as I was actually a preschooler at this very…read morelocation. As a matter of fact, I was a part of their very first graduating class of 1993! It warms my heart to see that Columbia is still in operation after all these years. When I had attended, it was a brand new preschool and truly the best of its kind. The venue was a large room sectioned off into areas per age range. I recall the place always being immaculately clean and full of awesome, educational books and toys. The part I feel had impacted me the greatest was the wonderful, dynamic staff. I still remember my teachers by name, though I'm sure they have all moved on by now. Four year olds are total sponges when it comes to learning, and I feel that the Columbia staff did a commendable job at preparing me for kindergarten. My days were filled with educational activities which involved a good balance of learning, art, singing, and play. I recall entering kindergarten and being at the top of my class. I cannot comment on the preschool's structure as it is today, but can confidently admit that it was one of the best experiences of my early childhood years. Not like pushing and shoving type, but he was held down by 2 boys at recess and beat by a third. Another time, he was on punched in the groin. There were other times when he'd get punched for no reason. Told his teacher. She did nothing. Told the principal and had 3 sit downs. Basically, they said there are too many kids and they can't watch all of them. They suggested he punch them back. They also said the other kids come from bad homes and get beat themselves or don't always eat. That is very unfortunate, but in no way is it an excuse to beat my kid whenever they please. Wrote an email to the district superintendent and got no reply. That was 2 years ago. IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR CHILD GETTING BULLIED AND BEAT UP, THEN THIS IS THE SCHOOL FOR YOU.

Now that my boys have been at this school for 2 months and having served here with Serve Santa Maria, I want to say how thankful I am for my boys to be here. The Special Ed program for my older son (5th grade) fantastic, friendly, and low-stress. Miss Cave and her team are so wonderful! And my younger son (3rd grade) is now in love with Patterson and really enjoys his teacher Mrs. Ross. It's invaluable to have a school that is safe and friendly and thoughtful. What a great school.
