Our group was loving the Vegas bombs, and I was sucking down the Mexican mojitos like they were going out of style. And then the upstairs is even more fun! They're located in the west loop and we were able to get in immediately, so that's a benefit. Couldn't call ahead, apparently they don't take calls at all, they just have an automated machine. It was really weird, now that I think about it. The food came in huge portions, big bonus points. But they also miss giving you things that would naturally come with the meal - example: fajitas didn't come with cheese or sour cream. When they say something is spicy, they mean it, so I dig that. They had country music playing which was great. Cannot deny a love of Shania Twain. She's a national treasure (despite being Canadian). The drinks were ridiculously expensive though. $22 for a vodka tonic. TWENTY TWO. Bad service, mediocre food When we arrived, we went upstairs to the rooftop patio. It is SO LOUD. Blasting music and packed with people talking/playing games - not the atmosphere for a casual patio dinner. We instead got seated on the downstairs outdoor patio (overlooking the street). We were so far away from the restaurant entrance that we felt neglected. We waited half an hour to be waited on. Service was horrendously slow. We went inside and asked to be reseated inside where we would actually be served. The manager (apologetically) thanked us for our patience and took our drink orders right away. After that...we got asked for our drink orders twice again. Service was terribly disorganized and we could see the waitresses & manager literally discussing our table from a few feet away. The bus staff was also wandering aimlessly throughout the bar the whole time - way more frequently than the wait staff, the bus boys hovered like mosquitoes and it was honestly a little distracting and odd to see them out and about wiping the same table every 15 minutes. Once we ordered, the service was quick and the food was decent. Not anything special - not fantastic but not awful. We paid an exorbitant amount (almost $90) for two drinks, chips and guac, and five tacos. They did offer us free dessert in apology, which was nice. The only reason I would return is for a huge happy hour party on the rooftop; it is a nice event space. For a restaurant...do not recommend. read more

Bar was great, vibes were great. The blonde middle-aged bartender with glasses was absolutely horrible. I went to the bar, she asked what I wanted and told her "I'm DD so a soda water with a lime please." She rolled her eyes at me and immediately started taking other orders and totally ignored me. After about 10 minutes of getting other people drinks I asked her again and she rolled her eyes again, filled my cup halfway with soda water and shoved it at me. If she had just been nice she would've received a 25% tip as I usually am DD and tip this. To the managers, please talk to her about this. What if I was in an AA program but wanted to go out with friends? Would I be shamed for not getting an alcoholic beverage? Absolutely unacceptable! read more

Ambiance: It was so LOUD. We went during the weekend, so I'd expect it to be busy. However, perhaps due to the acoustics, particularly with the rooftop being closed, it was so loud that we had to shout at each other all night to engage in conversation. Unfortunately, the downstairs area wasn't open for seating, but I wonder if it would've been any better down there. Food: Just ok. There are no single taco options if you want to try a variety. I had chicken tacos. They were nothing to write home about. Drinks: I tried a couple of the margaritas. The frozen margarita machine seemed to be struggling that night with freezing the mix, but the flavor was good. Service: No complaints there. Our server was nice, friendly, and personable. Two stars for the vibe. Great space, nice patio. Place you immediately feel you want to hang. I wanted to like the food, I really did. But it was SO bland. Nothing had any flavor, heat, nothing. Even the salsa was bland. My Carne asada was completely overcooked and flavorless, covered in the flavorless salsa. Also I can't for the life of me figure out what they are trying to do with the beans. Margaritas are nothing exceptional. Mine weren't properly mixed so every sip tasted different. The only thing that was half way decent was the queso. Order a beer and the queso, enjoy the vibes, then go to Federales or Cruz Blanca where they season their food. Wow, I've been looking for a good taco place and this restaurant didn't disappoint. The space is big and the decor is fun. The food is amazing. My friends and I started with the animal fries (I wish I had another plate right now) and I chose the crunchy beef tacos for dinner. I had the enchiladas, which came with rice and beans on the side. The enchilada wasn't seasoned much, but the sauce was pretty good. The beans and rice had no flavor whatsoever. Very bland overall. The bar has a country theme and the crowd reflects that. Prices are pretty high for Mexican, with many plates around $20. Overall, it wasn't for me. Casual and fun vibe, but really disappointed in the food. Overpriced for the quality of food that you get. Tacos lacked appropriate toppings a and burrito was very small. The nacho bite appetizer was really good - paid the $2 up charge for chicken instead of pork and was disappointed when the entrees were so lacking. Wish they offered a bean option without pork for non pork eaters and vegetarians. Also, this was not very clearly stated on the menu. Recently visited this new place with a friend and it was honestly pretty average. We were able to get seated on their rooftop immediately without a reservation on a Friday night, which was a pleasant surprise. However, the rest of the experience wasn't as great. My al pastor tacos weren't bad, but definitely lacked flavor. I also ordered the mango habanero marg, which lacked all of the habanero flavor, and was pretty weak of tequila too. The atmosphere was definitely on the loud/rowdy side, which was expected for a Friday night around 8 pm, but it was definitely hard to have a conversation. A great place to stop in for rooftop drinks. We came on a Thursday for happy hour but there we no HH specials at all. Prices are normal for West Loop. We ordered chips (delish and tasted homemade) and salsa (smoky flavor with a kick). Though they were really good and reasonably priced ($5) they don't give refills. We ordered more without being told so it cost $10 kinda expensive, but, oh well. Our group ordered only one margarita (loved it) but the rest of us ordered beer without ordering other food. Honestly this would have been a four or maybe five for us, but had to deduct because of the ancient and insecure payment. We were going to a concert and stopped in for chips and dips. The guacamole, the queso and the salsa were fricking delicious. We all loved it. Our server was lovely. Clearly this is a Canadian thing because it wasn't the only time a server asked for my credit card before disappearing with it. We got cash to avoid this insecure and risky method of charging customers, but Texan Taco Bar doesn't take cash. My advice to TTB and every other restaurant in Chicago still processing customers' cards out of their sight, is to get the portable machines you bring to the tables. I felt very uncomfortable and of course, the server probably took it personally, like I didn't trust him with my card, but I shouldn't have been put in that position. I came here before I was going to a concert at The United Center. It was very crowded on a Friday evening. The tables were a little close together. I got a strawberry margarita which was okay, it was a little sour. My friend and I shared nachos. The nachos were nacho bites so every chip had all the toppings which was amazing. I never want a dry nacho chip. I just wish there was a little more cheese. We shared dessert at the end, the Cookie Monster, and that was good and shaped like a taco.
