Gross. I mean, really gross. My stepdad got a regular tuna roll that tasted VERY off. It was not fresh tuna. I ordered "the red lady," (pictured), and it was a terrible combination of flavors. Do not be adventurous if you find yourself already stuck at this location while you're reading this...Nothing could be done about the bill, and the waitress was quite rude. Especially considering both my stepdad and I only had one peace each from our plates. We truly sat there watching my husband eat his edible roll while we feasted on edamame, awaiting the inevitable pizza to come. In the past I have received everything from rancid avocado in my sushi to warm disgusting fish, burned meat, no sauce on the food and then ordered the sauce on the side and was charged for it. Today I ordered steak teriyaki rare and was given a burned piece of crap. ( this is not the fist time) When I went to return it the people there were unapologetic and beyond rude. This was my first time ordering from Tenzan. I have to say this is one of the most solid sushi spots on the upper west side where in my opinion, good sushi spots are lacking. I ordered the three maki lunch special and got a spicy tuna roll, spicy salmon roll, and a cucumber avocado roll with an included miso soup. They did not skimp on the fish at all! The rolls were filled to the brim with spicy tuna/salmon and the avocado was clearly fresh. A major plus was that they included more then enough ginger which if you are a ginger lover, is a rare find with any sushi spot. The picture attached explains it all with plenty of fish and plenty of ginger. Sorry I couldn't wait to dig right in! Poor service and bogus charges make this UWS establishment one to avoid. I've visited this location a dozen or more times in the five years I've lived in this neighborhood. Never have I been impressed with the quality of sushi or the service provided. Most recently, I asked our server to make a slight change to my order, which according to the menu's pricing, should've saved the restaurant money. When the bill arrived, I asked what the additional service fee was for and learned it was for making this small request. I was told "that's our policy, and was quickly dismissed". The prices at Tenzan are 20% higher than nearby sushi places to begin with, and you certainly aren't seeing that premium in the crummy atmosphere and flimsy furniture here. My recommendation is to walk two blocks north to Raku Sushi which has the BEST service and excellent sushi. read more

Opinions diverge on this place but I have to say, I'm a fan. The UWS is peppered with sushi restaurants so diners clearly have their choice in a very competitive space. We picked Tenzan for my dad's b-day and we were pretty satisfied with our experience. Our large party got a reservation easily and the table was ready when we arrived. The decor is modern and the restaurant is more spacious than most UWS sushi places. We started off with a bunch of appetizers: fried calamari (pretty good), avocado salad (decent) and yellowtail collars (tasted great but we got small collars so a bit of a rip). The entrees here are where the food shined. The chirashi had lots of fresh fish and pickles to go with a small portion of seasoned rice. The sushi and sashimi for 2 was really great, with large thick slices of fresh fish coupled with large nigiri and sushi rolls. Salmon teriyaki was well done with large portions. Katsu was also good. The portions here are extremely generous. The best thing however was the service. Our servers checked on us constantly, refilled drinks and helped us get the cake ready without any fuss. I was especially appreciative since we had lots of kids and they did everything without a hitch while keeping everyone happy. Big thumbs up. read more

In the past, I ordered sushi (avocado and cucumber rolls so nothing too complicated), my husband ordered his dishes and we always enjoyed our meals. However, after my experience the other day, much like the reviewers Dorthy, Adam, Darren Z and many others below, that patronage is ending for us as well (Darren Z had a similar experience - he ventured off the sushi menu and regretted it). The vegetable and tofu teriyaki I ordered was truly INEDIBLE (as in I had two bites - one without the sauce and then one with the sauce - and then it was in the garbage). The dish states on the menu that it is broiled and served "with sweet teriyaki sauce." One would assume that it would be prepared artfully and tastefully WITH the sauce in the preparation. When it arrived it was basically gigantic broiled pieces of vegetables with even more ENORMOUS chunks of tofu. The sauce was on the side. It looked like something you might feed a farm animal instead of something a quality restaurant in Manhattan would serve. I tasted a mushroom (pre-sauce) and I found it disgusting (please mind you, I am a vegetarian for many decades - I love vegetables and can only ever think of one vegetable dish I ordered from a restaurant in the past over 15 years ago that I found similarly inedible). I called the restaurant right away and I told them that the dish was inedible and I would like them to send over something else (it is not an inexpensive place - customers should be able to eat their meals). The first gentleman I spoke with apologized and assured me it would not be a problem and I put in a new order. Shortly thereafter, someone else called (the manager? the owner?) and told me that they would not honor what the other employee just told me about sending a new dish (he said over and over THAT WAS the dish, the sauce comes on the side and to just add the sauce - I knew that was not going to make a difference, but when I subsequently did, it was still equally inedible and ended up in the garbage as mentioned above). The owner's representation in its marketing that the restaurant is "committed to customer satisfaction" was the opposite of what I experienced. Instead of simply making a new dish, they lost a consistent customer. Now I need to find a new Japanese place! read more

Well the Tenzan on the east side has never failed at the bar. Just a thought. I guess it's time for some assertiveness. I ordered 3 items. The shumai came in no less than two minutes, so a plus here. But alas the only plus. Got frustrated waiting (10 minutes) for a sake refill, the Cali roll and salmon sashimi so asked for my check. The barkeep, being surprised, made a quick round trip to the sushi bar in under 30 seconds revealing the roll and sashimi. I took it to go. Sorry to say, it was not my day at Tenzan, or Tenzan's day with me. So took the order, and yes walked to another nearby sushi restaurant. The restaurant itself has bar seating if you want to watch TV, although the table height is a little awkward. There is table seating, and also chef bar seating. Same for the avocado roll. The cucumber roll wasn't rolled properly. The wrapper wasn't stuck together, so each bite fell open before even dipping in the soy. I asked for a different vegetarian roll that combined some of the ingredients already offered on the menu, but the restaurant doesn't accommodate special requests. I'm not sure if this was the waiter's opinion or the restaurant's position, but either way - I'm not a fan. We ate at 2:00 on a Thursday afternoon. We never had worse sushi before. We ordered combo of 6 rolls. They were served suspiciously fast to us, like there were prepared in advance. Three of the rolls - crunchy rolls were out of the same unidentifiable mushy substance even though there were supposed to be out of three different type of fish. They tasted just as they looked - bad. The salmon in other roll was spoiled and we returned it, asking substitute it for tuna. The tuna roll came as bad as everything else - the fish itself looked not fresh at all. And all the rolls were made so sloppy - like some apprentice without a clue was trying to make these rolls. We are worried now not to get poisoned or some terrible parasites. This place must be fined for serving such a horrible food. read more

So, everybody wanted sushi so we found this spot nearby my daughter's apartment on the Upper West Side. The service was good. The servers were quiet and subdued, but attentive, always coming by to fill a water glass. The food was just okay. I had crunchy maki, advertised as crunchy and spicy. Unfortunately, it was neither. It was however, a good value for the money. There was plenty of sushi at a reasonable price. Miso soup was standard fare. The shrimp tempura was just okay, as was the mango shrimp. The beef teriyaki, as well as the chicken Yaki Udon, were both found to be underseasoned. What I enjoyed most, was dining outside on the sidewalk as the weather was perfect. It was a real show viewing the constant parade of eccentric characters that make up the Upper West Side. In the future however, I will endeavor to search out a sushi place with a bit better quality of food read more

Great neighborhood sushi joint, very impressed just what I was looking for while I was wandering around starving. My girlfriend and I went in and we shared two different roles and they were both amazing. The place is really large has two separate sections on most and you can almost always find a seat. The staff was great and the service was as well and I would go back there again in a heartbeat. There are 1 million great sushi joints in New York City but a nice neighborhood one where you can get an interesting role with fresh seafood is always a treat to stumble on. read more

The day we were there they had a kitchen problem preventing us from ordering any hot food. Ok. No problem it's sushi then! Great menu , nice cocktails. We ordered the avacado salad. With ginger dressing ( couldn't taste the ginger ) do while fresh it lacked flavor. We also ordered tuna tataki. Maybe one of the saddest preparations I've seen in a Japanese restaurant I'm sorry to say. The fish tasted "old" it was not presented in an appealing way. As a result I had to send it back. Something I rarely do. The sushi however was just wonderful. Fresh, Beautifully presented and tasted great. When I got the bill I was surprised to see the tuna tataki still on the bill. I asked the waiter to tell the kitchen not to serve it as it truly didn't reflect the quality of the sushi. I will return, fir sushi only though. We love Tenzan. My wife and I have been coming to this location ever since they opened with a lovely cut-glass window and a much smaller overall space. Although the restaurant is much larger now, the service is still excellent and they still have the best sushi on the Upper West Side, IMHO. Some of the starters: If you like salmon skin rolls, and if you like salad, you must try the salmon skin salad. It's large, delicious, and a real bargain. This plus two rolls are plenty of food for me! The dressing has a bit of a kick, and I order it often. I frequently order the yellowtail vinaigrette. And the salmon tartar is delicious salmon chopped with a few crunchies and the same unique yummy dressing that comes on the salmon skin salad. The soups are great, the mango salad is very tasty. You should do well with any appetizer on the menu that sounds good to you! While most of the dishes I like are made with raw fish (not the salmon skin), there is plenty of wonderful food at Tenzan for those who prefer cooked specialties. My brother enjoys the beef negimaki and orders it every time we bring him here. The gyoza (Japanese dumplings) are very good, though a bit oily. My wife and I like the veggie gyoza the best, and the dumpling sauce is perfect. Tenzan on the Upper West Side is really a terrific neighborhood staple. If you're planning on dining here during peak hours, especially on the weekend, make a reservation. You may still wait for a table, but it won't be too long. I hope to see you here soon! read more

Between 3 of us, we tried the chicken tempura (juicy chicken- but huge serving that was impossible to finish), Teriyaki chicken (perfectly cooked) and the chicken udon - the noodles were so yummy. The food is fair...OK. The service is horrific. There doesn't seem to be any order or management in the restaurant. No hostess podium when you enter just a terminal hutch. Unless it's on a week end, you can sit yourself anywhere in the cafe if there are seats. No one sees you sitting there until someone happens to be servicing another table. The food takes a while and no one checks on you unless you're waving as if stranded on an island. Truth be told, they really couldn't care less about customers. They have "they'll come no matter what" syndrome. This has got to be the worst service, in a restaurant with over 75 seats, in the 10023 zip code. The bar is just as bad.
