I'm not usually someone to post something like this, but I'm extremely angry. Last Sunday, Kyle and I went to the Terre Haute Humane Society and wanted to adopt a dog. First off, we wanted to adopt an older/adult dog (not a puppy) because we know there are so many that have likely been there for a long time, while puppies seem to go in and out pretty quickly because everyone wants a puppy. After asking to see 4-5 different adult dogs and not seeing a single one of them, the staff steered us in the direction of a puppy. It really seemed like they did not want to show us any of the adult dogs. They had a few litters of puppies, and mentioned 2 chiweenie puppies. Kyle has been wanting a weiner dog so we asked to see those two. They brought them both out to us and we fell in love with them! We decided we would apply to adopt one of them (I'm only allowed to have one pet living on campus). We hung out with the puppies and held them for about a half hour, and then filed an application to adopt. While we were hanging around in the lobby with the puppies, a couple came in to pick up a cat they were set to adopt, and a staff member told them that the cat was gone because another family had come and adopted it between the time they applied and Sunday when they had an appointment to pick it up. The couple was completely blindsided by this and was really upset, but went ahead and picked out a different cat. This should have been a red flag to us, looking back. So anyways, we file our application and we were told that they would call us on Tuesday to let us know if we were approved. We were so excited, as soon as we left we went straight to pet smart and looked at the prices on beds, food, puppy pads, harnesses and leashes, toys, etc. to prepare for if we were approved. Well, Tuesday comes and goes and we heard nothing. Wednesday at lunch we still hadn't heard anything, so I called and left a voicemail. The same thing happened on Thursday. Yesterday was pretty crazy for me so it totally slipped my mind to check in on Friday. So, today Kyle drives out to the shelter and when he walked in, the staff member literally said to him, "What do you want?" Kyle explained why he was there, he hadn't heard back after leaving messages, and the staff member said "Uh nope. Not the chiweenies. They're gone." Kyle asked what they meant and they told him that a family had come and adopted both of them this week. They first of all never contacted us to even let us know if we were approved, let alone to inform us that the dog we wanted was gone. We were very excited for this puppy, so of course we're a little sad about it not working out and we can only hope both of them went to a good home, but I'm extremely angry from the lack of communication and professionalism from the staff at the Terre Haute Humane Society. I'm really sad too because I have always been an "adopt, don't shop" type of person which is why we went the route of adopting through a local shelter. However, I don't think Kyle and I will ever support them in the future, which hurts because we know that each and every animal in that shelter deserves better, happier, fuller lives. But this is already the second time in the span of one week that I've witnessed/experiencing this happening. I'm not here to tell you not to adopt from them, because those animals need good homes, but please don't get attached to a specific animal or expect any kind of communication or professionalism from them, or you will be let down. read more

These reviews are infuriating!!! From the several hurdles you need to jump before adopting to the unprofessional and disrespectful staff. Shut this place down and give the animals to other adoption agencies to handle. You're playing with peoples family and emotions and you deserve all that happens to you! read more

This woman's story on Facebook. I had to share. Shut this place down immediately. To the Terre Haute Humane Society, I understand that not every single animal brought to you can be saved. But, when you OFFER to help and ask someone to foster that animal I do feel like you owe it to that person to inform them of its well being and discuss next best options. I brought "Fleur" the rescue cat to you in good faith DESPITE the multiple negative comments saying "you won't hear back from them" and other slander about your organization because I wanted her to get help quickly! To my pleasant surprise you gave me medicine, I brought her home, kept her comfortable, warm, feed and she continued to improve. Cue the very swollen Paw. Over the weekend Fleurs paw started to swell. I made the THHS aware on Monday and they asked that I bring her in, so I did. By their request and no surprise to me they asked to keep her, I assumed to treat her. They said I'd hear from them in a few days. Tuesday, nothing. Wednesday, left a message and nothing. Thursday, called and nothing. Friday, left a message and finally receive a call back. THHS: Hello this is THHS They asked I call and tell you that she was put down. Me: umm What!!!? Why!? THHS: "Her foot was three times the size it should've been, she was making an awful meow and she lost her appetite. She was in pain and declining." Me: Okay, well I was fostering her don't you think you should have let me know? Or given me the option to get her to a vet? Honestly ... idk what was said after that I was in complete shock and disbelief I do remember the lady saying "You were fostering her for us?" Like it was a question. Point is. I brought this cat to THHS thinking they would give it the help that it needed. If you weren't going to offer her that then you shouldn't have accepted her or should have referred us elsewhere. I was trying to act as quickly as possible to get this cat what she needed and I trusted you to do just that! I would have NEVER left her with you had I known she was going to be euthanized! My dog has terminal cancer for goodness sake and putting him down wasn't even an option for me!!!! I had two separate people offering to pay for this cats vetting bills once they learned of her problems but she never got that opportunity! All they had to do was call me back and I could have taken her! I trusted that THHS would do right by this cat and they certainly did not! Sure, maybe the THHS is full and busy and it's expense to run and the list goes on but it's what you do, it's your business! I'm sure they have done right by other but this really has me thinking.. Terrible place!!!! I will never darken their doorsteps EVER AGAIN! We went to the Teere Haute Humane society several months ago to adopt a Great Pyrenees. We get there and they say since she is over 60lbs their vet won't spay her and she can't go home until she is fixed but luckily enough there is another vet on staff but is on vacation, and when she returns she'll do they spay. Within 24hrs they sold the dog out from under us, NOT FIXED but we couldnt take her unfixed even though I said we will take her to my vet and get it done. Fast forward several months. We find another dog we wanted. There Several emails back and phone calls. We come down from Indianapolis (an hour and a half drive one way) At NO TIME DID THEY EVER SAY SHE IS BONDED. Her profile does not say she is bonded! As soon as we walk in the door I stated my name and which dog we came to see. One lady said "There is nothing on the books. No appointments were written down" I said I'll show you the email correspondences. Game changed and a 2nd older woman said "SHE IS BONDED AND THERE IS NO WAY U CAN HAVE HER WITHOUT THE OTHER. I CAN HAND YOU THE COMPUTER AND YOU CAN LOOK FPR ANOTHER DOG." My boyfriend and I said "no were done". I said "that's strike 2 with this place and now I'm done" The older lady said "were sorry but u can not take her without the other dog" I said "with ALL the communication between us, at no time did u say this. You are not sorry, not at all". The only reason I give this corrupt humane society 1 star is ONLY because it will not let me post this review without leaving a star. read more

My family got a dog from here in July. The dog ended up eating our cat. Nobodies fault that just happens sometimes. He would get in the cats face sometimes, the cat didn't like it and swatted him away. When we got the dog's his nails were long, and he was gnawing his paws off due to an allergic reaction from the food they gave him. My daughter and I visited the dog to say goodbye. Some kid came in there with the dog on the leash asking us what happened. He kept the conversation going, trying to justify to us why it was okay that he killed our cat (one I just cleaned up off the floor, wiped up it's blood and body parts as my wife and daughter cried next door. They made my wife feel guilty for returning him. If I'm saying goodbye to my dog some kid should not be in the room asking me questions. I shouldn't have some kid trying to convince mea 3lbs cat abused a 60 lbs. pit and that's why it's all okay. Shut up, let me play w my dog, then we leave. I would not recommend this place. The place is trash. They tried telling my wife and I that there were cat scratches on him. If you were a cat getting eaten, would you scratch the thing eating you? I didn't go there to talk about what happened. I went there to say goodbye. My last chance to say goodbye was tainted. Don't go there. Go to Sullivan County. read more

My one experience attempting to adopt here was discouraging. The staff behind the counter was inattentive and unhelpful, my husband and I having to repeatedly call out for acknowledgement as the employees laughed and joked among themselves. After finding the dog right for us we were prepared to adopt and take him home, but to no avail. The woman handling our paperwork said that after contacting our landlord and realizing we hadn't paid the pet deposit (that we didn't realize we needed to pay) that she was technically not allowed to release the animal to us until a receipt of payment. She then lowered her voice, checked to see if anyone else was in the office and offered to look the other way and just give us the animal. We left. Literally the only thing this shelter had going in its favor was a clean facility. Poor staff with questionable morales completely and unnecessarily drug the adoption process through the dirt, making a mockery of their work and ultimately wasting our time. We will not be returning, nor will we be recommending adoptions from the facility to friends or family. Hugely disappointing. read more

We have adopted 2 cats from the shelter and are very happy with them, they are family. Our first cat was just a kitten she is now 5. She is our Diva. We adopted Beau right after we lost our Siamese Loreli. Our hearts were broken and we decided to adopt a senior cat in her honor. Beau is and we have had for a year. We think he had been abused. He had teeth missing and was declawed. He is very skittish, he's coming. I will never buy an animal because there are so many cats and dogs who need a loving home. If my husband would agree I would more cats and a dog or two. The problem last year with the shelter being out of caused was caused something contagious and all their had to be euthanized. I tried adopting from the THHS 1 1/2 yrs ago. I called and went over several times .not one person there knew anything about the dogs. Staff could have cared less. Dogs had wrong names on kennels . What a mess!!! I also took supplies over there, not one person would help me unload the supplies. I went to Sullivan Co. shelter and adopted. Wow is all I can say!!! read more
