The dining room was nicer in person than it seemed in the photos which was a pleasant surprise. We have gone here multiple times over the years...I don't know why-Maybe it's too long in between and we forget, but each time I'm generally disappointed. This last time was the worst. We ordered a green curry and pad si ew - both shrimp as my husband and I don't eat meat. My husband went to pick it up and when he got it home the pad si ew was beef. So now that I didn't have dinner I figured I would call to at least get refunded. I never even got an apology- It was less than 20 minutes since he picked up the food so I was just thinking an over the phone refund would work, but I was told I had to go in. So the next day I went back and the woman working looked at me like I was crazy and told me I could have just done this refund over the phone. I was able to get refunded but wasn't happy that there were so many unnecessary steps when ordering a simple take out dinner. The place was very dirty. The door had a sign made out of half a manilla folder asking not to slam it because it was broken. And at dinner time they were empty. I think we have given them enough chances to make good food and have good service and they fail most times. We will not be returning. read more

As a fan of spicy food, I find that 95% of the restaurants in the area are over-hyping their level of spice. This is not the case for the Thai Cafe. A construction paper sign states that it is not their responsibility if the food is too hot or not hot enough. The spice scale works 1-30. I found myself giggling, assuming that this would be yet another disappointing exaggeration. When asking for the number that typically made people cry, I was advised to order a 5-10. I laughed to myself again, but did not feel confident enough to ignore the advice of the hostess. I ordered the pad bai gai plow with the house special meats and cashews added at a level 10 and immediately found myself polishing off a beer and a glass of milk to tame the heat. The egg drop soup is also among my favorite things. While it is very simple, it is the surest cure to any sickness that may ail you Do not be fooled by the outside or by the 3.5 star rating (especially if you're a fan of spice), this place is awesome!! I may have had better stir fry in my life, but this has been one of my favorite meals that Traverse City has to offer. read more

It's a shame. The food is excellent but they are so understaffed. The place is tiny and there's no designated busser, so everyone that came in had to wait several minutes to be seated and served. Several people waited over 5 minutes for their drink, and over 10 minutes to have their orders taken. The place is absolutely filthy, which makes me queasy about the quality of the food. The food tastes fantastic, but if it takes 45 minutes to clear a table, who knows what the kitchen looks like? I hope they are popular and successful enough to update their location soon. It's a shame - the food is great but the service is just so slow and the place is just so dirty. The masaman curry is bland, completely plain. Chock full of red pepper spice but I could have made it better myself. Tastes like all the veggies are from cans. Bleh. I'm just not impressed. read more

Best Thai food in Northern Michigan! We're from Colorado where we had our pick of Asian cuisine and some great Thai restaurants. When we moved to Northern Michigan, we were disappointed to find that it was lacking until...my husband happened to come across the Thai Cafe! Tucked between a Jimmy Johns and a Little Ceasars, this gem of a restaurant has incredible authentic Thai food! Possibly the best we ever had! It is now our go to place even though we have to travel an hour and a half to dine there, SO worth it! And the staff are exceptional! Lewis and Arielle go above and beyond, service is bar-none! I've eaten at Thai places all over the country as it's my favorite food, I absolutely love this place. I'm really picky with coconut soup, and I'd say theirs is in my top 3. The service is always super friendly and personal, and the food is consistent. I usually order the same thing with slight deviation but this place is a great find upon moving to TC. Had dinner there last night. Service was slow and terrible in spite of not being crowded. Appetizer was served without plates, eating utensil or serving utensil. When I asked for a glass of ice (for water) I was told they were out of ice. In both cases, young man seemed very put out with our requests. Peanut curry pad thai was good, pad cashew stir fry was bland despite being drenched in sauce. They couldn't serve Thai iced tea for some reason. Service was friendly, although I got the feeling that the one lady was doing everything. People who have had a lot of Thai food will be underwhelmed, but for Traverse City you can't expect much. read more

Unfortunately for my family the food we ordered tonight is inedible. We called as soon as we took our carry out home and realized there must have been an error in the kitchen. The manager offered no assistance and did not offer to remake the food or issue a refund. There is no customer trust. We were told "medium has a small kick and that's just their spice level". This unfortunately had a persistent burn. We spent good money trusting we would get what we ordered. They obviously have a policy in place that offers no resolution. I would advise you to give your money to people who care about your business. As someone who loves to cook for others and does so often, you always want the food you present to be enjoyed. This food is not made with care or love and my family is well traveled and we know the difference. I now leave you to go pat the sweat from my poor husbands head as he tries to eat a Tablespoon of chili flake to keep me from feeling I wasted money! read more

YAY! YAY! YAY! They are finally open, and they are really, really good. I was so impressed with this place and they've only been open a few weeks. Usually it takes a restaurant a while to settle it and get their shit together, but not the Thai Cafe. They were on the ball right from the start. I was happy to find their menu is fairly comprehensive, the owner is Thai (or spent much of her life there), and the taste is authentic (especially for Traverse City). I've never had an experience so bad that I felt the need to write a review. I ordered Pad Thai with chicken. A staple Thai dish that I had thought was impossible to mess up. Well Thai Cafe did that. They managed to turn it into a soup. It even came out in a large bowl with what I would call a broth and not a sauce. To top it off it was super salty. I took about 8 bites and decided to leave as I had lost my appetite. I was hoping the waitress would ask how my meal was. She never did so I didn't provide any feedback to the quality of the meal. Okay, have been here twice now and can DEFINITELY say I'm a fan. The Tom Yum and Hot & Sour soups are very good - the Tom Yum has a nice kick to it, the way I like it, and especially helpful when you have a bad cold. The Prik Khing was pretty good, slightly different flavor profile than what I was used to out west. Wish they used Blue Lake string beans though - these short little stubbies were only okay. My second time here I got the egg drop soup - I wouldn't recommend this. However, I would recommend the Pad See-Iw. That was damn good. I had to work hard not to eat it all in one sitting... needless to say when I went to eat the "leftovers" later, there were barely two bites left!
