Used this vet clinic twice since moving here. They have a nice facility so if you want a fancy waiting room they are the spot for you. If you want a vet that pays attention to your dogs listed allergies and makes recommendations based on that look elsewhere. My dog is allergic to all birds and was told I should try out a poultry derived probiotic - even tho I mentioned my dog cannot even tolerate hydrolyzed food. Good thing I'm the kind of dog mom that super checks the labels and saw it was poultry based before administering it. Also if you need medication from Chewy they require you mail it because I guess they're too busy not reading your file or ingredient lists to respond to chewy's requests for approval. This place has been horrible since Rita Retired and sold it!!! Last year I brought my dogs for there yearly check ups. One week later one of my dogs started showing kennel cough, then all four ended up sick. My dogs do not even go for car rides, they never leave the house. When I called to say something they wanted me to bring my dogs back and was told it didn't come from there. And they wouldn't cover the antibiotics or visits. This year during their yearly I had to point out one of them had a chipped k9 tooth. There was no exam of their mouth or ears. And consistent push for unnecessary lab work. When one of them was at emergency vet three weeks before and had labs done there. They wanted same blood work done. I'm not sure why I have to point out to check my dogs gums, teeth and ears. They care nothing for your animals and just want your money. The place has never been worth anything since Rita sold it. read more

Don't be fooled by the nice country setting where this vet is located. These folks will gouge you blind. I should have learned the first few times I took my dog there for a simple check-up, each time costing close to or above $700, which I am expected to cough up without batting an eye. This time, it was for his annual checkup. Two techs (I guess) came in and started my dog's exam. I never learned their names or what their jobs were. The vet came in, spent maybe one minute with me, never gave me one bit of advice about caring for my dog, didn't discuss his food, his weight, none of the usual stuff. All she did was push a $200 anti-itch shot on me, while claiming not to know how much it cost. With a couple of vaccine updates, a screening panel and the one minute sales pitch from the vet, the total was over $700. They would not have given me an estimate if I had not asked. I turned down the anti-itch shot and will seek an alternative method. What a rip off. I thought nothing could surprise me in these crazy times but this was by far one of the worst vet experiences I've had. read more

We had a horrible experience at this vet with our 2 1/2 year old Rottweiler girl. She is very loving and sweet but like many other dogs has a slight anxiety about going to the vet. They wanted us to sedate her senseless, and immediately asked us to muzzle her, for a blood draw which had never been done to her before. As she tried to lick their hands and communicate with them all they could do a step back from her as if she was so dangerous. We ended up driving three hours to our vet that we had before we moved here. They welcomed her with open arms, got on the floor with her, and in 10 minutes everything was done with no ramifications. It is evident Tender Touch works with dogs of a smaller breed that are not in any way Intimidating looking. The techs are rude and communication is vague. We also never see the vet apparently if there's no rabies shot involved unless you have an emergency. When I finally decided to voice my opinion and complain about their practice, they responded with a thumbs up. I was told the animals during boarding are left alone from the time they close the building until they open in the morning with no chance of being able to go outside in a fenced in run or having people tend to them. That could mean my dog would've been alone for 10 to 12 hours, which is unacceptable in our family. I will now drive three hours whenever she needs to see the doctor with people who truly care for Pets until I find some place in this area that I feel comfortable with. read more

I was referred to them for my two cats, one of whom is diabetic. I submitted the form indicating the insulin administration regimen and so forth, specified the referring clinic in the form, and basically included all of the medical information the form requests. Tender Touch never responded!!! So a couple of weeks later I called, and found out that they only board their own patients who are special needs. This means that either SAH lied to me and they don't take referrals, or Tender Touch is lying, because their form makes it super clear that they do take in special needs pets. I am kind of pissed, because we were counting on this, and the web form at https://www.tendertouchvet.net/services/custom2catboarding makes it pretty dang explicit that they do accept special needs kitties. This is awful, awful because it amounts to fraud and deception and if I had known up front that they don't actually provide the services they are advertising, I'd have been calling other boarders weeks ago. As such I may have to cancel my vacation to visit my in-laws this xmas. I am not pleased at all, Tender Touch Veterinary Hospital I'm at my wit's end trying to find a boarding solution for my cats. These boarders whose online presence claims to take special needs/diebetic cats, actually don't unless the cats are their patients. I'm kind of pissed because I had submitted a booking at Tender Touch Veterinary Hospital where the form asks for specific details, the cats' healthcare provider, the medication regimen, etc. and I never heard back so I called today only to find that the booking form is a straight-up lie (because apparently the company changed ownership and they never bothered to update the web site). Under the new ownership, they will only accept a special needs cat if the cat is their patient. I'm sorry but I am not going to change from Scarborough Animal Hospital because they saved our cat's life and we are grateful for their thoughtful care of our kitties. People, if you buy a business which is offering services that can be booked online and you choose to either discontinue or change how you offer those services, be sure to update your online presence and make it crystal clear that you don't offer these services any longer. If I could give these people less than zero I would. It just burns my biscuits to know I paid these clowns $200. For nothing. They are so inept at a simple diagnosis of my dog has fleas. The vet tech said they didn't know why my dog was itching. Just gave me an antibiotic and anti itch pills and sent me away. A few days later when my dog was still scratching. I got down and used a magnifying glass and started looking. I'm 71 and that's why I took the pooch to a vet. I found flea poop and eggs on my dogs back. All he needed was a flea shampoo to remedy the problem. But I'm out $200. If there were any justice in this world, I would get my money back. Or if it were 50 years ago, I'd go back and twist their stupid head around until they gave me my money back. We love love love our long term kennel, but our doggy recently developed a health condition prior to leaving on a trip. We were going to cancel our travel, but fortunately discovered Tender Touch. We are so happy that we boarded her there! From the start we were treated compassionately, our fears calmed. I have been a customer there for 12 years and have spent thousands of dollars there ! I loved the doctors and Rita along with the front desk people and the Techs . I don't know what has happened ?! But I can't even get my dog in for a visit for multiple concerns ! Now . They keep telling me to go to an emergency vet ! I don't want to take her there ! They don't know her ! She is a chihuahua and had been pregnant last year, they wouldn't even get her in for an ultrasound to see if her babies were ok !! I have never met such insensitive people in my LIFE !!! Dr. Rita DeMeuse is upfront and outspoken about what she believes, in her experience, is the right thing to do for your pet. I, personally, appreciate that! I always ask for Dr. Rita when one of my Boxers needs to be seen. She is always willing to listen to me and consider my thoughts. I have had Boxers for 15 years and have educated myself on the health issues they face, treatments, expectations, etc.. I find that Dr. Rita respects my experiences and the knowledge I've gained through the years. I listen to her advice and weigh it with what I know about my breed and my experiences. I have also built a group of specialists I don't hesitate to consult - cardiologist, internist, oncologist, reproduction specialist, surgeon . . . I know that's probably not typical, but I encourage you to think about it. It gives me a wealth of knowledgeable doctors I trust with the lives of my animals to call on. My advice is educate yourself. Build a relationship with your vet. It IS a two-way street! read more

My French Bulldogs were treated like royalty! They were so wonderful at communicating with me. My dogs were boarded together and played outside with only each other, so the stress level was kept to a minimum. I truly believe they loved my dogs. French Bulldogs require extra love and attention and will give it back twofold! As far as the complaints on Tender Touch not being able to see a pet during emergencies is the exact reason why emergency pet care was created. Just like your doctor office's .....sometimes scheduling makes it impossible to accommodate. This has happened to me a few times with a different veterinarian. Just poor service through and through. We've had two of our dogs stay there on multiply occasions as well as receiving their primary care through Tender Touch's facility. My wife really tried sticking through with them. But you know what, I do not need to explain all the stupid crap they did because it's the last event that really matters. One of our dogs needs a special diet, as discovered overtime with Tender Touch and other surrounding vets. So when we boarded them recently, we obviously gave them the food and we trusted a Vet staff to understand these simply instructions concerning feeding. Came home after 3 days and discovered once home that over half the food was in the bag. My wife finally stopped giving them the benefit of the doubt and got rightfully angry. It took over 4 days for them to give us a answer to what our dogs are? You really think I believe a answer that takes 4 days to receive. To be honest, it's just crazy. They hold so little accountability that I do not know how it is supposed to be okay that to this very moment no ones sure what the dogs I'm going to Scarborough's Vet now. My parents dropped Tender Touch and now it's my turn. I'd be a bit careful before boarding your dog at Tender Touch. Tender Touch has been taking care of my very difficult cats since they were babies, and are now nine years old. They have always been kind and caring, and have even diagnosed one of my boys with urinary tract issues and have helped me keep him healthy for the last five years of his special diet. The whole staff is very caring and know each of my boys by name, and even ask about Houdini's health when I'm just stopping by to pick up food. I have every confidence in all of the doctors and staff, knowing that each one cares for every animal that comes through their doors. I have left both boys in the care of their staff over weekends, and they have even made room for them when we were suffering through a family emergency that included traveling at the last minute. I've had occasion in the past several months to assist 2 families after they were treated poorly at Tender Touch. Both families had dogs that absolutely needed to be euthanized and the vets at TT wouldn't do it. Both were clients there and were made to feel guilty for asking for a service that clearly needed to be performed. This was not euthanasia for convenience of the owner. One dog was extremely aggressive and had ATTACKED several people. One dog was a senior who had such a weak hind end he kept falling and had to be helped up. Both dogs were much loved members of the family and making this decision was not easy for them. I will never recommend Dr Hill or Dr Demeuse after seeing what they put these families through. Pre Note: Despite what Yelp shows, I am from the Greater Portland area of Maine - NOT San Francisco CA. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I left one vet practice because they were disrespectful of my time, the final straw being my dog's anxiety having to wait 1 1/2 hrs only to be told they wouldn't be doing his procedure for another hour. I was also scolded for using a natural remedy for my dog's ear issues instead of buying their expensive chemical one. Tender Touch was recommended to me by fellow pet owners. I called them, they were taking new patients, and the records were transferred. Dr, Barber figured out the cause my dog's ear issues and recommended a different ear wash. This gentle one did the trick and no further treatment was needed. The ones my old vet was prescribing were irritating my dog's ears and exacerbating the problem. I spend hundreds of dollars unnecessarily because the vet didn't consider that my dog screaming and fighting me when I used the ear wash could be because it was excruciatingly painful. The lobby at TT is large, so there is always a place to wait with your dog away from other dogs. Like most businesses, they have busy times - especially in the morning when people are dropping pets off for daycare or procedures before they go to work. Likewise, lunchtime is typically busy, as is end of day after work. When I call during the busy times I am often put on hold but I don't mind because I have heard the people at the front desk put calls on hold while they served the customers at the counter. I'm sure if I said NO when asked if I could hold they would ask me if it was an emergency. It's hard to wait, but if they doubled their front desk staff so no one had to wait, their rates would go up and then people would complain about that. As for forgetting vaccinations and not knowing everything, yes we expect people in the medical profession to be perfect but they are human and pet owners need to stay on top of the things to ensure that their fur babies are getting what they need. Keep your own records and if a vaccine schedule doesn't seem right, ask them about it. If you have questions, ask them!!! You get a bill when you leave and those bills contain what was done as well as upcoming vaccines and tests you need to remember. Do you pay attention to those? And when you go into the examining room, do you verify with both the vet tech and the vet that what they are doing and administering concurs with your records? My dogs - both the 2 yo and the 6 mos puppy - have seen more than one vet. I'm not sure if Dr Barber is there any more but when my GSD did not want a shot in the hind leg (he's better if they are giver in the front legs) and started to freak out, she remained calm. She suggested something for the 2 of us to do and it was successful. My dog did not want the shot but he did not even growl at her. That is huge because he did not like one of the vets at the old place. My 6 mos puppy was spayed yesterday by Dr Hill and things went well. She even called me just prior to the surgery to let me know that one of the liver enzyme tests in the pre-op blood work was slightly elevated, but not enough to be concerned about or postpone the surgery. I will be going back in 6-8 weeks for more blood work. If the number is the same, it is most likely my dog's normal baseline. If it's elevated further, we will discuss treatment. When I went to pick up my dog the vet came and sat with me to go over the post-op meds and instructions - like keep my 6 mos old puppy quiet for 2 weeks. Yikes! But better safe than sorry. My dogs' well being is important to me and I have my part to play. I listened to what she had to say and asked questions. As for the review on here where the poster claimed that Dr, Demeuse said "she didn't care if I had to put my dog down because I couldn't afford the surgery," I want to remind people that that was most likely the poster's interpretation. Vets don't typically do payment arrangements the way physicians do. Also, most vets work for a practice, not themselves, so there are protocols on the financial side they must follow. It stinks when you feel euthanasia is your only option but vets do care about animals. Their hands are often tied. If you feel your pet needs a procedure you can't afford, start a GoFundMe account and post it all over social media. I have helped several people I know who needed help paying for a lifesaving procedure for their dog. Don't give up, but don't put the onus on the vet - because that isn't fair. People don't become vets to make money. So while Tender Touch may not be perfect, I am currently happy with their level of care and service. I am also aware that as a dog owner, I am the parent and I have a responsibility to be my pet's patient advocate. read more

I've been taking my fur babies to Tender Touch since I moved to Maine 12 years ago. I loved Dr. Rita, she was the best! She had the once monthly vaccination clinic that saved everyone lots of money and she did monthly discounts on different services. If she didn't know the answer to a doggie problem she would recommend a specialist. Then, she sold the practice. I didn't know and took one of my pets in and everything was different....different doctors, different techs, different front office people. Nobody knew me and my pets anymore. I was shocked and dismayed. I've continued to go there but don't really feel comfortable anymore. Things are being overlooked and now that you still can't go into the building with your pet, you have no idea what they're doing. Dr Rita Demuse is one of the most awful veterinarians there is. She is rude and dismissive and fails to understand how to decently treat people. I left Tender Touch after she told me she didn't care if I had to put my dog down because I couldn't afford the surgery. I had just paid for one surgery on her knee and she tore the other one months later. No one let me know that this could happen or was even a possibility. When I brought my cat here, who is my literal baby child, they were very very very very rude. They kissed my cat without my permission. WHO KISSES A CAT THAT'S NOT THEIRS? I cannot say enough good things about Tender Touch! The facility is clean, the prices are fair, and the staff are all incredibly loving with my pets. Though it can get busy, I have never felt that my pets or myself have had anything less than a wonderful experience. The front desk staff greet my pets and do their best to make sure we are seen promptly. I have seen both Dr DeMeuse and Dr Hill and have had wonderful experiences with them. They take the time to listen to me and my concerns as well as bond with my pets. As a somewhat overprotective pet parent, I am very comfortable with the staff and greatly appreciate both their patience with my questions and the effort they put in to make my pets comfortable. We have been coming to Tendertouch since 2007 when we adopted a rescue dog from the south. Molly was very skittish and Dr. Demeuse was very compassionate and took the time to let Molly become more comfortable with her before beginning the exam. When we adopted kittens, after losing our 18 year old kitty, we took them to her as well. She is just as great with them as she is with Molly. I can not say enough good about Dr. Demeuse. I ordered ticks control medication for our dog through Petco and after waiting for 3 weeks the order was automatically canceled because they could not reach our vet to verify the prescription. One of the most incompetent vets I have ever been too. They tried to over charge me to get my pit fixed on one of their specials. They never gave me the paper work for a rabies shot and refuse to tell me if they gave him one. They do not answer messages. It seems that the staff is too good to deal with people. Normally I wouldn't write a review, but I feel I need to. I have been going here for a couple of years on regular appointments for my two cats and then bringing the in on off times to have their nails clipped as this is hard for me to do. Before covid happen they started charging $25.00 a cat to have their nails done and that was fine with me . But I call and made an appointment for their physical and yearly shots and said you can add a note to have their nails cut. The receptionist told be they did not have room to do that??? They are already giving them a physical and shots but you don't have room to cut their nails,(REALLLY WHAT DOES THAT MEAN). She asked me to bring them to a groomer. As a VET would know house cats don't travel well and hate to go out and are terrified even going out. I am paying for them for a service and expect to be able to have my cat's nails clipped. So if they really don't want to clip cat's nail or maybe that should state that instead of we really don't have room to do that.(Bad excuse) Multiple times they said it is easy to cut the nails and they did show me how, but I could not do it. So I have left this vet and am going to go to a person that truly understand your pets and their needs. read more

Love all the vets and staff at this practice but Dr. Rita's extremely rude and blaming manner when someone in my household decided to euthanize her dog (a heartbreaking and well thought out decision). When we brought the dog back to the shelter where she was adopted from they couldn't believe a vet would say things like Dr. Rita said, and reassured us that the dog's issues were 100% not our fault and were a medical condition rather than a behavior problem. They worked with us to secure the information necessary to perform the euthanasia that Dr. Rita refused to do and treated us with kindness and compassion on one of our most difficult days. I completely concur with the two negative reviews. Customer service is terrible from the front desk staff to the doctors. I have so many examples I simply cannot share them all here but I will share one that stands out & still makes my blood boil. My pup was having some skin issues. I brought him in, Dr. looked at him & prescribed shampoo, wipes & cream. All pretty expensive. At the same time I made an apt w/ the groomer to see if that might help. The apt was shortly after the original visit so I did not have the opportunity use the wipes or cream. After his groom apt, the groomer informed me that he had fleas, that's it. No need for all the wipes, shampoos, creams. So, I tried to return the unused wipes & cream and was told once it leaves the facility they will not take it back. It was about $100 of useless products that they sold me. Then while standing at the front desk waiting for something else (don't remember what) I was talking to whoever was at the front desk and mentioned that the policy was really not acceptable, I was not being rude, and she turned around & walked away as I was in mid-sentence. Our dog LuLu has received great care vet care and boarding services over the years from Dr. Rita and staff. Our Golden is 12 years old. Late in 2017, staff found some very small bumps in LuLu's neck, then referred us to a local vet specialist. Early detection led to a Lymphoma diagnosis with successful treatment. plus LuLu is still in remission. When we go away (like the next few days) or when LuLu needs care, we know the Tender Touch staff will take great care of her. read more

Our initial wellness visit with Dr. Demeuse was great. The front desk staff was wonderful and the facilities were maintained well. Then it all went downhill. Dr. Hill is very disrespectful and will accuse you of doing things to harm your animal when it is simply a lack of understanding. Isn't that part of a vet's job, to advise and educate??!? Although, I strongly question her knowledge as she didn't even know when my animal could have certain vaccinations. Dr. Demeuse wrote out a vaccination schedule that I was following and Dr. Hill disagreed with giving my animal her shots until a vet tech stepped in and agreed with Dr. Demeuse's logic. After all that, Dr. Hill "forgot" to give my animal a vaccination during that visit, which resulted in me having to reschedule another appointment and pay ANOTHER visit fee. I came back a couple weeks later and Dr. Hill had no idea who my animal was and that she had just met her a short time ago. Her attitude was, again, just unbelievable. Such an air of cockiness. While she may be an animal lover, she certainly is not a customer advocate and I strongly question her qualifications. The animal owner pays the bills so customer service does go a long way, Dr. Hill. If you go there, only see Dr. Demeuse. I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

I really can't say enough good things about Dr. Rita and her staff. We have 3 Dachshunds and 2 other large dogs. 1 is a pup and 1 is a 14 yr. old yellow lab. We have had many dogs throughout our lives and with that we have dealt with several different vets. We can say whole heartedly that none have been as thorough and caring as Dr. Rita. She has been an advocate for us when dealing the emergency hospitals when a visit to them has been required and she has also delivered us info even when she is on her day off. She works tirelessly for our pets and I can't imagine what we would do without her. I also read the negative reviews on here and I do see how that some people who may be a bit delicate might feel that there might be some tough love given to a pet owner that they might feel is hard to take but I am here for the pets and not to get propped up by some feelgood vet who knows less about the care of pets and more about the new way people want their feelings to remain unhurt. Life is hard and sometimes the truth hurts but at least its the truth and not some made up diagnosis that a less than knowledgeable vet made up just get you out the door and make you feel good about yourself and take your money with no results. There are spas for that. I am sure my grammar is less than perfect but I do not do these very often and some of these reviews are done by people who look like professional one and two star complaint generals. Owning a pet is not without cost. She does vaccine clinics that I believe take a huge burden off pet owners and help some pets get the care their owners might not normally be able to afford. In the past year, my children and I went from no pets to being a 3-dog home. We first took in a rescue dog and then adopted two puppies about 6 months apart. We have been to Tender Touch a LOT in a very short time given initial vaccinations, follow up vaccinations, spaying and neutering, and dental work. I cannot say enough good things about Tender Touch! They helped us manage the transition from no dogs to 3 dogs, including one with serious past neglect. This past year could have felt completely insane, but they helped make it fun, healthy and smooth. We are always greeted warmly and seen timely. The entire staff makes a point of actively listening to our questions and then answering thoroughly, in a way that ensures we really understand. Dr. Hill and Dr. Demuse are excellent in their approach to our new fur babies, but I most appreciate how they worked to ensure my kids really understood what their new puppies need from them consistently to be healthy and well-adjusted. I found the entire staff to be realistic and low-key in their responses to my concerns - meaning, they stayed calm and helped me to do the same. We have boarded our dogs there several times and I can do so with great confidence that my dogs are happy, healthy and well-loved while we are away. Additionally, Marie is an outstanding groomer! She is patient and very talented. She has even been able to groom our little rescue dog, which is quite an accomplishment given how nervous our little one can get. Marie handled it all with ease. I did not want to even give a 1 star for this. My sister in law has loved her old man kitty for years and years. She is the most compassionate, and kind person I know, and LOVES all types of animals. She had made the very difficult decision to humanly euthanize him today, but as if today was not hard enough for her to get through, Tender Touch and the vet, Rita made her experience all the worse. The vet was beyond insensitive to her and made her feel as though she was doing this as a convenience. She made inappropriate comments and made her feel guilty for choosing this option. Her and my brother have been caring for their kitty for years and have brought him into the vets countless times to be able to give him a better quality of life. Unfortunately he was no longer able to move his hind legs, get around on his own or see. No one should have to defend their decision to euthanize their fur child. I was so beyond upset to even hear that a vet hospital could have such horrible bed side manner. I don't care how many pets a vet has euthanized over their practice, each client who comes in should be treated with dignity and respect and not made to feel like a monster. Thanks to Rita at Tender Touch and their staff, my sister in law is now even more devastated than today was anticipated to be. read more

Any bad review on Dr. Rita is 100 % true. I was appalled at how insensitive and rude she was. When I brought my 18 yr old cat to be euthanized (a truly traumatic decision to make) she compared the situation to "putting grandma down because she's old"--HER WORDS. My cat literally could not walk anymore. She scolded me for "Not bringing him in for tests a year ago", before actually LOOKING AT HIS CHART to see that I had spent nearly $400 less than a year ago at her office having different tests done to figure out what was going on with him. She didn't even look at his file before seeing us. She had me second guessing my decision up to the last second when he died in my arms. I left the office sobbing and alone. She made me feel awful-- as if the decision wasn't hard enough to make. I haven't gotten over the whole experience. I miss my cat every day, and I hate that my last memories with him were spent frantically wondering if I was making the wrong decision. (I DID make the right decision. I know I did.) That all being said, the vet techs were incredibly sweet and helpful, I wish one of them had been able to stay in the room with me while Dr. Rita administered the shot and told me that my cat was "fighting" the tranquilizer.
