On a Saturday, you need to book, even for the pubs, and we were completely caught out. Eventually, after ringing through the pubs, we managed to get a table at 8pm at Rossini. Inside, it's nicely decorated, if a bit traditional-English-Italian; various plants, wine bottles, and watercolours in shades of bue and terracotta. The main thing that hit me was the lack of noise from outside, just the noise of customers, and a slightly odd soundtrack of Westlife and Dido, though this was barely audible and, I assume, mainly for the kitchen staff. I skipped a starter but nabbed some of the other half's arancini balls - fried risotto balls - and they didn't dissapoint. Lightly flavoured and the perfect consistency, and served with a lovely rep pepper sauce. For main I tucked in to/devoured a beef, chicken, ham and cheese calzone. And it was delicious. And I finished it. The beef was nice and spicy, the same as the meatballs, and everything was heated through nicely, bound by a tomato sauce. For something like £8.95, this seemed like great value to me as I was stuffed. But, true to form, not stuffed enough, as I had a nice and simple chocolate-nut sundae for dessert. Toffee and vanilla ice-cream with whipped cream and nuts with chocolate sauce. Sounding good isn't it? We polished off the meal with a shot of limoncello each, despite the young waitress not really knowing what it was, and left feeling full and happy. A gem for Ulverston as it's not awash with this kind of eating - it's good to remember there's more than just pubs to visit. Though those are good too.

We were visiting overnight and just wanted a comfy place to stay - the rooms looked really nice on the website, so we booked here for the bargain price of £85 overnight for their most flash room (executive with bath). After a bit of a challenge finding where to park the car (the car park is diagonally opposite the hotel on the other corner of the street), we checked in which was easy and hassle free. We booked a table for dinner as we didn't really know of other options in Barrow and went to check out our room. There's a very slow elevator, or you can take the stairs. The hotel is spread over three floors and while you might initially think it seems a little cosy and close to the road, I didn't have any trouble sleeping and found it pretty quiet actually. Our room was pretty large, with an entrance foyer with open wardrobe, large bathroom with freestanding bath and a large bedroom area with couches. Everything was clean, fresh and well-presented and the bed was really comfy (although the pillows were a little hard). I wasn't expecting much for dinner, I'll be honest. But we were really impressed with the food - it was better than standard pub grub. We ate in the dining room, I believe you can also eat in the vaults downstairs while watching the football if you're so inclined. We shared smoked salmon with blue cheese fritters for a starter. This was a little weird, I'll be honest. I actually don't know what the fritters were made of, it was a bit like a blue cheese pancake. The salmon was delicious. Even though I found it weird, I still loved it so that's a bonus I guess! For main I had the 8oz prime sirloin steak, served with onion rings, chunky chips and a grilled tomato and mushroom, and I added mushroom sauce to it. This steak was really good, perfectly cooked and really well seasoned. I couldn't fault it. I struggled to finish all of this as there was a generous portion of the sides but I really enjoyed it all. We decided not to have dessert as I was well and truly stuffed. Service throughout the meal was good and while we were in a separate room tucked away from the bar, there was always someone on hand for more drinks if needed. Breakfast the next morning was pretty standard and they dealt with my request to change a few things really well, giving me extra hash browns instead of beans and black pudding. Overall, this place was a really comfortable and welcoming place to stay. The staff didn't seem to mind when we sat in the bar for an hour & half after check out, waiting for our friends to arrive from Glasgow so we could head to the stadium for roller derby! If you're heading to Barrow and need somewhere to stay, I'd highly recommend it here.

It is only a few minutes walk from the town centre (ask someone for directions) and there's plenty of parking if you're coming by car. This Pizza Hut branch is known for its friendly staffservice can sometimes be a bit slow if it's a busy time, but the staff always apologise and endeavour to get to you as quickly as possible. They do a wide range of different pizzas, pastas and salads, and are aiming to become more well known for their pasta recently - their spaghetti bolognaise is lovely! Pizzas can be a bit greasy, but are yummy if you restrict yourself to a couple of slices! It's not the cheapest of places (not when you consider you can get a pizza from Asda for £2 anyway!) BUT they do do a 20% student discount during the week if you're a student, and lots of meal deals if you're not (e.g. get a large pizza, a medium pizza and 2 starters for £20 - easily enough for 4 or 5 people). The restaurant itself is clean, warm and welcoming - fairly dark, but that makes it seem more cosy anyway! They used to deliver pizzas to your door, but seem to have stopped doing this in the last year or so. However they still do an takeaway/collection service, so you can phone them up and place your order to collect later.

Staff have always been really kind and helpful but their are often not enough staff available for the number of people they are trying to help - poor things seems too rushed but still try to be polite and helpful! The food is great - lovely choice of pizzas - but at peak times you sometimes have to wait for them to restock the buffet and then it is swooped on by all and all the ham and pineapple ones are gone in 2 seconds! However if you are ready to swoop the pizza's are really tasty

It is both authentic and surprisingly cheap! There is a happy hour every day between 5 and 6:30 pm which makes every starred pasta and pizza just £5.00! Yes its no michellin star restaurant but it has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere which makes you feel right at home! The staff are generally really attentive and friendly however some of the less experienced younger lads are a bit dozy sometimes.... We came here on sunday with 2 other friends seeking some hangover cures! We started with a garlic bread and cheese- you will need to share this as it is HUGE! It is basically a pizza without tomato and shed loads of garlic and cheese- dreamy! We came in happy hour so ordered a pasta and pizza to share between me and Gilly. We plumped for the 'ala Marcos' pizza which involved lots of ham, mushrooms and pepperoni- mouthwateringly good and a great crispy base which I love. For the pasta we got a vegetarian spinach and ricotta cannelloni covered in tomato sauce and oven baked. This was tasty and the sauce was amazing but the cheese inside was just slightly dry- but not enough to not finish it! To finish it off we shared a plate of profiteroles- these are amazing but a very large portion! Filled and covered with chocolate mousse and sweet cream this is not a pudding for dieters! All in all a great meal, slightly peeved that we had to wait a while for our bill as the young waiter forgot it, but still 5 stars as I always want to come back when we're in Lancaster.
