I have never seen him that calm with any vet or groomer attending to him before! He has such bad separation anxiety that we have been turned away by groomers before. But at Tesslan his nail trim went very smoothly with no signs of stress both during and after his time there. His nails have been a huge stress for us and we will be returning in hopes to shorten his quick time a normal length. They truly take their time to care for your dog even as far as to watch for signs of stress in their body language, aromatherapy formulated for dogs, and multiple employees at his side. read more

My dog hates nail trims and screams if I so much as look at him with a nail clipper. I brought him here and he was calm for the trim and they had it done very quickly. I've been taking my two dogs to Tesslan about two to three times per year for the last two years. I was planning on leaving them a long overdue and deserved positive review after picking up my pups today from their grooming appointment. Sadly, this will be my last visit to Tesslan Dog Spa. I've always felt their pricing was a bit steep, but I gladly paid their prices and a 20% tip every time I visited, because they did a great job with my dogs. As soon as I walked through their door today to drop off the dogs for their 1:30pm appointment, I was hit with an overwhelming wave of heat and humidity, that I've never before experienced at their salon. It reminded of Florida in midsummer with no beach or AC nearby. I was a little worried about the safety of my dogs in such a hot, humid place with no ventilation. But I let my previous positive experiences with Tesslan comfort me and tried not to worry about it. Tess was distracted and didn't greet me as she normally has in the past. She also failed to recognize that my dogs and I had ever been there before in the first place. I thought maybe she was having an off day, and having worked in customer service my entire life I gave her a break and didn't take it personally. Before I left, I asked Tess about how long she thought the dogs would take, and she told me that the groomer would call me to let me know when they were ready. Having been through this before without issue, I didn't press her further. I spoke with the groomer about what type of cut I wanted for the pups and decided I might as well ask the groomer for a time estimate on when they thought the dogs would be done. The groomer repeated the "we'll call you when they're ready" response I got from Tess. OK. I thought nothing of it, because in the past I would drop off my dogs as early as 11am and Tesslan would be so busy that I wouldn't get a call about the dogs until just before close. Other than those previous experiences, I had no frame of reference for how long I could expect the grooming to take, so I went about my workday mostly worry free. I got a call at 2:35pm, only about an hour after I had dropped off the dogs, and the groomer said that they would be ready at 3:20pm. I thought "Great! Tesslan wasn't as busy today. That's the fastest they've ever groomed!". I let my husband know, so he could go pick them up while I was working. 3:55pm rolls around, and my husband hasn't made it to pickup the dogs yet (traffic of course; story of our lives in this area). At this time, Tess leaves a voicemail saying that because I missed the 3:20pm pickup time that I was only informed of less than an hour prior to her voicemail, that I would have to pay a $40 late fee. Had I been made aware of this new policy verbally either when I dropped off the dogs or (better yet) when I made their appointment, I might understand. Or, if she had told me an actual grooming pickup time estimate window when I asked both her and the groomer today, then I would also understand the late fee. Insisting that your customers allow your groomers the flexibility of "we'll call you when they're ready" while refusing to extend the arbitrary pickup time for the customer by just 30 minutes in an area like this (which is chronically plagued with terrible traffic problems) is absolutely ridiculous. Today was the first time I didn't leave a tip (to make up for the late fee), and it will be the last time I'll ever pay Tesslan Dog Spa again. I hope that this new and very poorly implemented late fee policy was worth losing a loyal customer. read more

I had a bad experience with Tesslan today. When I got Shadow home I noticed that she had some red marks in her armpit. I figured it was just a little razor burn (not totally uncommon), but I was a little upset to see it since Tess advertises herself as a totally low-stress handler, with ultra gentle techniques. Shadow's last 2 appointments didn't leave any marks, and she'd seemed just fine. Out of curiosity, I looked more closely at her chest, belly and back legs and was alarmed to see that one of her nipples had been nicked and was bleeding, and she had several more red abrasions or burns of some kind on areas of her belly and hind legs. I took pictures and called Tess to tell her what had happened. Tess was very disbelieving and defensive about the possibility the marks could've come from her shop. She said if Shadow "did indeed have any nicks or cuts," she'd help me treat them with colloidal silver so they wouldn't be an issue. Fortunately, I had time to bring Shadow right back in, whereupon Tess examined her belly, used her finger to rub the blood off Shadow's nipple, and began saying (something very much like), "I don't think this is from grooming. I think it's something else. You need to take her to a vet to be sure, but I don't think this is from the razor. These spots don't look anything like razor burn or issues from grooming." I told her that if she felt that sure it wasn't her shop's fault, I'd post my pictures on Yelp and let potential customers decide if they wanted their dogs to look like that when they picked them up. She immediately became more concessionary, and said how much she loves her clients (her babies she calls them), and would never want an owner to be upset. But she maintained that only a vet could tell her if the marks were from grooming or whether "something else" was wrong with the dog. I told her I'd go to her vet that moment if she set it up and paid for it. She did just that, with Cat & Dog Clinic, and the vet fit me in within 10 minutes. The vet examined Shadow and said that while she couldn't absolutely say for sure they were from grooming (which of course is true, since she wasn't present when the grooming was happening), the marks were from an injury, not any kind of skin condition, and looked to have happened recently. Shadow's nipple was cut and would need some antibiotic ointment. The red marks, she thought, may have come from very hot clippers against her skin if indeed grooming was the cause. She said she'd call the groomer to tell her her opinion, and suggest she may want to supervise the employee who had groomed Shadow more closely. Then the doc proceeded to tell me some true horror stories she's seen after grooming visits. I felt thankful Shadow's injuries weren't serious, but avoiding trauma like that is the reason I chose Tesslan, and why I pay their prices and sometimes wait 7 weeks to get in to see them. The vet said several of their staff take their pets there because of her claim of low-stress handling. I agreed that my prior visits had all been fine and this seemed unusual. I called Tess to tell her what the vet had said. I told her more than anything I was upset that she wanted to try and disclaim responsibility for Shadow's condition. Tess said she was sorry, she'd really watch this new staff member carefully, and vented a bit about how hard it is to find people to work in the way she wants them to. She said she'd grown to over 700 clients and couldn't handle all the work herself. She was having to hire "experienced" groomers and several of her recent ones hadn't worked out. I asked her to refund my grooming fee and she said she would, all the while assuring me she has integrity and love for her clients and wants the best for everyone. I was feeling appeased and forgiving. She suggested I stop back by for my refund, which I did about 10 minutes later. By the time I got there, the vet had called. Suddenly, Tess' tone had changed. She said the Vet told her she "couldn't be absolutely sure" the marks were from grooming. She used the Vet's caveat (of not having been present to witness the injury) to suggest once again that there was doubt that the marks were caused by them. Further, she suggested I go elsewhere in the future for Shadow's grooming needs so I could find someone who could handle her the way I preferred (i.e. not burning and cutting her). When she saw I was upset, she said I could have just HER groom Shadow, but she was overbooked already with aggressive or higher-need dogs and my wait would be long. Now I was angry. I felt I'd been reasonable. I hadn't rushed to smear her on Yelp, or demanded my money back without being willing to jump through her hoops (including seeing the vet she insisted upon)... I just wanted her to know her staff was injuring dogs (which is something I'd want to know as a business owner), and for her to take responsibility. I checked out some other doggy day-cares but they were overrun with dogs barking constantly and that wasn't what I wanted for my dog. She was with 2 or three other dogs in a very pleasant atmosphere. They were grooming 3 or 4 dogs in one area and the day care is in another room. Although the kind owners had my pup visiting in the lobby, the day care area and on the treadmill ( they filmed it and it was the pace of a fast walk) which is in the area of the grooming. My two Havanese Shih-Tzu mixes have been going to Tess since they were puppies at another location and we are so glad that to have found her again own doggy salon! One of the two is gets very nervous when we go visit groomers usually, but today she was relaxed hanging out with Carla and Tess! With the long hair that grows into their eyes, they need regular maintenance grooming, so it is great to have a low-stress caring groomer who takes her time to get the job done. My dog loves going to Tesslan not only for grooming but also daycare once a week. I'm not sure why the one reviewer doesn't like it there. When I first came to the salon about 3 months ago, Tess, the owner, who is also a nurse, showed me the whole facility including the bathing area and daycare. Tess is very customer service oriented and wants all the dogs to have an enjoyable experience. That is why you not only get a appointment reminder call but also a follow-up call to make sure you are happy with their service. If you aren't then she will re-groom your dog. My dog is always exhausted after being groomed. Doesn't matter where the grooming took place. The whole grooming process is over stimulating for the dogs so no wonder they are tired when they get home. NO WAY was that lady's dog given any drug at this groomer's!! Perhaps the heat got to her dog these past days like it got to us humans! I highly recommend Tesslan. The dogs are never put in cages, I don't even think they have any. This is a loving place where the dogs roam and make friends. And just because the grooming doesn't take 3 hours doesn't mean they are doing a poor job. I first took my dog there about the time Tesslan opened and Tess was solo. She did a very nice job and even put a little scarf on him. However she charged me $10 more than initially quoted which was already pricey. My dog gets a lot of outdoor play and does a lot of running and running with me when I ride my bicycle so he gets weed seeds and small tangles as a result. Each of the next 3 visits found more and more help and my dog was no longer happy about being there. Each time I was charged the higher than quoted fee by $10. The use a brush that pulls hair and that hurts my dog. I showed them the brush I use which probably takes more time but doesn't pull hair causing pain. Tess response was that her brush is what the supplier recommends. I was getting less and less happy. The last time I took my dog in I was told they could not finish because my 29 pound very loving dog threatened them by showing his teeth. No wonder they tear his hair out and he doesn't like it. I was called to come pick him up and due to traffic arrived 15 minutes later than I had anticipated. The job was only half done, my dog was unhappy and she charged my $100 and told me not to come back. Of course I won't. Somebody working there hurt my dog and I was always overcharged. read more

Is it possible to give more than 5 stars?! Tess is sweet, my dogs loved her AND the place (which says a lot for my little monsters). Tess said they were very sweet boys. Depending on what you believe is reasonable for dog grooming, it could be a little pricey but for me - it's worth it. When I walked in to pick them up, they were freely laying down and relaxing. I am pleased to know that they are not kept in a kennel. I also loved that she had her own little pooch to keep my dogs company. You certainly can tell that she enjoys what she does and takes care of your babies. I even told her I would write a good review as long as she doesn't fill up enough to not groom my dogs her response "That would never happen, I love your boys too much." I brought my dog in for a simple bath and when I picked him up the owner had shaved him all over removing fur that distinguishes him as a specific breed , a Belgian sheepdog. The owner did not ask my permission to do ANY shaving and now it will take a long long time for his fur to regrow . I had told her he is a retired show dog so she was made aware.. when I called her back she said she would refund a portion of my money yes ($30.00) but that I'd have to come back in person to do so. ( she already had my credit card Information so she could have done this remotely Considering we are in the midst of a pandemic right now..... just saying) . I called her back to work this out and arrange other alternatives but she did not answer her phone nor has she bothered to return my calls. I would not recommend his groomer to anyone with a purebred animal , there is not good customer service here and the owner , "Tess" simply wants to 'do her own thing' without listening to the wishes or feedback of paying customers. My dog looks terrible , thanks to 'Tess' . It's a good thing he's not actively being shown now because the AKC wouldn't let a dog groomed by this person back into the ring the way ' Tess' left him. Tess and her team are absolutely fabulous. So caring and loving with the animals. No kenneling during the visit for our pupster and she gives him 'breaks' when he begins to feel anxious. We've been to several groomers in the Bellevue area for our standard poodle. Tess wins hands down! We keep our pup in a teddy bear cut and he always looks so handsome when they're done with him. Fozzy is usually in and out in 2 to 3 hours. This shop does have a strict pick-up policy and is a little pricey, however I've been to other shops that charge about the same amount. As for the strict pick-up policy, I would much rather have this than a nearby groomer that kept my pup for over 7 hours for his usual 8 week cut. read more

Tesslan is a 5 STAR place! The owner, Tess is gentle and kind and our new puppy had a wonderful first experience being groomed. Tess takes individual time with each pup and even has an assistant who is there to help massage and calm your pup if they are nervous. I forget what it's called, but Tess is specially trained to care for the emotions of your pup, and I can see the results. Our pup was calm and happy when she was finished! They told me this place was "stress-free" because the dogs are not put in a cage. But when I brought my dog home he had a fever, wasn't breathing normally, and was so lethargic he wouldn't even eat his favorite treat! He was acting so differently I couldn't recognize him! He didn't eat anything for awhile and seemed slow to respond. He is normally extremely energetic but after the grooming he seemed really tired and could barely keep his eyes open. He was also breathing irregularly. It cost us $72 to get grooming for our 10-pound puppy and I know other places that can do better at a lower cost. We've had our office dog, Wally (a Cockapoo), groomed at a couple of other places before. Hands down this is the best place we have been to! They are pretty new to the area, so we popped in for a visit to see the facility first. Great atmosphere and clean! Tess the owner is amazing! She took the time to give us a tour of the facility and walk us through her grooming process. We LOVE and I mean LOVE the fact they DO NOT cage before and after grooming! I have a nine year old Norfolk Terrier and have been trimming his hair because I didn't know a good groomer. It takes a lot of time and energy to groom a dog so I finally decided it was time to find a groomer. That's when I turned to Yelp and found Tesslan Dog Spa. The reviews on Yelp were glowing because every word is so true!! From the moment I spoke with Tess to make the appointment I knew my dog was going to be well taken care off. When we arrived for the appointment Tess took the time to find out exactly how I wanted his hair to be trimmed. She is so friendly which made us feel very comfortable. A few hours later, I returned to pick up my dog who looked like he could win a best in breed at a dog show! Wow, I was impressed! Before we left, Tess made sure I gave her feedback and wrote notes on her computer for next time. She also took a few pictures and posted them online. The price was very reasonable too! Tess is the best. She practices low-stress techniques for the pet (and I might say the owner). She explained everything that was going to happen to my anxious dachshund in detail, gave me a tour of the grooming stations and was always very calm and soothing. I am glad i found her. She is the only one who can get the nails done satisfactorily without bleeding or pain. The groomings are documented on her facebook page with pictures.
