Our go-to for a quick, no-fuss meal out with the kids when we want something better than fast food. A few years ago, they remodeled this Columbia location into an order-at-the-counter setup, and it does make it easy when we want to get in and out quickly, or if we want to meet up with friends, order separately, and find a seat. Very friendly staff and always patient and understanding with my kids when they have special requests. The food is good. Guacamole is fresh, and they have all of the dishes and combos you would expect to see. Good margaritas by the glass or pitcher and all the chips. (I think the rice is one of the saltier things on the menu - I'm thirsty in the middle of the night if I order it...) For something different, try the torta sandwich! My daughter and I came here a few weeks ago and everything was delicious. We didn't know what to expect, as we had never been to a walk up Mexican restaurant like this. The steak street tacos and queso were perfection. My daughter who is picky loved her meal as well. While staff didn't seem thrilled to be there at all, I won't take off a star because of how much we liked the food, and the fact that they came to clean everything up for us right when wewere done. You order at the counter, tip before your order, and they bring the food out to you. Read below, but this is basically a stepped up Taco Bell--fast food Mexican. For our dishes--the meat in our tacos was cold. Due to our orders coming out in less than 2 minutes, our guess is they pre-cook the food and keep it in a holding table that is probably not keeping the warm items to temp. The tortillas in the tacos broke down when you picked them up (due to being soggy). I think this is why real Mexican places usually use two tortillas for each street tacos (I've never seen only one, perhaps a cost saving measure?). Again, the rice and beans for our dishes came out on plates that were as hot as the sun, however the rice and beans were very cold. My guess is their plate warmer works great, but there holding table isn't at temp. Due to the issue with the food temps I am worried about their food holding procedures. We are so glad they are close by. The new renovation is very nice. They've changed things around since we were there last. Now you order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. The guacamole was made fresh, salsa is fantastic, chips were warm. Service was very fast. It wasn't too busy when we were there, so it might get crazy later and on weekends. We were glad to see they have their "Lent" menu available year round. Their fish (grilled or fried) is excellent. I ordered Pollo Jalisco with black beans instead of rice. It comes with grilled veg, and is so good! I think it's probably one of the lowest fat and calorie choices on their menu. Their lunch specials are available from 11-2. We'll be back! read more

So I ended up on a business trip to St. Louis on Cinco de Mayo and was dropped off at the hotel with no car. Lucky me - there was a Mexican restaurant in the plaza across the street and I am assuming it is the only Mexican place within 50 miles as there were crowds of people outside, an hour minimum wait for a table and you couldn't even see the bar in the corner inside. I had wanted a margarita to enjoy while waiting for my carryout but that definitely wasn't going to happen. It is VERY loud inside - music mostly but the people played a hand in it. I liked it before the remodel, but it has a whole new look and feel. Bright and hopping! Order made at front counter and paid for there. Line was out to the door tonight, orders taken quickly and brought out so fast. I had a shredded beef chimi plate and it was so good!!! Husband had nachos tequila and it had beef and shredded chicken on it, and probably a whole chicken breast worth! You are served chips and salsa almost before you sit down. Very friendly and efficient staff. I believe they are opening a location in south county and I can't wait! I hope it's the same model. Only have one suggestion: tomato slices are awkward, chopped would be more easily eaten. Always seemed strange getting the slice! Will be back soon!!! read more

Basing my 4 stars on their margaritas more than their food. Their food isn't bad but just same ole Mexican fare. I like to get to Guadalajara special which is chicken-and shrimp combo with side of Chihuahua cheese. Food arrives quickly. They are very good about serving plenty of chips and salsa. As I mentioned their margaritas are pretty darn good. I usually get mine on the rocks however I tasted my brothers frozen margarita- wow was it strong. Not sure all the frozen margaritas are that strong or there was a little extra in his pitcher. They also let us a bring a cake in so that was nice. read more

I may just be spoiled by the Mexican food in my part of Michigan, but this restaurant wasn't up to par. I like my tacos street style, double layered corn Tortilla, meat, white onion, cilantro. After I asked for this, I was given a single tortilla, a bushel of cilantro, and a few pieces of white onion. The meat itself was fine, but the bushel of cilantro made it hard to taste anything else. A small thing, but the cheque was presented, to me. I get it that old times dictate that the man pays on a date, so this didn't bother me. But after my girlfriend put her card to be used, the recipet was presented to me once more. A small thing, yes. But still a thing. I'm involved with a group of cyclist who frequently trains on the beautiful roads in the Columbia, IL area. We always meet in the parking lot before any of the stores in this area are open, but for the last few years we've made it a point to have our post ride recovery meals at Tequilas. The food is excellent and affordable, the margaritas are delicious, and the staff is always accommodating, even to a group of sweaty riders who may or may not smell so fresh. You either get average service or non-existent service. The margaritas are "meh" at best; nothing special. Kid friendly as the dining room is typically pretty loud. No bar area.
