The food was amazing and so was the service. The Covid-19 policy was enforced and all servers and patrons had on mask unless eating. The chips and salsa were extremely fresh and I honestly wish I could purchase anytime and have them shipped to me. Ask for a to go order. All the dishes were extremely tasty. I had the chicken chimichanga and would order it again. My daughter had the fajitas and it was more than enough for two people. Had the Tres Leche cake for dessert. I met some friends here for a drink. Full disclosure, I did not have food (other than chips and salsa). The ambiance was alright. The service was really good, the staff members were awesome and attentive. The drinks were okay. I ordered a Mexican Martini and it was too sweet for my taste. I then ordered a pomegranate margarita, and that was a little weird. It was a regular frozen margarita with either juice or syrup floating on the top... There is no better place to go for true Mexican Food than at the Texican Cafe. As the marque sign states, "Old El Paso Cuisine". My wife and I came to the Austin surrounding area back in 2015 from El Paso and have always enjoyed the food at the Texican. Several days ago and since we had a taste for some true excellent Mexican cuisine, we decided stop at our favorite place. As always the food was excellent, but I would be remiss, if I didn't mention our server, Cody. You could tell that he enjoys what he does and cares about his customers. A very pleasant individual. We have been coming here for quite a few years now and it's always consistently good! The prices compare to most other restaurants and the portions are plentiful. My husband and I usually get different items from the menu but my favorite is their chicken fajita enchiladas, so good! We especially love Ginger! She is the most energetic, sweet, and wonderful waitress and I'm always thrilled when she waits on us. She's a hoot! Wow! I just got asked by the 'manager' for my certificate for my service dog. I let her know there is no such thing and she argued, "yes there is. I know" I offered to take the owner's information to educate them regarding the laws and Service Dogs. State and Federal Law code 121.002 and 437.023 title 1 and 2 Violated my rights in a situation where she was uneducated. I let her know the two questions that she could legally ask. She still argued with me. I offered repeatedly to educate them and finally offered to call the police so an officer could educate them in the correct procedure. We have been segregated from the main dining in a restaurant that my service dog has been to maybe 20 times previous. After quite a hassle, we have finally had our order taken 10 minutes after being seated. According to this woman, the Owner put his staff is jeopardy of a lawsuit by misinforming his team. read more

PLENTY of options, a dozen margarita choices (though I keep it simple, some were to sweet for my liking, but trying flight is a fun way to find out). Small portion of only cheese quesadilla for such a high price $14.99. Can get better quality quesadillas for a lot cheaper at other places. I used to publicize how delicious their food was and would refer people to this place. It was very humiliating to have my referrals come back to me saying they got bad food quality and services and I decided to try it myself and got their bad food and services. Ordered to go. Hadn't eaten here in a while (done in or to-go) and I completely remembered why we don't. It was overwhelmingly horrible. Worse than I expected. I ordered some enchiladas with a cheese sauce and bits of carne guisada on top. The enchiladas were unraveled and had 4 pieces of meat on top. The cheese sauce was goopy and just a mess that didn't even taste like anything. The tortilla was hard, like it was stale. the meat was so hard I could barely chew it. Found this restaurant in college through the Passbook and fell in love. The fajitas, queso, margaritas and my fav...Gollo's Pollo kept me a regular customer. When I moved back south and found they had a Brodie Oaks location I was excited. So sad to see it close. I have been going to Texican Cafe for decades... and nearly every year to celebrate my birthday; however, today will likely keep me away from Texican Cafe for the remainder of my days on earth. Our waiter was completely disinterested in helping us... and certainly had no worries about making this birthday dining experience a great one. We had to grab other waitstaff to help us when we needed anything and our waiter never bothered to let anyone know when he would be stepping away for a bit... which was often (to get on his phone). As we were leaving, I accidentally left my birthday card on the edge of the table. The girl cleaning the table saw it, but still dumped it in the bussing bucket along with food and drink all over it! Why would anyone DO THAT?!?? And, instead of just giving us extra salsa for our to go boxes, the waiter charged us an extra $7 for to go salsa! Happy Birthday to me!! Hmmmm, back in the day, around 2008 I would meet my friends here for happy hour & I think it was more about the company versus the food or drink because last night, 2021, I joined my husband for a light dinner & we were highly disappointed with the "Mexican martinis" - they literally tasted like Gatorade with old tequila. We had to order 2 shots of silver tequila, even then it was not helpful. The nachos were good; very safe to order. I highly doubt I'll return. We spent over $60 for 2 kids nachos & 2 martinis. What the heck? Don't waste your money on this venue. They need to step up their bartending skills of better drinks. Terrible "margaritas" - just terrible. read more

Super sad about this. I have lived in Austin all my life and would frequently visit. Last night was the last time for me. I wish I would of taken pictures of my food. It was awful. The time before last night's visit was awful but we decided to give it one last shot. Our waitress was training someone and instead of putting in our order for apps she and her trainee decided to take our order and then go into the corner (we were outside) and proceed to stand there for a good 15 minutes drinking water, and talking. Sure they could of been actually "training" in that moment but go put in our order first. We received our stuffed avocado that was soaking in fluids on top of lettuce. It was seriously astonishing that one would serve you food looking like this. Completely soggy and attracting a mass amount of flies. We placed our dish at the corner of the table in hopes our waitress would pick up the plates but instead we were left to combat the flies. Our "food" came out and this was the final straw. We got fajitas which looked like enough meat to make one small taco. The tortillas were covered in a napkin and a wet plate sat on top of them. My flautas looked like a mass of wet sloppy garbage. We never once were asked if we would like our chips and salsa refilled. Just a terrible experience and the final straw for us. It's no wonder we were able to get seated on a Saturday night at 6pm when most places would be slammed. As a vegetarian, I often have to request nutritional substitutions for meat (like spinach or veggies, not just cheese) and they're always very accommodating to my needs. Me and my friends just purchased houses right nextdoor to The Texican Cafe. We were wanting to order take out tonight so I went in to place an order for myself and 12 of my friends. When I got to the counter the man up front seemed a bit busy and taken a back that I was ordering food to-go. He asked me for my name and what I wanted. I told him I didn't know. I've never been here and was ordering for quite a few people so need to see something so I could order. There was a bit of a pause, nothing was said so finally I asked to see a menu. He said they had no menus and I'd have to go online. Okay, I get it, covid so they don't have menus but I didn't think of bringing my phone with me. Was just gonna be a quick order and head home. He said I could use his phone, which is a bit weird right? If you're not allowing menus because of covid, than why would you hand me your phone? Not to be rude but if you've been ringing people up all day and exchanging money would you be far more likely to get me sick with your phone. I'm just saying put a menu up front for people to look at. Some people don't have smart phones so googling it might not be an option. Mi Ranchito is just as close and they will be getting our business from now on. Texican Cafe has been around forever serving up family friendly Tex Mex fare. Having visited before, but having not gone back in ages, I headed over to Texican with my girlfriend. Our experience started off not well, as it took the wait staff 10 minutes to show up to our table. We were waited on by two people, we assume one was in training, though neither bothered to ever say anything. On to the food, the chips were uninspired and bland. The salsa nothing to go out of your way for. I had the beef fajitas, which were serviceable, but not great. My girlfriend ordered the San Antonio enchiladas. She described them as bland and unimpressive. I find it hard to recommend Texican Cafe unless you have a large family and want a margarita. The margaritas appeared to be plentiful, large, and strong. We have been ordering Texican Cafe for years! We are quite fond of their tortilla soup. About two years ago I found a piece of plastic material in my soup. It looked like from a plastic bag. :( When I called and talked to someone they were VERY nice and handled the situation great. I went back to show her the plastic I found and she said it looked like the plastic the chicken comes in. She apologizes and refunded me the money and offered me some food. Today I just found some uncooked chicken in the soup. :( It is CLEARLY uncooked and I will post a picture here. When we called to inform them of the issue the gentleman said, "We cook the chicken for hours. It is cooked." No offer for a refund, nothing. My boss ate all of her soup, I only ate 1/4 of my soup, and my assistant ate 1/3 of hers. Needless to say my assistant and I are hungry! If this had been handled better we would return. I use to work in the food industry and I know mistakes are made BUT it's how you handle them that matter. This was not handled the right way and I hope that no one gets sick from today's soup. :( They have just lost business for 3 people that have been ordering at least once a week for the last 4 years. read more

The Texican generously gives these free with a to-gomeal, but we wanted to buy a pint of their delicious salsa and salty chips to serve our out of town guest. Imagine my shock when the lady at the register said, That'll be $7.84. For a regular sized bag of chips and a pint of salsa. That's ridiculous. Next time I'll order a plate for $10 and ask for extra hot sauce and chips for free. Lesson learned. read more

Shocking that in my Yelp career that I've never reviewed the original Texican Cafe. We used to eat here alot, sadly I haven't visited in years. My absence wasn't because it went down hill, we just stopped venturing into Manchaca proper I suppose. Today while helping a friend in that neighborhood I returned to one of my old favorites. I can't speak for alot of the menu as here I was a creature of habit. I can without hesitation endorse the stuffed jalapenos. Golden Potato crust filled with cream cheese sounds on par with every other place in Austin. Texican takes it to another level pairing it with red jalapeno jelly. The balance of sweet and spicy is miles ahead of the mundane and normal ranch dressing. Next on my list would be the Tilapia Cozumel. Grilled filets with charred tomatoes, green bells, onions, and whole serrano peppers. If that wasn't enough on the plate it also arrives with a shrimp enchilada, guacamole, pico, rice and beans. Its a $15 plate of awesomeness. Rooster also enjoyed his soft taco plate with shredded chicken. I like the chips they serve, but truthfully the salsa could use a bit more spice. Service was mostly attentive and the food arrived in a reasonable fashion. I can't believe its been roughly 5 years since I last walked in these doors. The Texican should be on your regular restaurant rotation if you live in the area. read more

Ever visited a place and it was great, but worried the next time might not be so good? This place did NOT disappoint on our second visit. We had been a couple of years between visits (just passing though from a family trip) and I couldn't even remember the name but I remembered the salsa! I came into my Yelp account to find my old review so we could stop again. Ha! I rarely leave reviews so it was easy to find. Anyway, long story short: here we are 3 weeks later and I'm still wishing I had more of the salsa. Everything we ordered was awesome. Special mention to the rice & beans though. It's better than the standard you find at other places. Our waitress was Ginger and she was so much fun! Please tell her we said hello and we hope to see her again sometime. After 4 years in Austin, I finally checked this place out and to my surprise it was great!! I'm not normally a huge Tex mex fan but after a long day at the lake , we were starving and Mexican food was at the top of the list. Texican cafe on manchaca is close to the house so why not ! On all accounts, this place is awesome ! Casual, family friendly, affordable and good food ! Our server was Amanda and she was sweet and even put up with my drunk friend ! She recommended the fajitas and they were awesome ! We order the steak and shrimp combo fajitas and they came out piping hot and fresh with tons of meat and veggies ! Not too oily but grilled just right ! We also had a small queso and guacamole , which were both delicious !! I was impressed ! I will definitely be back ! read more
