This Austin staple has been around since the 80s and now they are a food truck with its own little food park with picnic benches, etc. There is talk that they will rebuild as a brick and mortar once again. If so, I do hope they keep this cute setup. I love the red doors at the entrance into the park. It gives a fun, quaint, and eclectiv vibe. The French bread baquettes are good. Cute little bakery truck in wampus! Got a seasonal strawberry shortcake latte, jalapeño cheese croissant and breakfast tostada. The latte was okay, nothing exceptional but still good. I enjoyed the pastry but it felt a bit too heavy halfway in and buttery. As for the breakfast tostada, it was good! I would say overall everything was okay given the price. I received a $5 gift card for aTexas French Bread for placing 1st in the 10- mile Run for the Water race. A friend also won and gave me his $5 gift card. I had never gone to that restaurant because I don't eat bread and thought there was nothing for me there. But I decided to check it out today after my run. I was very hungry and wanted to see what I could get for $10. I knew the restaurant had burned Dom several years ago. I arrived there to find it was now a food truck in a charming yard with ample tables and chairs. I surveyed the menu and inquired as to the gluten-free options. The server recommended yogurt with homemade organic granola, blueberries and honey. That sounded great to me! It was only $8.00. The granola was crunchy and not sweetened, to my liking. The yogurt was also plain and unsweetened. It's rare to find unsweetened yogurt and granola. The blueberries were fresh, and the hint of honey topped it off. It was delicious and filling! Full list of ingredients: organic rolled oats. canola oil, honey, almonds, walnuts, raisins, dried cranberries. Since I had a little money left on the gift cards, she offered me a small drip coffee. I offered to add a few dollars, which I had in the car, but she said it was okay to help myself tomorrow the coffee. Another plus: their utensils are sustainable and compostable. Order ahead and HIGHLY recommend doing so, so you don't have to wait. When I got there wait time was an estimated 30-45 mins. The pastries/bread and latte are truly GREAT. Everything I had tasted so fresh and I couldn't decide on a favorite. Suggest getting half sandwiches so you can try different ones. They also come with a generous portion of chips and salsa (not pictured). Latte was a nice balance of sweet and not overpowering. Only downside was parking. Texas French Bread is doing a great job holding down the fort while they rebuild after the fire. For now, they're serving breakfast and lunch out of an Airstream next door to the old building, with a shaded outdoor seating area that reminds me a bit of a beer garden. It might be a tougher sell in peak Austin summer heat, but for now, it's very pleasant. The food is excellent across the board, but the real standout (unsurprisingly) is the bread and pastries. The green chile croissant was fantastic: buttery, flaky, and just the right balance of sweet and savory. I also had the vegetarian sandwich, which is basically a banh mi, and it was fresh and flavorful. I only wish the portion was a bit bigger for the price, but quality-wise, it delivered. There was a curry soup on special the day I went. It had promise, but tasted a little watered down and under-seasoned. Not a dealbreaker, but it stood out in contrast to how great everything else was. Also worth noting: no salt or condiments on the picnic tables, which makes sense given the setup, but it's something to keep in mind. Overall, it's clear that the team cares deeply about what they're making. Can't wait to see what the next chapter looks like once they're back in a full kitchen. read more

My husband and I returned to Texas French Bread for lunch while on our ride. I love the atmosphere there. The outside seating is great! It's shaded by huge trees. We ordered our food at the trailer and were given a number and sat down and waited. It didn't take too long before we got our order. I ordered the Ham and Swiss Sandwich. It's my favorite. It's a yummy light lunch. The sandwich is good and the chips and salsa are a great side. Overall it's one of our favorite stopping places. Imagine our heartbreak when learning Austin's darling, the OG French bakery (and West Campus cultural hub) burned down. I've loved Texas French Bread for years, ever since discovering their amazing loaves at the farmers market. When their flagship store burned down, it was a real loss for the community. So when I found out they were still baking and selling out of an Airstream right on the side of the property, I was all in. No reason Texans shouldn't be supporting them. I finally had the chance to visit Texas French Bread. My fiancé and I each ordered half sandwiches for lunch, a cappuccino, and a whole wheat sourdough boule to take home. The bread is fantastic! Crispy, crunchy crust with a soft and fluffy crumb. I've been enjoying it with my morning fried eggs and veggies. They are still operating outside out of a vintage airstream but they have a full breakfast and lunch menu and baked goods for sale outside. They anticipate their re-grand opening in 2025. There's plenty of seating with large benches and tables to share. The ginormous tree will protect you from the scorching sun but when we stopped by it was raining and the tree kept us dry. We were visiting UT and this place came highly recommended. We got directions but were worried when we drove up to a fenced boarded up building. So I called and learned they were open in the garden out back. I'd recommend they hang a banner or sign street side to let people know they are open for business in the back. We almost drove off to find another place. We turned around pulled into the empty parking lot. We love supporting local businesses and enjoyed sitting under the big oak trees. There was a lot of pollen/dirt all over our table and I was a little sad it wasn't coming off of my purse. It would have been nice to have a larger towel to wipe down the tables. We waited a while for our food. Seemed to take a little longer (20 minutes) than I'd expect, considering it was pretty empty. Maybe they were short of staff. The food was hit or miss - some items were delicious and filling portions, others simply bare bones. But let me back up and start at the start. All the baked items here are made with organic flour. The cafe has cute seating indoors and in their charming patio. The bakery has a separate line to order to-go. When we were seated, they informed us that they had no more glasses so water would take a while. Then we tried to order, our server knew nothing of the menu. We added a couple of items and the server went MIA. No follow ups, no coffee refills, no order additions - I mean, the service was very "French." We kept going up to the host stand ourselves for simple requests like cutlery and water. I wonder if the automatic gratuity on the bill removes any responsibility from the server to provide any service at all? Next time, I'm only going to pickup bakery items and eat elsewhere. Texas French Bread is back, from 8am-2pm Tuesday - Sunday, in an cute outdoor location immediately behind their shell of a building. When a fire burned down the kitchen and indoor dining area last year, like many locals, I was crushed. But now, TFB is operating out of an airstream in their garden and it's lovely. The garden has large picnic tables and small cafe tables. They are selling baked treats, loaves of bread and lunches, including sandwiches and soup. Prices are a little steep- I think my cinnamon sugar croissant was $5, but it's so delicious, I can't wait to celebrate it's return more often. read more

I'm so incredibly disappointed with the current version of Texas French Bread. I ordered the Club Sandwich, $16. Bought a loaf of bread. And fizzy water (no Topo). It took too long, and what I was given was unacceptable. (Photos) Please know I have good memories of this place before the pandemic so shabby service and puny servings is not cool. Haven't been here for years. Dinner was OK (burger)... there were no heaters on a chilly night. A server carried a heater out to one table but we were not offered one. This should be out there. THEN we got to dessert. I used to LOVE their butterscotch pudding....BUT they don't have coffee for dinner service!? NONE. I want coffee with dessert. They don't make the pudding to go (so I could have it with coffee). The pudding wasn't as good as it remember. :( We settled on hot tea... which came AFTER we finished our dessert!? AND he told us we should let it steep for 2 min more!? What did it take to make a cup of tea!? Water & a bag in a cup. Ridiculous. It may be another 7-10 years before we come back, if ever. Honestly, we actually only came back tonight because Cabo Bob's was closed on Sunday. Haven't missed TFB. I recently learned about their sourdough batards, and I love, love, love them! And they put them on their regular menu! So, I started ordering them and noticed that they were significantly smaller than what I had originally received. I wrote them, and finally after writing them *again,* I received a response letting me know that Commercial customers receive 5 pound batards, but regular customers receive only 3 pounds. I think it's a little bit unfair to pay $12 for a 3 pound batard and not even be told about a difference in size. So, I called and spoke with Chloe. I asked if I could please purchase a 5 pound batard since I had received one when I first ordered. She told me that that was a mistake, 5 pound loaves are for wholesale customers only and when I asked, could I please just go ahead and purchase one, that I would pay the difference if need be, she said absolutely not! What really gets my goat is that they already sold me one and now they refuse to sell me another. It's such bad business. What ever happened to putting customers first? Millennials just don't care. I was accompanied by a group of friends(4 total)at Texas French Bread and our server was incredibly friendly and attentive to our every need. I didn't each much but chose something simple, yet delectable-- their croissant. It was a crisp, buttery croissant with the sweet flavor of cinnamon and sugar which were awesome! On top of that, the surrounding environment was unbelievably serene and peaceful. There was a lush, green garden just outside the cafe but inside was warm and cozy. We all thoroughly enjoyed our experience and I look forward to returning again with much more of an appetite. read more

I've been dying to try the veg sandwich after seeing photos on instagram. My experience left a lot to be desired. I ordered the veg sandwich and noticed two prices - $11/15. I assumed $11 for a sandwich and $15 for some sort of lunch special (sandwich, drink, chips). Nope, $11 for a half sandwich and $15 for a whole. I ordered the whole sandwich and was super dissatisfied. I thought $15 would get me something fresh and flavorful, but it got me a small one dimensional sandwich that was heavy on the hummus. The goat cheese and the hummus tasted like competing flavors and the veggies were roasted and slimy. No avocado, no greens as advertised on menu. Just a mishmash of goat cheese, hummus and roasted veggies. No freshness to be found. The entire kitchen setup is in an airstream with outdoor seating. I expected at least a bigger sandwich with the low overhead TFB has on a building, utilities, etc. I understand TFB lost everything in the fire but customers should not be punished by paying astronomical prices for mediocre food. read more

Great food but I have a problem with the "equitable service" fee. Came in here to buy a medium loaf of ciabatta bread for 5.95, which is already a premium price but worth it because of the quality. But then to get charged a 20% fee on top of that? Feels greedy to me. If you're going to stick service charges on customers who dine in, that's one thing, but essentially taxing people to buy a loaf of bread feels very wrong to me. In my opinion, if you're using "equitable wage service fee" as the description, then it leads one to believe that the owner is not able to pay an employee an equitable wage without passing on an additional tax to the customer, and this isn't standard anywhere on to go items. read more

I had high hopes for TFB, but the service and the price were just unacceptable. We were given a couple of small glasses of water (6-8oz maybe?) that were never refilled. Every other table besides ours was given a carafe of ice water to refill their glasses. Our server also never brought us silverware or napkins. I ordered a croissant, a bowl of soup, and a market salad and the salad never came. I didn't bring it up to the waitress (who I guess forgot to include it in our order) because our bill was already $50 for a sandwich, a glass of wine, a cappuccino, a bowl of soup, and a croissant. Came here last weekend with a some friends on a Saturday morning. We called ahead and got a time for about 45 minutes later. We had drive by this place many times and didn't know that the place occupied as much space as it did. Even though it was a relatively hot day the patio seating kept relatively cool with all the cover. The place was really nice and had a nice vibe to it. After being seated it was about 10 minutes before we were brought any water which was pretty inconvenient. After a while we got our order in and from there our food was about another 20-30 minutes. The food was pretty good, but unfortunately portion sizes were pretty small. I enjoyed the meal, but still a bit hungry after with an omelette and French toast split. While we enjoyed our experience and our waitress was super nice, the service itself wasn't great. We had one refill on waters which we downed right away and we were there over an hour. We also had to ask to receive our check from another server. Fortunately at the end they brought extra cookies which we got to try, but the weren't all that good, but much appreciated. May give another chance in future, but wasn't impressed on first visit. read more

If possible, I would give this place 3.5 stars. It's a cute place to have brunch, but after seeing the prices on the menu, my expectations for the quality of the food was pretty high...I mean $14 for an eggs benedict?! For that much, it better be amazing. Unfortunately, it was barely mediocre. When the food came out, my eggs benedict came out completely dry (see picture). There wasn't even a hint of a wet yolk, which for that price really isn't acceptable. That being said, the waiter was so nice and friendly. When he saw my eggs, he talked to the manager for us. Half the dish was comped and he gave us two cookies for free, which was really sweet of him. So although the quality of food was less than par, the service was really nice and they really put in the effort to accommodate us. Overall, the food is pretty mediocre. The coffee is decent. Texas French Bread is actually one of our favorite restaurants in Austin--we ordered take-out from here during the pandemic to support them. Friday night was our first time back for in-person dining and we have to say that they are really fumbling about. Drinks didn't all come out at the same time, and there was a whole song and dance for a glass of sparkling rose. Save your bottle service for when someone orders a bottle, not a glass! The complimentary bread is EXTRAORDINARY but the butter was almost frozen solid. This is such an amateur move-pet peeve! How hard is it to take your ramekins out to come to room temp before service?? We shared the market salad to start. It was fine. For dinner, our daughter got their cheeseburger (very light on the cheese), which was pretty good. We split the drum and the pork milanese. The fish was delicious and perfectly cooked, as were the veggies, so it was the best dish of the night. The pork was dry and even the lemon slice couldn't save it--someone only thought to drop off a sharp knife AFTER the plate was put down. Get your mise together! Also, someone dropped a ramekin of ketchup en route to our table, which we would normally be unfazed about, but this time it felt endemic to an overall sloppy service. Dessert was lemon tart, budino, and coconut cake. All delicious, but the budino was the best. Actually lemon tart was only OK, but still good. We were celebrating a birthday, so the set of parents that we were dining with paid, making us feel more generous with stars. 3.5 rounding up to 4 because we really do think this place is one of the few dining treasures left in Austin and we would be devastated if something happened to it. I got the BLT sandwich which the cashier said was popular. I didn't expect it to be so tiny. I think it was probably about the size of my fist. There was real pieces of bacon like ham instead of the thin slice bacon, which I enjoyed. But for $10, to get some chips and salsa with my sandwich was just not worth it.
