Bait and Switch We bought a nice bottle of tequila here and the 'kind' owner swiftly took it behind the counter to wrap it up for us. Back in the hotel, we opened the wrapping to find he switched out the tequila for a cheaper bottle of the same shape that was absolutely not what we chose. We came back the next day and asked for the situation to be made right- with either a full refund (we brought the Tequila back unopened), a partial refund to match the value of the Tequila we now have, or to simply switch the bottles. He told us that we were liars and yelled as we left he shop. This is definitely a tequila shop aimed at tourists. However, that doesn't means that you can't have a good time. What it DOES mean is that you need to be smart and make sure that you're evaluating the situation properly. Fact #1. The tequila that they serve here is authentic and good. The way that you can tell is because shops that handle tequila are required by Mexican law to display a 100% Blue Agave lettering as well as an NOM (this is a license that the Mexican government gives to all tequila distillers, there is a unique numbering for ALL manufacturers, no exceptions). Fact #2. If you want to do a free tasting, there will be a price to be paid, that's just how Mexico works. Be prepared to buy a bottle when you come into a tequila tasting. If you don't want to purchase, then be prepared to tip. That's just how Mexico works unfortunately. That being said; Tequila Arrecife is high quality and very tasty. I do recommend it. Be careful to watch where the shop employees are pulling bottles from and always ask a lot of questions. Ask for pricing up front and ask what the pricing is in Pesos vs Dollars. Lastly, Mexico is a haggling country. ALWAYS haggle, no matter what. I know that it's a pain for some people, but if you haggle you will get the best price. This place was such a nice surprise! We stopped here on a whim after getting some pedicures down the street. A gentleman named Daniel offered us some free samples of some tequilas that I've never seen or heard of before, and also gave us some brief history/knowledge of its process. We went here because Vinos Americano did not have what we were looking for. The yelp reviews show this is a 5 star place, whereas Google reviews show this place is a tourist trap along the boardwalk. We thought we were getting a good deal with Ricardo. He verbally told us he was going to give us a good discount and was giving us the amounts in USD. When we were going to pay for it, we requested the total be in Pesos, since usually you get a better exchange rate if you pay in Pesos on a credit card with no foreign transaction fees. He calculated the total, and we trusted that he calculated it correctly. We did not get a receipt. After we had left the store, my girlfriend thought the total seemed a bit high based on the verbal prices he was telling us in USD. We went back to get an itemized receipt for the charge. It seemed like they were pulling numbers out of thin air to add up to our total. The price of some of the small bottles were double what he verbally told us (there was no price listed for those so we couldn't compare). He told us this was due to "taxes." Another 2 bottles were outright more expensive than the display price (he told us $35 but the display price said $32). So he gave us $6 back for those. However before we had bought it he verbally told us $25... but now he was saying he only give us a discount on the big bottles. It seemed like he made a mistake in calculating the totals and did not want to admit it after he had already taken our money. We made the mistake to trust the salesman, when we should have been calculating the totals ourselves and guaranteed the discount he promised to give us. I come here every year to buy Arrecife Anejo for my friend back home in California. She loves this Tequila and won't drink anything else.
