The checkout area, with it's huge glass windows and high ceilings feels like you're in an airport. And just like at the airport, I always feel as if I'm forgetting something. I like seeing the wide range of local, South Australian and Australian products. Some might think three different sections dedicated to cheese throughout the store is too many, but is there really such a thing as too much cheese? Probably. But only if you eat it all at once.

Foodland Supermarkets are something for South Australian's to be proud about. Really, I think it…read moretakes a strong business model and a very proud and loyal following to stand up to other corporate giant's in the supermarket business in Australia. As for the Romeo group who owns the Foodland in Stirling, you need to go there to see why their business is thriving. Generally, you will find a lot of produce from around the world. They are very particular in offering quality products amongst bigger brand names. In particular, the Romeo group Foodlands have amazing cheese, bakery and vegetable sections. Everything is fresh and a lot of it is locally sourced. Apart from the cheese of course; they have a huge variety of some of the best cheeses from around the world. Be sure to speak to the staff about the cheese, they are very knowledgeable for a supermarket. As for the layout of this store, it is easy to navigate. It is new, clean and well stocked in a logical order. There is nothing worse when you spend a while having to walk up and down isles to find simple things like shredded coconut. I am one of those loyal customers of Foodland. I refuse to go to the larger supermarkets unless it is an emergency. Be sure to support a business that supports it's community by selling local produce.

Park Home Coles is one of the newest in Adelaide! It was…read morerenovated and rebuilt mid 2012. It's new so it's clean, well lit, large and stocks a variety of lines. The fruit & veg, bakery and deli sections are one of the largest I've seen in Coles stores. This once was my local supermarket before moving to Plympton making Kurralta Park Coles my closet supermarket. I miss Parkholme Coles.

Granted…read moreit's in a great location plus it has longer opening hours than the others nearby by an hour or two either side of opening and closing. It's also in a not bad group of shops with a games shop, video hire, hairdresser, pizza place and take away fish and chip shop. I find there are some things I can actually get cheaper from the IGA than I can at the big Supermarkets. Like daily things such as milk and bread. Last week they had Buttercup large sized bread loves out for $1.39! They also sell Jap Pumpkin in their fruit and veg section. Not even Coles or Woollies sell Jap and it's the only one I buy. Their fruit and veg is actually quite cheap too. I managed to grab some amazing strawberries here when they were out for $1.99 a punnet, I was buying at least a punnet a day. They usually have 2.5 or 5kg bags of potatoes cheaper than the supermarket. And they usually have P & N brand soft drink cheaper than the supermarket. Sometimes they have some fantastic specials with as much as 50% off the regular price so be sure to browse through the catalogue when it arrives just in case. This IGA also has a full X Lotto counter inside it, as well as a bakery counter with sweets and hot pastries to buy and best of all, or so my child says, they have a real Slushi machine with cola or raspberry! So good on a hot summer's day! Staff are fantastic and do such a good job on the public holidays when they are so packed the line goes around the shop through the isles, but no one can go anywhere else - it's about the only place open!

And they still have heaps of in date products that may be end of range or just something they get in. So stock rotation is pretty frequent in this shop. They have fantastic pre packaged meat off cuts really cheap and the dogs LOVE them. Like the ends of the hams and deli type meats, so good quality meat still. You can just as easily cut them into pieces and use them in salads or on pizza's. I have also bought really cheap, still in date, school snacks here. They have a huge range of lollies, chips and soft drinks but I try and avoid that section. Toiletries and deodorants are cheap here too. And I always buy my plastic BBQ plates here. They have the oval ones, which are heaps better size, for only $2 for a pack. Bit of everything here really so worth dropping in at least one a month to see what you can pick up cheap. This week it may be ice cream, next week it may be yiros meat, the week after..............

The scanning process was quick and packing your own bags was good as you ensure you don't squish anything. As expected, the brands are all ALDI's own so for most types of items you get one choice (except in some instances you get a healthier option too which is good). They have quite a few processed foods that look very similar to the popular brands in Woolworths and Coles. In fact, some of their own brands have packaging that look so similar that they have an almost identical colour scheme. A disappointing omission was the absence of any wholegrain products. This isn't too major but would be nice to see. The vacuum-packed meats did not look too appealing and did not look as lean as cuts at Woolworths and Coles. Fresh fruit and vegetables were better than expected. I was expecting ALDI to have a lower quality than Woolworths and Coles however they seemed about on par. Their specials are good but a lot of their fresh produce which wasn't on special was pretty much the same price as the other supermarkets. When you keep in mind that there is a 0.5% surcharge for credit cards, your fruit and vegetable shop may even be a tad more expensive than Woolworths and Coles. On the other hand, their processed and packaged goods were very reasonably priced. Would definitely go back and try it again. It probably won't replace your shop at Woolworths and Coles but it has done enough, for me at least, to ensure a visit every now and again.

The thing…read moreabout many smaller, late night supermarkets is that things can often be overpriced so if you run out of something late at night you end up paying a fortune for it. Not so here. The majority of their product is reasonably priced. You can grab a litre of milk for $1.25. Other positives about Marion Foodland IGA include the fact they have lots of staff in the store at any given time which means not too much waiting at checkouts. You know that annoying wait at late night supermarkets where only one person is on the checkout and there are ten people line up - not so here. Parking is always easy here and they have a good selection of deli products. Their bakery section is quite small but adequate and the fruit and veg section is pretty good too. If you have a late night emergency and live in the Marion area, I recommend this supermarket.

IGA has a very community-oriented marketing slant, but I still prefer to shop at smaller, more specialised outlets like butchers and small greengrocers. Even their Lenard's poultry section didn't have chicken schnitzels which was a bit of a letdown. I went there with a list and left with about 3 or so items unchecked. If this was Norwood or Stirling I would have left with every item. One of the staff members also packed away the bananas just as I was about to get some and this was a few hours before the store was due to close. The carpark here is atrocious. They must have measured a Mazda 121 or smart car to get their measurements for the spaces, so a normal car doesn't fit in the spaces and you end up squeezing into your car and trying not to scratch the one next to you. The whole experience is a bit frustrating. Shopping is bad enough, so when there are all these hassles, it can put a bad vibe on your day. I'l be sticking to Norwood and Stirling Foodlands in the future. I'd give 2 stars, but they get an extra star for even being a foodland and not a Woolworths or Coles.

My local supermarket, I default to Foodland at Blackwood over the local Coles and Woolies for two…read morereasons: 1) Although smaller size wise, greater range of brands and products in-store, 2) Brands haven't been replaced by the Supermarket's own brand, 3) Moral/ethical concerns regarding the other supermarkets' treatment of Australian producers and farmers. Moving on from my ethical leanings, Foodland also has the most amazing system when it comes to shopping trolleys. As the staffers pack and scan your item you'll be asked if you'd like a hand to take your groceries out to your car as the trolleys don't leave the store. As they overhead in the store for assistance, be amazed at the appearance of assistance in the form of a super trolley and a spare set of hands to pack your car boot, perfect when you have broken your hand and have two screechy children to load into the car. I'm always overwhelmed when I shop elsewhere at the lack of brand selection. I know its contrite but I love that I can be a bit more choosy when it comes to picking a product which satisfies all my random demands. Staff are very nice and happy to point you in the right direction at all times. A very nice local supermarket.
