Had my bar mitzvah there, got married there, and many other simchas as well including children's baby naming ceremonies. Both I and my kids went to nursery school there too. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a dynamic Jewish congregation in Metro Detroit.

My bank received not one penny from them This used to be the gem of Detroit.... No longer....my family were members and worked there for generations .. it has changed... their constituents and employees are all new. They charge the constituent excessively, the staff is not trained , and they have no respect on the phone ... just excuses when it is time to pay for services rendered. They had a Bar Mitzvah during Rosh Hashanah /Yom Kippur if that tells you anything more. That is a huge nono. Go elsewhere.

Sure, I learned how to read biblical Hebrew in the 2nd grade, but I was never taught the meaning behind it. Instead of making me appreciate where I stood religiously, it made me want to be less observant. I didn't pick up an interest in Judaism until high school when I had no commitment to a religious education program. The only thing that keeps me coming back is Cantor Greenbaum and his unique voice that lends itself to the chanted prayers. Other than that, I'd easily join a different synagogue.

It is a very friendly place with great clergy (Rabbi Bob Gamer, Cantor Sam Greenbaum and Rabbie Emeritus, David Nelson) and helpful office staff. Members are encouraged to wear nametags on Saturday morning so that people get to know each other. There are frequently kiddush lunches after services. There is a first rate pre-school plus a Hebrew School that seems to get better every year. While there is a large older contingent, there seems to be a growing number of young families becoming active. Worth checking out!

We feel very fortunate to have met Rabbi Wine and we were devastated by his death in a tragic accident. Ideologically and otherwise, the Birmingham Temple is a very special place.

They did a nice job of officiating the services and keeping everything organized (there was a very large turnout, at least 150 people present). Some minor issues with the sound system/microphones, but otherwise a VERY pleasant experience.
