They even have one of the six iterations of Munch's renowned painting, The Sick Child, depicting his sister Sophie's final moments before she succumbed to Tuberculosis. The massive piece of Jugendstil furniture in the room that features Munch's painting of Nietzsche is indescribably moving.

This time presenting the Swedish painter Sigrid Hjerte'n. An intelligent explosion in color and form covering her career and life. Every single work has an influence on me, as I move from one piece to another. Finally ending my visit with the part of the building, the old grand villa of the prince, where we find a few of the most valuable pieces of art in the history of Swedish painting. Then leaving this great museum. A short walk, entering the tram back home.

The guide book had suggested that there were some ornamental gardens and sculptures to be found on…read morethe pathway back towards the city from Biskopsvagen, but I was not prepared for quite how pretty a spot this turned out to be. The walks and trails are on several levels, so you need to keep an eye out to make sure which way you're going. When or if you see a "no cycling" sign, that means there'll be a dead end coming up, so keep that in mind. I wasn't inclined to visit the house itself, particularly as I was on a rental bike with no lock, but the outside areas presented more than enough for the eye to wallow in. There are some splendid sculptures in the gardens, as well as some amazing views across to Sodermalm and the channel as ocean liners came and went. It would have been very easy to spend at least an hour or more exploring this section of Djurgarden, but 30-45 minutes here is time very well spent too. A feast for the senses.

The museum itself is a little tough to find and can't be reached directly by the tunnelbana (subway/metro). It isn't helped by the fact that they like to make direct you to the museum with very post-modern signs that ENORMOUS arrows but the name of the museum in a tiny, almost illegible font. It's a spacious museum, and a somewhat strangely organized. The special exhibit was on the top floor, but the rest of the museum on the bottom floor. It's tough to explain, you'd have to go see it for yourself to understand. But it's not all that intuitive. But it is well lit which always critical for a modern museum. Another bonus is that it's directly connected to the Arkitekturmuseum which is awesome, since you can get a discounted rate when you buy a ticket for both.

It's designed more for kids, but this big old train and transit nerd enjoyed the museum too. It's…read morefully accessible, and great for letting little ones burn off energy while running, doing a little dress-up, pretending to be a train driver, etc. It has moved; it's now in the new red brick buildings in Drevergatan. It wasn't in any of my tour books; I think I just happened to see an advert for it in a Metro station. It's a bit of a schlep - from T-Centralen, I took the 14 to Tekniska hogskolan, then took the 6 bus to Drevergatan. A few minutes' walk brought me to the building, which is not on the street; you need to enter the complex of red brick buildings. There are four floors, although two are kind of half-floors. The suggestion is to start at the top, because it houses the history of transit. BTW, just after you start, just after the rowboat, there's a life-size horse model, and it whinnies. Scared the heck out of this poor kid who had wandered ahead a bit by himself. It's easy to see everything. You can go into some of the displayed vehicles to see what it's like. There's a little section with a movie for kids, and a kids' reading corner. WCs, including accessible ones, are on the 1st and 4th floors, towards the rear. There's a wee gift shop and cafe near the entrance, and a little kiddie train (no adults allowed). I'm glad I came on a weekday afternoon, as there were few others here.

It also has a short train ride to keep kids occupied along with pretend play areas. A block and a half away is a cute playground to keep the young ones entertained.

These ought to be good, as the rooms are large and air-conditioned, but on an ordinary September day they were hot and humid. There is no air conditioning, just an occasional fan. Air circulation is poor. All this is bade for both the gallery-goers and the works displayed. In addition, water colors were hung in bright light, always damaging to works on paper. These problems need to be solved, and soon.

(even though they hand you a list of all the stuffed species in there) One big diorama inside a wooden Viking house. You can view it from two different levels, and it goes all around the building. Apparently there was this guy from the nineteen hundreds, who shot all the animals (bird and mammals), and a famous painter did the trompe l'oeil background landscape. They kept it without electric light for some reason, so you can only see it when natural light comes in. Anyway, you don't really need more than a half-hour to see everything, which is just as well, as there is so much to do on Djurgarden anyway. Cute though-in a weird way.
