We ordered a small vegetable soup for starters (from vegetable section of the menu). I really liked it and thought the spiciness was perfect (we went with medium spice which is higher than mild but lower than hot) We shared the duck dish from the grill section and the green curry with chicken from the curries section. Both come with white rice. I liked the green curry more, although both were good. I highly recommend you SKIP dessert, they were below average. We ordered the fried banana and the mango dessert. The ice cream that came with both dishes were your average grocery ice cream but it was very cold that we had trouble eating it because it was hard. The sticky rice with the mango wasn't sweet as expected but felt more of your main dishes rice. Overall good restaurant and highly recommend sticking with the curries and skipping the dessert

Seating options are good, inside can be a touch crowded during busy periods, though their outdoor seating is brilliant on a sunny day - If you are a taller individual target an outdoor seat with metal legs as opposed to the black plastic variety as the latter seem to be about an inch too high for the height of their tables. Cafe Cuba is one of my absolute favourites for atmosphere, perfect for an informal gathering with friends, the Cuban Marxist Revolutionary vibe is evident in the Art, Decor and in the names of some food items (Marx Slice). One can imagine Fidel or Guevara sitting comfortably in a corner plotting revolution over a Vege Bene. Unfortunately for Cafe Cuba there is absolutely no consistency in the quality of their coffee, sometimes it is great, other times it is truely terrible. Today was one of those terrible occasions, the Long Black was so damn bitter it had to be replaced and the replacement was equally bitter - It truely is a shame given how simple it is to purge a coffee machine in order to extract a decent Long Black with the full bodied flavour one craves (which I tend to tip for). This place is strange and with the menu being mostly burgers, the prices are laughable. Owner/chef/manager sat at tables with customers the entire time. He needs to be in the kitchen cooking better food. This place needs to retrain the servers and deserves a good menu overhaul. Definitely not worth the price. Won't be back.

I have a dear friend who I graduated from high school in Mississippi over 50 years ago who lives outside Palmerston North after retiring from a 40 year teaching career there in New Zealand. She lives alone in a rural area and raises goats. I had the bright idea that I would like to send her a gift card to dine out with a typical American hamburger experience and with YELP I was able to find, lo and behold, that the California chain of Carl's Jr which we have in Mississippi as Hardee's, has many locations all over New Zealand. There is also a McDonald's there but who treats a friend to a dinner at McDonald's, unless there are children involved? I will have to admit, though, that all my friends do drink coffee at McDonald's in the States which is very, very good and an exceptional bargain for seniors at $.69. I notice from their website Carl's Jr has some seasonal special burgers that are a little far-fetched for my imagination. Anyone who wants a highly rated American burger would be advised to stick to the Big Carl or Original Thickburger before trying any of the exotic concoctions. It seems that gift cards have not yet reached the level of popularity in NZ that they have in the states so I contacted Carl's Jr to see if they had something equivalent. They have a contact form on their website at http://www.carlsjr.co.nz/contact-us/ or you can just email them directly at: Feedback.CJ@rbd.co.nz Their customer service people informed me they do have gift vouchers in any denomination which are similar to gift cards in function but are not reloadable or as flexible since they have to be used for the full face value at time of purchase. Breaking a $50 gift certificate into 5 x $10 is a good idea for your recipient's flexibility. They do take American credit cards and the credit card company handles all the currency exchange which is a great thing. They charge $5 for postage or courier as they call it. A $50 NZ gift plus postage cost me $34 US so it was a great bargain and had the additional benefit of making me feel like the big spender. For those used to the speed of light in internet transactions, plan ahead. While the people at Carl's Jr. were exceptionally nice and accommodating, the process took about 3 weeks. I will ask my friend to report back on her dining experience and post an update to this review at a later date.

Your standard "mom and pop" shop with a choice of: takeaway Chinese or western European fast food…read moredishes. Clearly a fusion of "east meets west" in Palmerston North, and the food doesn't necessarily go "south" from here. I had low expectations and I came out pleasantly surprised.
