Don't be lured by the bright lights and awesome music. Because underneath it is the most prideful, country club church I've ever and painfully experienced. The pastors care about their European vacations and vuori clothes and the amount of money you give. When you stop giving, you will get a phone call. When you reach out with concerns, they may or may not get back to you and say something like "we are proud of what we are doing at CRB. " It's more about what you wear and what you look like and the cliques you will never be a part of. I don't write this to hurt the church. I write this to urge people to run. Run far, far away from this place and find a bible loving christian church that embraces you with open arms, where you grow closer to God and where souls are saved. Run to place that when you need prayer, they will stop what they are doing and pray. Run from a place where the sermons are about how great they are and not about how great God is. I pray this church humbled themselves and repents.

This passover I decided to go as a "civilian" -- just have my seder there. And once again the Chabad of Poway stood out as a wonderful place: that turned out to be the BEST seder I've ever gone to and I've had many wonderful seders growing up with my family in New Haven, CT, and then over the years in San Diego and Tijuana. Rabbi Mendel Goldstein is a superb and charismatic rabbi and educator. With his joy and energy he truly made the story of Passover come alive (often at seders it can zzzzzzzzzzzzzz someone as it's almost done by rote), peppered with audience participation, and lots of humor. The food was the most deliciious I've had at a seder. Instead of the (dreaded) Manischewitz wine you could choose between several wines on the table, kosher American wines and Kosher Italian wines (and maybe one I missed). One of the Italian kosher wines was so great that I ordered some online. Add to that the wonderful family atmosphere. I was raised Reform and my sister and I often talk about how when we were growing up services almost seemed to be done by rote. Not here. In every way this was a joyous, vibrant, delicious Passover. What better way to keep Passover's meaning, tradition and celebration alive?

This church holds more to conservative Christian beliefs but that in no way means they are lacking in compassion. They have an interesting blend of worship with music and worshipful dance that is done by regular people who feel so led to worship in this way, and since the dance area is behind the seats it is not at all distracting if that isn't your thing. The worship service felt intimate and real. What drew me here was their Jesus Ministry Conference http://www.newhopechurch.com/jesusministry/conference/jmconference.html When you go to church a lot, like I have, I believe you become desensitized to the things taught. These simple truths in this conference really were eye opening and refreshing. How truth really does set you free. And how Jesus can empower you to make healthier choices for your life. That you in fact can make that choice because of the power of the cross, the realization that you have that choice, is where freedom is found. This is a church that if you have some church background and are looking for a place to serve and to know Jesus in a deeper and more meaningful way, this church, its staff, its people, are all very hungry for the same thing. I felt very welcome here. If you are new to church, it's not a bad place to check out. The pastoral staff is warm and genuine and so are the people. Again, they hold to a more fundamental Biblical view but that by no means, means they are lacking in compassion. This church was there when I needed some prayer and a kick start to my faith. And, well, God really spoke to me here. And when it comes down to a review of a church, that's all that should really matter. There are lots of places to worship God. But if you are interested in or are of the Christian faith and you are dealing with the same problems over and over and can't seem to get free of them or if you are lacking in your faith, the Jesus Ministry Conference has some practical tools to learn how to deepen your faith. Its more than happy feel good sermons. Its something you can use every day. I'll be going to a conference again the next time I am in the San Diego Area if the timing is right. And if you miss the conference, there is still much to be gained from attending services here. I know I will return to either a service or a conference myself my next trip here. I was burnt out on church. From the politics to the people, I was in need of a change. I wasn't…read moreburnt out on God. I was seeking for a place that I could call my church home. I explored countless churches for over a year, even did church at home, before finding New Hope. I felt a genuine sense of acceptance and welcome. New Hope communicates to me that we are all God's workmanship and in process at multiple phases and appearances. The worship, teaching, and community align with my beliefs and I even felt that if I had a difference of opinion that I would still be welcome here to worship God in my own way. As a huge bonus my kids loved the kid church and even asked if they could come back tomorrow. This was a first from my kids. I recognize that not every church is a fit for everyone but I believe that New Hope is a transparent and authentic group of people who love God and welcome other people to love God with them.

But reviews are important for congregations too, and we've had a great experience at Beth Am over the years. I know choosing a home for Jewish spiritual life and community is very personal and subjective, and I know people who are indifferent, others who love it, and others who belong here and also have affiliate memberships elsewhere. What you can expect is a supportive congregation of welcoming neighbors with a huge emphasis on family, life cycle events, community, learning, love of Israel, tzedakah, and simply sharing in the joy of yiddishkeit. Rabbis Kornberg and Earne are compassionate, enthusiastic, engaging, and dynamic, and they put in maximum effort on many fronts each week. There's a tremendous breadth of offerings these days. On some Shabbat mornings, we might have the traditional service in the sanctuary, a separate family service for those with young kids, and another lay-led minyan in our beit midrash. There's also a monthly outdoor campfire Shabbat with music and singing, daily minyan, lecture series, learning opportunities, guest speakers, community events, women's circle, men's club, preschool, Hebrew school, and a youth lounge. Really a lot to offer. There are a lot of congregants, so even though everyone is super welcoming of new faces, it might take a while to get to know people. Come regularly, not just for holidays, to get a more heimish experience. Security is always important, and Beth Am puts tremendous efforts into minimizing vulnerabilities. The entire property is like a fortress with heavy gates, fences, and armed security, and staff is trained to coordinate with local emergency police response. It feels very very safe inside. If you're shul shopping for a conservative congregation, it's definitely worth taking a look and deciding for yourself.

Today I needed more spirituality and culture…read morethan going to the gym so I checked what was going on for free around and saw an architectural tour of this church organized by La Jolla Historical Society. As I had recently attended another tour organized by them I knew that this would not disappoint. Oh my, it exceeded expectations! I would not enter the post-modern architectural label by Charles Moore, as another fellow Yelper has said it all with details. I will tell you how this place made me feel. The Church of Nativity made me feel at home, welcomed, nurtured. The presenter/tour guide is a lawyer who grew up attending it and still does. He did an excellent job making people welcome (we were many attendees) and answered the questions with grace and knowledge. Thanks so much to him and all that participated. The gardens with orange trees are wonderful and peaceful. I loved the asymmetry in the disposition of the seating areas, the cross not placed where you would expect, the minimalism, the pristine state of everything. My favorite thing was the stars sculpture/lights adorning the altar. That is so unique. Never seen that at any church and just the craftsmanship, design and quality of materials is impressive. Another favorite part were those unique stained glass windows. So enchanting. It was a very sensorial experience for me, even if no music was played, I think I heard a celestial choir direct from heaven! A must visit hidden gem (whether you are spiritually inclined or not).

Dennis Clark was…read morestill it's pastor.  The Church itself is an masterpiece that reflects three components of its California architectural heritage: a rancho hacienda with the Church buildings set back from the street and partially hidden by trees; a mission; a monastery.  Enter the grounds, and you are in a place of peace and tranquility ... and of artistic treasures and architectural details, which are reason enough to visit Nativity.  What is really special is attending Sunday Mass here, with it rich liturgy, in one of the nicest churches in the United States.
