Our Contiki group came here as part of our tour and we were treated to a tour of the cellar, a brief discussion about the winery, and wine tasting complete with cheese pairing. They also offered olive oil tasting which was not to be missed. We tried the chianti and the chianti reserva (aged longer). Both wines were very nice and affordable. I opted to buy a bottle of chianti to bring back in my suitcase whereas others bought them to ship back home. One girl bought a few bottles to smuggle in her suitcase. You're allowed to bring back 2 bottles at the most so I don't suggest trying it but she managed 10. We also tried the vinsanto with almond biscotti. That's a dessert wine the monks used to use as 'medicine'. Nowadays, they serve it with biscotti to dip into while sipping it as a dessert wine. They also sell special bubble wrap in the shape of wine bottles to protect your new investments for 2,10 euro. Not too bad if you think the TSA will be rough with your luggage and most of the time that's true. The staff was very kind and they take US dollars as well as euros.

Fantastic place to eat in or to shop!…read more Volterra is a beautiful place. We came here on a weekday and there were some tourists, but it's far from being overcrowded. A great place to spend a few hours. Strolling around we got quite a bit hungry. Then we came across this place. And I remembered reading good reviews about it, so we went for it. It's a mix between a small restaurant (just a handful of tables in the back) and a butchery / deli shop. There's plenty of fresh cut meats to choose from (Salami, Ham, Sausages) and it also has a good range of sweets and cookies and lots of other products. There's a good selection of cheese also. Either eat-in other take-away (bring home). We took a seat in the back and ordered a plate of cut meats with Crostinis for just 10 Euro. And a small bottle of Prosecco for 7 Euro. The meat was really good. Presentation nice. Way above you average Salami and Ham. Nice spices and flavours. Besides the sweets they also sell lots of other special italian products. Olive Oil, Limoncello and other liquors and lots of truffle products (truffle honey, truffle spread with parmesan etc.), also chutneys, jam and much more. All really good stuff! We bought quite a bunch of their products to bring home and they taste fantastic. Service / staff was really great and helpful and took a lot of time explaining their products. And - quite unusual for this kinda place - our dog was welcome too. They even brought a huge bowl of water for her. A great great place. How many wonderful things can I saw about Valdonica?…read more Rooms- My husband and I slept comfortably in wonderfully plush blankets and pillows. Valdonica loves local and green- the walls are made of recycled wine barrels, all their foods and products are bought from local sellers, and everything is solar powered. Because we visited during off season, we stayed in one of the rooms of the main building (as opposed to the villas closer to the vineyards) and were the only ones there for the 2 nights we stayed. The main building houses the manager's office, kitchen, and winery in addition to the rooms. Manager- A wonderful man whose company my husband and I enjoyed very much during our stay! He is not just helpful and informative, we felt like we made a new friend (story-telling + tours + wine = new best friend, pretty much). We learned a lot about the winery, the local villages and nearby restaurants from him as well. Amenities- Free breakfast was delicious. I especially enjoyed the different jams and honey they make at Valdonica (they sell these there as well). Bathrooms include hair dryer, shampoo, body wash, soap, bathrobe, bath slippers, towels. I will note that the free wifi worked best in the kitchen/dining area and not as well in the bedroom but who needs wifi in the bedroom during your honeymoon....amiright? Winery&Vineyard- We hiked the trail that they have set out and enjoyed every minute of it. The view is breathtaking. Their vineyard produces some amazing wines. Our favorites were Mersino white and Saragio red. We loved our experience at Valdonica (and love is a strong word). We specifically came here to clear our heads and have a peaceful and relaxing finish to our honeymoon. We got that and more. Thanks Valdonica!
