My wife and I stayed in the Whernside room at Yoredale House on 10th December on our road trip up…read moreto Scotland, and the welcoming hosts Steve and Sandra made this a totally delightful experience. Make no mistake, this is no ordinary bed and breakfast; the room was large and beautifully furnished with a huge comfortable bed and a modern en-suite with a real man-sized shower cubicle. There were the usual facilities for making tea and coffee, and the room featured a combined TV and DVD player with a good variety of DVDs freely available to watch too, and everything had an air of quality and great attention to detail. I personally appreciate things like free samples of shower gel and shampoo, fluffy thick towels, heavyweight curtains, a comfortable chair, homely soft furnishings, etc., to give a feeling of being in a relaxed atmosphere. But perhaps the best thing about Yoredale is the food. Sandra is an excellent cook and the dinner and breakfast in the pretty tearooms at the front was simply fantastic. The meals are prepared from a lot of local produce and as with the rooms it was provided with great attention to detail; even the bread rolls and the morning toast was from (delicious) home-baked bread. The quality of the cuisine cannot be faulted and would not be out of place in a 5-star hotel. There are also a lot of locally produced jams, preserves and chutneys, postcards, and other souvenirs for sale. The value is quite amazing too, all this for £60 per night and £28 for a mouth-watering dinner for two including wine. I would recommend this bed and breakfast without reservation wherever it was, except this is also in one of the loveliest parts of the Dales and would make a perfect base for exploring this most beautiful of locations. The one point I would make is that being in an older Yorkshire house, the stairs are very steep and may not suit someone with any sort of disability, but this is otherwise one of the best B & Bs we have ever stayed in.

The service was at 2pm and I was in London the night before, so I planned minutely the time we had to get there. The B&B was in the next village over from the wedding and I came back very early from London so we could leave at half 11. I told the boyfriend we were leaving at 11 as I spend half my life waiting for him, and this time was no exception as predictably, he was not ready. We finally left half an hour late, got caught in traffic through Ilkley and arrived at the B&B at 1.115pm. Bear in mind we weren't ready... ARGH!!!! We tried to ring the local taxi firm only to learn that he (for there was but one car in this firm) was busy for the next two hours. Having hauled myself into my dress I resolved we would just have to drive, and sort out the car at some point later so I could enjoy the reception. We were just running out, when the one of the owners offered us a lift. I can't even express how wonderfully kind she was, and how grateful we were. When we eventually made it back to the B&B later that night, we had a chance to see how nice it was. We had an ensuite room which was really nice, lovely and cosy and very country, I think. Breakfast was included, both full English and vegetarian English. Now I'm not veggie, but I do really like a vegetarian breakfast, and it was really pleasing to get the option in such a small place. When we left, we asked about local places, and they were really helpful with their suggestions. All in all, very pleasing. If you are holidaying in the Dales, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Originally built in 1723 as a 4 bedroom house, this pub/ bed & breakfast is a the perfect place to get a 'little more than your average' pub fare after a jaunt through the Yorkshire Dales. I was there this past March and enjoyed the rustic atmosphere, the vast beer selection (including Thwaites and Wainright) and some perfectly prepared steak and kidney pie. The staff is pleasant and the service was good. This is one of the few places in the village to get a beer and a bite... and if you're lucky enough to get here in the spring or summer and walk the hills, it's likely that while your dining at The Lister Arms that the families of ducks outside the window will keep you entertained. They certainly kept my attention.

Of the two pub choices in Malham The Lister Arms is by far the most stylish - a lovely old building…read morewhich has been updated so that it retains much of its original charm. There are three "rooms" in the pub area and a separate dedicated restaurant area. We had taken the precaution of booking a table for two in the restaurant area at 8pm on Wednesday evening which was wise as it was a busy evening. We were given a friendly but somewhat harassed greeting by one of the young waiting staff. After a long day walking we were hungry so we made our choices quickly from the well priced, for Malham, and good looking menu which was made up in the main of "pub classics" Sensing that things might be going slight off the rails in the kitchen we ordered a cold starter of smoked salmon in the hope that this might be served relatively quickly while I had the sirloin steak for my main and B went for the gammon with bubble and squeak. I won't drag this sorry tale out but our starter never did arrive, we were offered two sets of dishes destined for other tables and our main courses took over an hour to arrive. When we finally did get to eat our supper it was tasty and well presented (possibly helped by the fact that we had drunk a bottle of wine while waiting). When the guy behind the bar asked if we had enjoyed the meal I mentioned the problems with service: he shrugged and said it was a busy night in the kitchen due to a large number of "walk in" diners. In my naïveté I thought that a booking system was designed to avoid such difficulties and indicate when the kitchen was at capacity point - not at The Lister Arms unfortunately.
