The cemetery is located in the ghost town of Terlingua and has been in existence since 1902. The cemetery sits on about an acre or so of dry, dirty, and dusty land. Graves are decorated with everything from trinkets to beer bottles. Though located in a ghost town, the cemetery is still actively used for burials. There's an annual Day of the Dead ceremony. Makes for great photo ops. Once of my favorite desert places to visit. If you're in the Big Bend area, this is absolutely a must-see. read more

Amazing historical site . This small cemetery was originally part of the grounds for the St. Agnes Church. The cemetery served the mining community of Terlingua and graves as early as 1903 are here. Instead of fancy tombstones and monuments, the graves here are marked with grottoes, filigree crosses, folkart, and other decorations, many handmade by family artisans. While most of the graves here are old, there are some more contemporary ones too that seem to bridge fates between the past and present. Many of the graves, old and new, are still tended to diligently. There are relics left by many a friend and family members. Some graves have lawn chairs by them where loved ones have come for more lengthy visits. I know a cemetery may not be your highest item on your travel agenda, but this one really is a must-see. read more

A still active cemetery in Terlingua Ghost Town. Mostly mexican-americans buried there starting from 1902. Some elaborate tombstones, some rustic, and some modern. There's a variety to look at. You can tell that many are still visited today by loved ones, who leave mementos, memorabilia and trinkets behind. read more

Hands down a must visit if you're staying in one of the many airbnbs or rentals/leased homes in the area while you're visiting Big Bend or doing some river tours. Read the signs carefully, walk the graveyard, what an experience! Wasn't prepared for what I saw. Very highly recommended. See the pictures I posted for more. Requiem in Pacem This cemetery serves Terlingua. People have been living here for a long time, and this cemetery serves them well. Some of the graves date back to antebellum times. This used to be a mining community, and you can see the historic ghost town right next to the cemetery. It's a wild walk to do both. A lot of the graves are so old, but they're kept up well. You can still read the inscriptions on the headstones, and someone is coming out here to keep things picked up and orderly. Many of the graves are rather recent. It's neat that people come out and decorate the graves, presumably often for Dia de los Muertos. Some of the graves were completely covered in beer bottles. Not in a disrespectful way, but where you could tell everyone got together and had a few cold ones while remembering the deceased. There was plenty of parking along the roadside, and we parked down by the ghost town before entering the cemetery. It's a peaceful place, where the personalities of the dead were nicely shown in the design of their eternal resting place. It's a cool scene right out of a spaghetti western to see this place.
