My friend and I meet for our birthdays twice a year and this was her dining choice! I was excited to try this place because I've heard all good things about it. We both arrived around 11:30 AM and were seated shortly after my friend signed in. The restaurant is quaint, yet seated a lot of parties of all sizes. The employees were very friendly. It took us a while to decide what to order since the menu is pretty extensive. My friend ordered the Premium Tendon and I ordered a California Roll, a small Teriyaki Bowl and a side of Maitake Mushroom. I was impressed with the California Roll because I loved the presentation! It was also very flavorful! The restaurant of the food we both ordered was just ok. I'm Japanese and have grown up eating lots of different tempuras, but I felt this restaurant's was just ok...there wasn't anything that was special about it. Maybe it was because I drove almost an hour to get there, but I wouldn't make a special trip again. The main reason I rated this place only two stars was because my friend and I were asked to leave even though there was food left in front of her. Keiko came up to our table and said that there are people waiting...so we got up and left. I understand that there may be time limits, but if there are, it should be posted in the restaurant and/or customers should be told ahead of time. In as many restaurants I've been to, I've NEVER been asked to leave and neither has my friend (and she's a foodie!)! When we walked out, there weren't many people waiting for a table. I will NEVER return to this place again! There are so many other restaurants that will treat their diners much better than the way we were treated.

This restaurant pleasantly surprised me. As a vegetarian, I was hesitant about what I would be eating and if it would be a filling meal. I walked away enjoying my meal and full -they had a handful of vegetarian options available on the menu. I ordered the vegetable tendon - it came with an assortment of vegetable tempura, runny yolk egg, white rice with sauce and a bowl of miso soup. I did not end up eating the soup because sometimes there are fish products in them and I didn't ask our waiter about it.

We had the zaru soba and tempura combo. Huge portion. I liked the celery shoyuzuke and ginger w gobo that are at the table. I got a side of daikon oroshi as well. This def is more of a tempura place. Tempura was really good. Nicely seasoned and not greasy. I'd like to come back and try their veggie tempura. I am one of those people who hate egg yolk so if you are like me, skip the egg. Everyone else loves it so lol if you do it's a nice addition to the tempura. You can make your own TKG. The soba was okay. The noodles weren't the best quality and the tsuyu was too sweet. It satisfied my soba craving but it wasn't the best.

Ready for tasty shrimp tempura? This is the place. Very good and a must place to try. Service is top notch and just what is expected. The atmosphere is a typical local restaurant nothing fancy. They have two containers on the table with a ginger and root mixture and the other one with a celery mix, very good.

Tempura was pretty great but it could have been a bit more crispy and light. There's going to be a wait but it's not too bad. Parking could suck though so do a loop. It's mostly worth it but the busyness kind of discourages me. Tempura: Must get! This is what you come here for and it's in the name so you have toooo. I have a pickiness for tempura and it's pretty great here but it doesn't live up to the hype and the wait tbh. It also gets pretty expensive but yeah just basically get any combo plate or bowl and you'll have a good time. Soba: get! This is what I was pleasantly surprised about. This isn't in the name but I would say this was the better unexpected twist of my experience here. Just very clean and subtle flavors that coat the noodles that are a great texture. Make sure to put some wasabi in too! Food: 8/10 Service: 8/10 Atmosphere: 7/10 Value: 6/10

If you accidently routed here expecting Carl's Jr, you will be sorely disappointed by Carlos Junior, but will find something a bit different, and ultimately so much better. The setting was unexpected, a sushi bar with the majority of seating behind curtains, hidden away. Sitting down, I noticed many things that made this place special; from the step-by-step instructions to the free sides of marinated celery and a blend of picked ginger. The manu was brought out and was easy to follow. For a place tha specializes in tempura, they also seemed to have mastered soba and sushi. While not pictured, I got the Carlos Jewel Box, which is a mixture of squid, shrimp, and scallop tempura; salmon, tuna, and yellowtail sashimi; miso soup; and rice all for $20. Worth it in my opinion. The sushi was fresh, and the plating was marvelous. Soba can come hot or cold, and the miso soup featured mushrooms which I had never seen before! The service was attentive and kind, nothing to fault there. While slightly on the pricier side, I can see why with the sheer number of components on each dish, and the flavors they are able to achieve though it. Good job Carlos!

Arrived Sunday at 12:45pm, first visit. Was afraid that there was a wait, but only 4 other tables serviced at the time. As soon as we sat down the restaurant filled up completely by 1pm. I was going to try Carlos's bento box, but when I asked the server the bento or sukiyaki tempura she said sukiyaki. BF got the tempura plate. While waiting, we fell in love with the pickled celery (condiment on table). Super delicious! Our lunch came out in less than 10 mins, piping hot always a good sign! I have to admit, I think this is the best tempura I ever had! Light and crispy, clean and just went so well! I thought we were going to go but we finished everything! Would definitely stop by here again when I'm in the area, enjoy!

After having amazing tempura bowls in Japan, my husband and I were so excited to find this place. We came here on a Saturday night and were pleasantly surprised that there was no wait. There was plenty of parking in the back of the restaurant. I got the Special Tempura Bowl and my husband got the Special Tempura Plate. We bother really liked our meals! The food quality is top notch and the tempura was so crunchy. The tempura shrimp and egg are our favorites. Service was great, friendly and quick. Would love to come back and try their sushi and soba.

I had the shrimp tempura and white fish combo with miso soup and rice. Unfortunately, the tempura was very disappointing. When the dish arrived, the batter on most items looked pale and undercooked instead of light and crisp. The scallop and squid pieces were especially bad--there was too much batter, and I had to pick the seafood out because the coating was heavy and doughy. The shrimp tempura was also soggy and not properly cooked. There was a lot of inconsistency on the plate. The pumpkin was over-browned and seemed like it may have been cooked separately or held too long, while the shishito pepper was fine. The egg was served with an undercooked white, and when I mentioned it, I was told that was intentional. I don't mind a runny yoke but I do not eat undercooked egg whites. Plus the tempura batter was mushy and undercooked on the outside of the egg. The white fish itself was fine, but overall the tempura seemed like it was coming out of unstable or poorly managed frying oil. I also noticed a slightly scorched oil smell and that other tempura dishes being served around me didn't look much better. Service was slow to check in after the food was dropped off, which made it difficult to address issues early. By the time I sent the shrimp back, most of the meal experience was already affected. The ambience also wasn't very comfortable--quite loud and not really conducive to a relaxed meal. Overall, I wouldn't return for tempura here based on this experience.

I've lived in Torrance all my life, but somehow only discovered this spot after moving to Long Beach and now it's one of our go to comfort places. The tempura here is amazing. I usually get the combo tempura plate and always add an extra egg because I love mixing it into my rice with a little red pepper. The dipping sauce (I think it has some kind of relish in it) is so good and really elevates everything. The combo comes with shrimp, fish, sweet potato, and other seafood tempura, and it's always fresh and satisfying. It's definitely become our feel good spot. Even my parents love it and come often which says a lot because my mom is very picky. Customer service is consistently great, and the ambiance makes you feel like you're in a small restaurant in Japan. Parking is also super easy with both free street parking and a garage nearby.

Looked for a place for lunch in Torrance, since I was in the area and found this place on Yelp with so many reviews. Was worried there would be a wait for Saturday lunch, but was sat immediately. Ordered the salmon and ikura bowl with tempura combo. The salmon bowl came with thick slices of the softest, melt in your mouth salmon. It was quite a filling for myself with the tempura. The tempura had such a good crisp to it. I liked that their menu had many different items and I'm excited to come back and try more! The service was great- seems like a very authentic Japanese place! Interesting to find out the founder is from Peru!

Tempura Small Bowl with Salmon Sashimi.

The food is light and reminded us of Japan with how thinly fried the tempura was. The Salmon was fresh and delicious as well. Service was quick and got seated right away on a Sunday, the spot was super cute and simple which makes the food even better. Definitely a spot to come back too.

Great place for a solid meal. Decent amount of seating. Good service. Clean restaurant. We ordered the dragon roll and tempura roll as appetizers. To be honest it wasn't exactly knock your socks off but decent. I got the udon combo with salmon sashimi. It was good but the sashimi was a little lacking in quantity and the rice was more than one could eat with such a small amount of salmon. Udon was good but not extraordinary. Friends for the tempura plate which I probably should've gotten because it looked better than my food.

Tendon Tempura Carlos Junior Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Tendon Tempura Carlos Junior

Can they host large parties around 13?

I believe that they can accomodate a larger party, but I would call ahead to make sure that they can do that.

    Is outdoor seating available?

No they took out the outdoor seating

Do they open in Sunday? I called them several times but never answered

Their posted hours show open daily.

Do you cook all the tempura in the same oil..? Or are veg tempura cooked in a separate oil. A vegetarian question. Thanks.

It says you no longer have outdoor dining, but do you have patio dining?

I was there about a week ago, and they did not have any outdoor dining set up at all. The restaurant did not appear to have a patio in front or back. I think they probably setup temporary outdoor dining during COVID, but have taken all that down.

No outdoor seating even in the time of covid?

We had a seat outside before, but the landlord has instructed us to remove it. Sorry.

    Do they have outdoor dining?

    Sorry,We don’t have outdoor dining.

    Do they take reservation?

Last time I went about a month ago, they didn't, but I saw a big party there once who I assumed made reservations. Best bet is to call.

    Do they have curbside pickup?

Sorry I don't know but I'm sure you can call the restaurant. If you can it would taste so much better if you eat it there. Tempura needs to be crisp to taste the way it should. They have a nice outside patio and great service.

Do you still have the regular tempura bowl for 10+?

As of May 2026, I believe it's about $13 for the small bowl and nearly $20 for the large. I'm not sure of the servings as I always end up ordering something with their homemade udon noodles rather than rice.

How busy is this place on a weekday for lunch?

I came here twice during weekdays around noon. I got seated immediately both times

Today we decided to revisit the restaurant for old time's sake. Inside, the main wall was repainted with a new mural. Nonetheless, it retained its traditional izakaya décor with its counter seating alongside some regular tables. The staff were all new but still very courteous and brought the menu and water right away. New items were added but the core dishes remained the same. For this visit, we ordered our regular items and they arrived in 10 minutes: Eboshi Mini Trio with Shio Ramen, Fried Rice and Gyoza: The fried rice was still top notch, with slightly firm texture, not too oily, and pleasantly seasoned. The Shio Ramen with its clear broth was nicely savory. The thin noodles were cooked perfectly, and the chashu pieces were tender. To complement the set, the gyozas with their delicate wraps had nicely burnt bottoms, and flavorful fillings. Champon Ramen: A complex ramen with an assortment of meat, veggies and seafood. There were sliced pork pieces, shrimps, squids, cabbage, onions, snow peas and many more. The clear broth was quite savory and enriched by oil from sauteed ingredients. The noodles had a very nice texture and were a tad al dente. We were amazed that after all these years, the restaurant retained its original taste and flavor. We found out the reason why while exiting the restaurant: The young cook from two decades ago is now running the open kitchen as head chef. Great food and still reasonable prices. It was totally worth revisiting.

And then when I was done, I had to wait a while for the check and then they couldn't process the Apple Pay at the table so then I had to go to the front and wait for somebody to attend to me there overall this experience was not fun and stressful and I had got there right when they opened. I sure wish I had selected a different seat!! I wouldn't get the Nabeyaki soup again. It was really big and had a lot of end pieces of tough napa cabbage. There were two pieced of shitake mushroom and the standard thin fish cake slice. There was and egg in the soup and a three small chicken pieces. On the side were three small pieces of green bean and two tempura shrimp.
