On the outside, this unassuming pharmacy looks like any other under the Malouf banner group. But…read morethis pharmacy is my hero having saved me many times from spending an uncomfortable night waiting in the emergency room. You know how sometimes you get sick in the middle of the night but it's not life threatening so you'll get triaged to the bottom of the emergency pile. If you're lucky, sometimes the pharmacy will have the medication you need allowing you to bypass emergency. This is why I appreciate Malouf pharmacy in Mt Gravatt so much. After Terry White at Coorparoo, this is probably the latest opening pharmacy on the south side of Brisbane. It shuts at 9:30pm six nights out of seven and opens public holidays. There's also a bulk billing doctor surgery next door and a QML pathology in the same shopping complex. It usually has decent gift lines but honestly, where there's such a hardworking health team, not having a make-up counter or cheap perfumes isn't a deal breaker.

For instance, just the other day I ran out of my prescription medication and couldn't get into the medical centre. My regular pharmacy was able to contact my doctor, organise all the paperwork and provide an emergency supply over the weekend. Healthy World Pharmacy in Mount Gravatt is my pharmacy of choice for its friendly staff, convenience AND huge range of cosmetics. I'm not kidding. They have a huge range of cheap cosmetics. I remember their original pharmacy in Stones Corner use to be known as make-up and perfume specialists. Well, they've brought the same range to their Mt Gravatt shop. It's great browsing through their discounted Loreal, Maybelline and Elizabeht Arden lines while waiting for my prescription. For those more into their health than make-up, Healthyworld also offer a full time naturopath and specialise in sports/ body building and nutritional supplements. Their downstairs location is directly next to a bulk billing medical centre with both male and female doctors. So for those people living in the Mt Gravatt area, taking care of your health is now quick, affordable and convenient.

Unfortunately, having shopped here a couple of times, their prescription service is not very effective. They have this system where customers go to the back of the store to get their scripts filled or purchase over-the-counter medications. Once your script is filled, you take it to the front of the shop for payment. I think they have set up this system to make a clear distinction between the health care component and the general shop. At the back of the store, you can get pharmacist counselling and pick up prescriptions. However, money exchanges hands at the front of the shop. It sounds good in theory except when you just want to buy $1 tissues but you're stuck behind a pensioner who forgot to hand in his pension card and therefore his prescription had gone through at full price. The poor sales assistant had to run to the back of the shop with the pension card, the pharmacist had to re-process the script, the sales assistant had to come back, then the pharmacist realised he also had to re-process the repeat prescription, the pensioner had to hand over the prescription again. The entire process took five minutes longer than it should. Needless to say, the line of people waiting to get served was pretty restless. So while this may be a convenient pick up point for toiletry, think twice before going in if you're in a rush.

They do have generic brands available for some medications and also offer a tablet fill service, where the daily tablets go into special trays for ease of taking.

This is a nice quiet pharmacy, unlike some of the busier ones you find in shopping centres. The best part about this is that it allows the staff to really discuss your medication and what is best for you. You get given the time of day here. They make sure you know what you are taking, the side effects to watch out for. They ask about your general health and I always feel very confident when I leave. The pharmacy itslef has only a small selection of other goods (such as shampoo etc) compared to others but the service with prescriptions is extremely good.

There is always a bargain bin near the entrance selling a variety of random and cheap goods--from brand new Garnier products to mug gift packs left over from Christmas. The layout of this store makes browsing very discreet if you're after 'personal products' like condoms and sanitary products. There are two sections for customers to browse through, and there's an ample range of products, from tiger balm, to instant breath fresheners. My brother dropped by to pick up some Zovirax and the pharmacist was incredibly friendly and even inspected his cold sore to check if she was prescribing the right thing for him. She even gave him extra tips on how to care for the sore itself, and how to apply the cream for optimum healing. We left feeling assured that that cold sore of his was history.

I was an impoverished student in Paddington for about a year and I learnt a lot about being thrifty in this time. Imbedded into my routine was procuring my many beauty products from Paddington Central Pharmacy. I don't think this pharmacy actually advertises itself as a "discount" pharmacy but there is still many savings to be had! Namely on basic things like shampoo, conditions and toothpaste! On a good day one would be able to purchase a large amount of toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner for around $10. This would generally last me about a month. Not a bad deal to stay clean and reasonably attractive for approximately $10 a month! I also went through a health kick and picked up some relatively cheap vitamins but they didn't send me into a bargain bonanza! So in short, this review is for all those poor students out there who need a cheap solution to staying clean!

People waiting for scripts can also pass time by browsing through Brookside Shopping Centre, the home of this Terry White Chemist. Generally I haven't had to wait on scripts for too long here, however, despite the fact that it seems to be always bustling with customers. However there are enough pharmacists and stuff employed at the chemist to make sure that everyone pretty much has their needs served to as soon as they approach the counter. It's a well-oiled machine, and you can tell. I also found the staff here to be very friendly in a genuine way. (The sort of people that foreigners appreciate and return home saying, "Australians are so NICE. Even the people working in shops are nice to you.") This level of high respect and friendliness is at odds with some of Brisbane's pharmacies where you feel like you're getting the third degree for asking to purchase nasal decongestant or cold and flu tablets. I understand that pharmacists can ask these questions, but there's asking and then there's the third-degree. All in all this is quite a gem of a pharmacy, including a wide range of household staples such as dental care products (I love my White Glo toothbrush and toothpaste pack) at prices below the chemist average.

I have been to this pharmacy once before when in south bank so I knew that I would get the help I needed. Last time it was for a simple thing but this time I figured if they knew what they were on about last time, they'll know how to help now. Its not really that often that something like a chemist is exciting or worth really talking about…read more I do make one exception to this rule however and that is for the Chemist Warehouse in Mt Gravatt. I cant see why people would go to any other chemist or well being shop to be honest. Everything that i have found is cheaper at Chemist Warehouse and they have deals all the time. I picked up a whole box of paracetamol for 1 dollar and Colgate tooth paste for 2 dollars. Apart from the basics and the toiletries they also have a huge range of supplements and dietary products that are all cheaper than at the usual retail outlets. They also have a pretty big perfume section that is again been discounted quite dramatically. They do have nights where things that are already cheap are discounted by a further 10 percent and even serve light snacks and beverages on these nights. I think another reason why i like Chemist Warehouse is the fact that it proves that medication and supplements do not need to cost an arm and a leg.
