The Derwentwater Arms is set in the village of Calver. Having visited this place pre-qype days, and…read morereally liked the food and the atmosphere, we returned this summer to find that the quality is still just as good. The front entrance to the Derwentwater Arms is up some rather steep steps, which are punctuated by terraced areas with outside seating, perfect for a drink on a summer's evening. There is also a disabled entrance at the back. The pub is divided into a substantial bar area, selling real ales and a good variety of wines, and two restaurant areas. One of which looks over the entrance steps to the village of Calver and the stunning countryside beyond. The food menu is found on two big chalk boards, featuring many local and seasonal dishes, including lots of seafood, fish and vegetarian dishes. Plumping for two distinctively different main courses, chicken with a brie and bacon stuffing, and sea bass with pak choi, the two of us found both meals very flavoursome and filling. The meal was accompanied with a good range of vegetables including courgettes and red cabbage, and buttered new potatoes. A good range of desserts as well, the homemade baked apple pie and the lemon tart were very tasty. A great meal, just as good as we had remembered. Best to book though, the Derwentwater is a popular place, people tend to come back again and again. Particularly busy from mid week onwards.

We were seated really quickly and I have to say I love the booths that are meant to look like boats. They are clearly made for large groups, but I really wanted to sit in one :). The menu has something for everyone... so if you aren't a fan of seafood, you won't be left out. Really the menu looked similar to a pub menu with mixed grills, burgers, and pie, but they also had some enticing salads and vegetarian options. There was a bit of confusion on who our waiter/waitress was, but eventually our order was taken. Since we were probably both getting fish and chips, we decided to have the Admiral's Platter which serves two. It comes with two pieces of fish, a bowl of chips, calamari, and a trio of prawns. It was beautifully presented and looked delicious. The fish was good and we liked the prawns (I especially liked the breaded ones... it was like it had a coconut breading). The chips were quite soggy and weren't very warm and the calamari wasn't very crispy on the outside... in fact it looked a bit oil logged. However, we were quite full on just the fish and prawns alone. The take away experience was not as great. This place is clearly a very popular place with the locals, which means that the queue can be quite long. People were standing all over the place, so it was difficult to find the queue, there were people cutting the queue... it was really more hassle than it was worth. The fish and chips were nice, but I think we are going to stick to our usual place for now.

I love this place!…read more I was recommended by the tourist info centre and was glad I made the visit, as now everytime I visit Chesterfield be it with friends or family, this is my number one for snacks, lunch and especially the desserts :D. As I go there as my regular outlet, I have spoken to many customers and observed as the staff cater to everyones needs, be it coeliacs, vegetarians and even vegans. The food has fantastic presentation and such high standards are kept even when very busy. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. All food is freshly made (and you can tell) and the coffees are exceptional, freshly ground, and prepared to your order. The staff are keen to help with any special requests or dietary requirements and will cater to your needs and substitute any dislikes in order to make you entirely satisfied with your meal, beverage and overall experience. I would recommend Stephensons to anybody, as they never fail to make your visit pleasant and enjoyable.

The food is fantastic - really good, high quality and tasty. Great atmosphere and lovely, light rooms that are nicely decorated. Only slight issue is that its up several flights of stairs (a very impressive staircase though!) so if someone had mobility problems, they might find it tricky. Otherwise, I couldn't fault it!
