These are but some of the images evoked by holidays by the beach and this is usually the state I find myself in whenever visiting this Londis. Its is in the small seaside village of Fethard on Sea and is one of those typical local medium sized supermarkets that for its size is surprisingly well stocked. They've a large baking section, a frozen food area, a respectable veg selection, although it can vary depending on delivery days, a home goods area, and all the bits and bobs you might find yourself without if you were staying on one of the many campsites or holiday homes nearby. They also have a sweet and ice cream section which are what sugar addicted kids dreams are made of. It's maybe a little expensive for some items, but that's to be expected when they are the only option for miles, but they are handy in a pinch and are reasonably priced for the basics. I also LOVE that they stock a good amount of local produce which they clearly label as such; eggs, bacon, milk, honey, yoghurt, great brown bread, all from nearby in Wexford, there are even salad bags in the summer from a local woman's garden.  One thing that was surprising to me is that they don't have fresh fish caught locally, perhaps there's no demand, but it's a shame. Instead there's a guy who comes by early on Saturday mornings with a van that parks at the side of the shop from whom you can buy the local catch. All in all a grand little spot with friendly staff that I'm a regular at when in the sunny south east.

The service was fast and friendly. The ambience is sort of reminiscent of Birkenstocks and granola. My wife says Stable Diet is "charming." Fabulous lunch with fresh ingredients. This is the opposite of the super processed, fast food available in restaurants up and down Main Street. Made to order sandwiches, quiche, soup, etc. Artisan bread. We stumbled on Stable Diet and walked in because it looked familiar and comfortable, probably because in my jetlag I kept misreading the name as "Staple Deli." We got two americanos, a scone, and a "zesty" chicken focaccia. The coffee dispelled any myths we heard about Ireland's relationship to coffee. The "zesty" chicken was more coated in a sweet barbeque sauce, but it was fine and heathful. But it was the scone that gave us life. I've never had a "cream tea" before, never even had clotted cream. But this scone was perfectly warm and soft, served with the cream and jam. And after 19 hours of travel, it was so comforting I couldn't stand it. Yule Organic is based at Penylan Farm in Dingestow, Monmouth, and is for me at least, what living in Wales is all about! They supply, 'freezer packs' of well-hung organic lamb and Aberdeen Angus beef to order, as well as producing the finest lamb rugs from their organic lambs. These are also organically tanned. Golden Lamb Rugs are essentially fleeces that are 'lovingly produced' from organically reared lambs that are biodynamically tanned locally to the highest levels of professionalism. Their website offers a boon of information, featuring all the good reasons to go organic... here's one of them: "On average, organic food contains higher levels of vitamin C and essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and chromium as well as cancer-fighting antioxidants." And here's another: "Organic food doesn't contain food additives which can cause health problems such as heart disease, osteoporosis, migraines and hyperactivity. Amongst the additives banned by the Soil Association are hydrogenated fat, aspartame (artificial sweetener) and monosodium glutamate." And one more for luck: "Over 400 chemical pesticides are routinely used in conventional farming and residues are often present in non-organic food. The UK government has recently found high levels of pesticide residues in baby food, spinach, dried fruit, bread, apples, celery, and chips." During my recent trip to Ireland, one of my missions was to find an Irish pub with the name Furlong and it didn't take me long once in Enniscorthy to find Patrick Furlong's place. Patrick has got to be 95 years old but he still runs this VERY quaint and sadly run-down nick-nac shop which doubles as an Irish Pub. Patrick was the nicest guy and was genuinely interested in the story of how my family had emigrated to Chicago in the 1870's. Many of his own family had gone to Australia during the potato famine. I had brought my daughter with me and we spent a good 2 hours with him, drinking a few Guinness, and hearing all about his family, business, and life. It was really fabulous to meet him and was one of my favorite moments during my 2-week trip. Visit Patrick if you happen to be in Enniscorthy and check his place out. You probably won't find any treasures in his wares but you will see a genuine old-style irish pub and meet a really classy guy.
