I am surprised the previous reviewer only tried the dessert and not the food (which is excellent)! We discovered it one night whilst walking to another Thai place (we were also drawn in by the dessert stand and the tuk tuk) and have been back many times since. The food is fresh, spicy and the atmosphere is great and funky and non-pretentious. We especially like the whole fried fish (which comes with a great dipping sauce). The duck curry (served in a pineapple) was also very good. You pay for the desserts separately from the stand and they are the very authentic (plenty of coconut milk, sugar and they are nice and sticky). Also did I mention we once went there with a group of 9 people and had plenty of Singhas and the bill was only $300?

Lovely ambience like eating on the streets of Thailand.

I felt like I was on the streets of Thailand as the weather was a little hot and muggy with a flight breeze blowing through the restaurant. Nice ambient and modern kitsch. Nice soft lighting. Hard wooden chairs. Bathroom needs a little sprucing up. But works fine. Service was quick, friendly and accommodating for our special all veggie versions of a few dishes. We had the fish sauce chicken wings $9/ drunken noodles $13, papaya salad $9, and oyster sauce beef $22. All were very flavorful. And beautifully presented. Ask for the side condiment dishes to add more fish sauce. Jalapeño vinegar or chilis as needed. The dessert cart front was very cool and unique like ordering off the street of Thailand. The desserts are not overly sweet but perfect in tasting ingredients and spices. I enjoyed the black sesame pudding square/ rice pudding with banana/ and the lovely fried onions on top of some orange looking dessert! Sorry. Couldn't remember what fruit or veggie that made that one, but quite tasty! $2 each. Very authentic. I Am a fan!

Khaosan was a trend setter on Pitt st, where cheap Thai food was aplenty. But with trendy decor, tuktuk at the front, and streetstall style dessert offering, you know this was different. The food is just as cheap but the menu is brave, with lots on offer and flavours that satisfy the tastebuds. No white people Asian food here, its sweet spicy sour and salty, just how it should be done. We had the intestines, pad se ew, som tum, chicken satay, stir fry pork belly and crazy chicken. Tip. The chicken wings are individual servings, we chose the crazy chicken which is a plate of wingettes. The som tum with pickled raw crab is a must try but watch the spiciness ;) The Thai ice tea is a must have as it will be the only thing that can sooth all that chilli ;) The only downside is with such great Thai food, the service was overwhelmed and very slow, and miscommunication on orders can happen easily.

This is one of my favourite Thai restaurants in Sydney. The food is always great, full of authentic Thai flavours. Those lime, coconut, chilli flavours are enough to send your taste buds off. My favourite dish here is the whole fried fish, I've ordered it several times and it's always good. They have a great Prawn Pad Thai (they're not skimpy on the prawns which is always good!) I find some of their dishes too spicy (but if you're a chilli fan you'll have no issues) The cocktails are tasty, a bit more on the fruity end as appose to the alcoholic end, which I love, but others might not! The decor is quiet nice with a Tuk Tuk which adds to the whole authentic feel of this restaurant. On the way out they have a dessert stand where you can just grab takeaway, definitely worth doing! Overall... I love this place, and come here a lot when I'm in the area, authentic Thai for such a great price!

    Groupon seafood platter

I would recommend that people NOT purchase the seafood platter groupon. The so called seafood platter is all deep fried items except for the mussels. Tye soft shell cram was extremely fishy and the rest of the fried seafood all just tasted bland and all the same. The only saving grace was the Tom yum soup that each of us received as the "one entree per person" no choice in entree. And also the whole sweet and sour fish that came out at the end. All in all, even with the groupon, I don't think it's worth the price. Verdict- will not be back

My experience at Thanon Khaosan was via its dessert stand at the front of the restaurant, which lured me in on a saturday afternoon. I have a love of glutinous rice desserts and of these they have plenty. Then they have Thai jelly desserts made with coconut milk and others made from pandan. Like my other experiences with ethnic desserts I wish I knew the name of them so I can order them specifically but lets just say all of the ones I had at Thanon Khaosan were delicious. The restaurant itself is dark due to restaurant facing east and surrounded by the high rise apartments on Pitt St, but its livened up with multi-coloured lights and the colourful tuk tuk at the front. I must try the food next - for anyone who has tried it, let me know if its any good! :)

It was ok but not that good. Portions a little bit small. And there are better restaurants nearby.

The food here is actually decent but the staff are incredibly rude. They even go out of their way to avoid eye contact with you.

I was even allowed to drive their Tuk Tuk around the block because I promised I had driven Tuk Tuks in Thailand.

Good grub food to get the Thai zest food on!…read more I like their flavorful Tom Yum Goong, extremely. One can tell with the ingredients used and the strong flavor used in the soup. Chicken noodle soup was spot on. I think I ate too much two hours before, so my stomach wasn't feeling well at all when I over ordered here! I got excited on their 5 dollar grubs and Tom Yum soup. It's like a hole in the wall kind of place. Service was great and I like the down to earth vibes here. My eyes are bigger than my stomach, as usual. Got my yummy Thai craving on!

You're gonna need it, this is authentic Thai, they don't scrimp on the spice. This used to be a very regular lunchtime haunt for me because it wasn't very busy and @ $7.90 for my favourite dish (which is a generous serve), it was almost impossible to avoid at least once a week. However it seems that word has gotten around because it can be very busy at lunch times. I usually opt for pork pad krapao cos it's a great serve but have tried other dishes too. The pork two ways (belly and bbq) is a bigger dish but is also outside their $8 lunch sweetspot! The only real gripe I have with the place is that the seating outside attracts smokers. Most people hate smokers whilst they are eating, and it's probably illegal but you know what inconsiderate ign'ant peeps are like, they just don't care.

It's surprising what you can find when exploring your own city. I decided to take a different…read morestreet in Chinatown Sydney and stumbled upon this restaurant. From the outside it looked very clean and inviting with walls decorated with vibrant Thai street art. There were many patrons inside eating which is also a good sign that the food must be good. I decided to give it a try and I'm so pleased I did! The place has a Bain-Marie setup on entry for takeaway. You can order from here to dine in also but the price will differ. It is cheaper to takeaway. The menu is very extensive listing more than 100 Thai regional specialties. The menu has several different styles of noodle soups 'Boat Noodle Soup' and 'Tom Yum Sukhothai Noodle Soup' ranging from the spicy-sour tom yum soup to tom luad moo (soup made with a clear broth as well as pork and vegetables). Under the heading 'Hot Pot Set' you can order the Thai Southeast street food 'Chim Chum', a spicy sour broth with different meats, seafood and fresh herbs such as galangal, sweet basil, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves all cooked together and served in a small clay pot. There are refreshing papaya and vermicelli noodle salads, stir-fries, fried fish, hotpots and for the ultimate sweet ending, sweet doughnuts served with delicious Pandan sauce (Pa-Tong-Go) or deep-fried banana. I chose two of my all time favourites- Chicken Pad Thai and a Chicken Cashew Nut stir fry. The portion size was huge and worth every cent! The taste was simply amazing and better than what I have received at my other favourite, more expensive Thai restaurants in Sydney. Wow I now have found a new favourite Thai restaurant.
