The food, atmosphere, and staff were all amazing. Very friendly and welcoming, and gladly talked about the various dishes, flavors, and spice levels. They do Thai levels of heat, not American. If you're used to a medium or mild most places you would want to stick to a 1 or 2 for heat. If you enjoy a good inferno for your food, the 4 and 5 will bring tears and sweat. Thai Iced Tea with half & half is a delicious way to cut the burn. Regardless of your preference for heat, the food was great. The flavors were balanced well and everything was fresh and tasty. Staff was very attentive and made you feel like you were visiting friends / family, not just a customer at a restaurant. The curry was great, the Rangoon was horrible - not crispy, sitting in oil in the container and no flavor. Another turnoff to this place is that they have a sign posted that says delivery service people are not welcome to use the restroom because they aren't the "customer"... what a horrible policy! First time having Thai food and I was supppppper impressed. The flavors are super tasty! The smells are amazing. I ordered the pepper steak . The food was hot, and the pepper and steak were cooked to perfection. My husband had the shrimp friend and loved it. I had a taste as well, and it was banginnnn! This was my first visit to this restaurant. I was excited to go because of the positive reviews I read online. I was highly disappointed... I'm a pescatarian and my shrimp drunken noodles came out with pieces of beef in it. The shrimp fried rolls taste nothing at all like shrimp; it was obvious the rolls had been re-fried (I fear several times). Based on the taste and texture of the food I have a strong sense that I was being served food that was old or reheated from the previous night or nights. It is obvious covid has taken its toll on this restaurant. I was served wine that had gone bad... very disappointing. About 15 minutes after being seated and served I asked for the check and took to the food to go so that it wouldn't be served to the next customer. I ate here about 3 days ago and I will say the food was good that day. I had Pad Thai with medium/3 spice. I went back to my job which is 6 mins away ranting about how good the food was. The customer service was good that day as well. Fast forward to today. I brought 7 customers to this establishment because I thought the food was good and the customer service was good based on past experience. Well today it was a totally different experience. I ordered 2 orders of Basil Thai Rice and 2 orders of of Chicken Pad Thai plus some other things. I asked for medium/3 spice on the food with the exception of 1 Chicken Pad Thai. The person wanted hot/5. The lady taking the order informed me that the 5 is really hot and suggested a 4 and we said that was fine. We got the food and all of it was at least a 5. The food was so spicy that I couldn't eat it. One bite and I immediately started sweating. My stomach is still burning from the spice and I ate 1 bite 3 hours ago. I tried calling and letting them know and I was told that they cook the food the same way every time. The owner Mel completely cut me off several times and didn't want to hear anything I had to say and insisted that her staff told me it was hot and they cook things the same way even though she was not there during my visit. She also said they have never had any complaints. The crazy part about it all is that I was very calm and respectful to this woman. It would have been nice if she would have just acknowledged that they screwed up. I was not asking for a refund on the food but an acknowledgement that they screwed up. I honestly believe they cooked all of the Pad Thai together and added the spice to the hottest level. Which made it not edible. Or maybe the cook was more heavy handed than the one from the other day. I don't know but I did not like the way they handled the situation. So now it doesn't matter. Thai Basil has just lost my business and the others that I recommended to the establishment. Correction: This was my first visit to Thai Basil, and I was so impressed. The staff and service was great, and everyone was so friendly. The atmosphere is nice, and I enjoyed the music as well. We started with vegetable tempura. It was so good; the sweet potatoes were my favorite. We also ordered the spicy mango chicken and the seafood pot. The meals were delicious and flavorful! The worst communication in good service that I have ever experienced in all of Hampton Roads. Ordered 3 things for takeout on their website. Time said 30 minutes. Waited for an additional 30 minutes in the store. We were walked past and ignored by staff 4 times and never given a status update. Will not return or recommend. Common courtesy and decent communication goes a long way in the service industry especially when times are hard for the restaurant business. The food here is so yummy! I read several reviews prior to visiting (both good & bad). The ones that speak of the level of spice in the food are legit. If you don't like spice then definitely don't even try the 1 star level because it was really hot. You always have the option to manually add spice from their spice condiment dishes. I ordered the drunken noodles with shrimp and the flavor was filled with fresh ginger and basil. My friend ordered the yellow curry. It was made with coconut milk rather than the typical oily broth that most places make, making it a healthier option. All of the appetizers were very fresh and flavorful. The servers (even the owner) came by to the table regularly and were so cute with their comments and suggestions. Just like everyone else, I really wanted to like this place in Olde Towne Ptown, being that we need good restaurants...but, this place has quickly turned into an awful dining spot. The first few times we went, I was super impressed, but the last 5 visits, I have been extremely disappointed and will not return. The food tastes different and isn't made the same way it was before. We ordered things the past 2 visits they were not even edible! Upon complaint, the lady I assume is the owner comes out aggressively defensive and blames your taste buds! She claims everything is made the same as before....buy IT'S NOT! One entree even tasted like chemicals! Just like most new restaurants in downtown Ptown, it will not stay open long, due to poor customer service, inconsistent quality and inept ownership! Called for takeout last night, ordering the pepper steak with brown rice. When I picked the food up the bag was suspiciously light, but the bag was tied in a knot, and I was distracted because of a discrepancy with payment as I had ordered online and something went wrong. The gentleman at the register was professional and accommodating as we ironed out the issue. Upon returning home and settling in I turned my attention to my meal, already disappointed before I opened the bag because of the small size, but I had attributed that to shrink-nomics. When I opened the container I quickly realized that the reason it was so light is that there was no brown rice, which is a staple of the meal. When I called to rectify the issue, I informed them that I was already in the house and settled in and I would not be returning to pick up the rice, and inquired as to what could be done to fix it on my next visit. The manager informed me that all she could do was to not charge me for the rice next time. What? I just paid 30+ dollars for a meal with one of the main components missing, and all you can do is give me what I already paid for the next time I come in? Meanwhile, I have a half-meal that I can't enjoy because one of the main ingredients is not there, aside from the fact that the little bit of food I did have did absolutely nothing to sustain me and I was forced to bolster the meal with a pack of Ramen -- which I did NOT want because of the starch content, hence me ordering BROWN rice in the first place. Needless to say, I'll never return, but if you do decide to take your chances with this place, be sure you have everything you paid for, because these people have absolutely no grace or knowledge of good customer service. As chef, I know that the ingredients of that dish cost less than 3 bucks for them to produce, with the dish priced at 19+ after the upcharge for the brown rice. If the manager is reading this I hope she realizes that replacing my dish at a cost of 3 bucks -- especially being that I paid 30 -- would have been a lot less expensive than this review. When I ordered my meatless Green Curry, this woman CONVINCED ME to pay as if the dish had meat, promising an abundance of vegetables to justify the price without protein. In the end, I got white rice, a few sticks of celery, and sauce for $9.99, the same price as if I ordered shrimp. When I made her aware of my disappointment, she chose to patronize me, reminding me that this was not a "Chinese Restaurant " rather than addressing my concerns. I admit I tend to travel to smaller cities with low culinary expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised overall with the Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Portsmouth area's restaurants we went to. This one was a standout and worth trekking to Portsmouth if you're staying nearby. It has tons of vegan options, for one. The summer rolls were great, but the best item we had was the green curry -- comparable to anything I could get in NYC. The spice level was about perfect (I could've done with a little more, but it wasn't so mild that it was disappointing, which tends to be my main issue at restaurants).
