I seriously spend two hours a day on this train commuting between Bed Stuy and Washington Heights. In the morning this train runs every ten minutes or less, once I get past West 42nd Street all the hipsters, wall street bankers, and tourists have exited my commute is express from West 59th Street to West 125th Street. This train line is iconic, Duke Ellington composed a song about it. It's urban, gritty, and hip. It's stops in the Rockaways, JFK, the theater district, downtown Brooklyn, and Harlem. It is the longest train line in the MTA covering over 30 miles of The Big Apple. Now let's be honest this is New York so you will have the occasional hip hop dance crew "Showtime" swinging from the poles and passing around the hat and an homeless dude asking for spare change claiming hunger, then viciously roles his eyes at you because you offered an freshly made, still wrapped Subway sandwich (true story), but seriously this is NYC and it comes with the territory. I'm seldom late for work. I always leave at least 15 minutes early and I bring headphones to listen to Drake or Frank Sinatra. Four stars because weekend service sucks on the A. Weekend services sucks throughout the MTA.

Love how quickly it moves during the morning rush hours. Faster than the 2 train for sure. Wish the A left me on 7th avenue. Unfortunate that it goes local in the evenings. But that's the mta's fault.

The A train has been my chariot since I set up shop in this fair city, and as long as I remain a west side boy (in other words, forever), the A will always be there to carry me home. A friend of mine once referred to it as "old reliable" and it certainly gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling - like an old beat up pair of jeans that fit you just so. It's not glamorous, it's not always fast (i'd say at least 2 weekends a month these days it's running local) it's not even very clean, but I can't help but smile whenever I see that big blue circle coming down the track. And Duke Ellington wrote a song about it! I mean, come on, people - that alone is worth 4 stars!

I live off of this subway line so I take it quite frequently. The only the subway line that comes and goes from JFK so you always see travelers on this line. It also runs both underground and above ground. Runs from JFK to Downtown Brooklyn and then up the West side of Manhatten into Harlem. If you are taking this line to JFK, remember you need to be on the Far Rockaway line. The A trains split in different directions at Rockway Blvd. One, Lefferts Blvd, goes to Lefferts Blvd and the other, Far Rockaway goes to Aquaduct, JFK and Far Rockaway.

Back in the…read moreday, I rode the IRT Lexington Ave local train from Canal St to 96th St (and back) every day for 6 years to and from school. The ride was typically 1/2 hour long (barring delays) starting at 7:30am, since it was a local train. I can still remember all 9 stops along the way. The 1/2 hr ride was also good for finishing up last minute homework, reading assignments or just a quick nap. Sometimes we would meet friends along the way that got on at intermediate stops. As the train went uptown, it gets more and more crowded, so we were lucky to get on towards the beginning of the route to get seats. Back then, there was no air-conditioning, just a fan built into the roof of the subway car and during the summers, it was unbearable. If you sat at the end of the car, you can open up the sliding door, just to get a breeze. It was also fun to ride in the front car next to the motorman's compartment and look out the front window as the train is rolling through the tunnels at 30 mph.

Let's say you are trying to go from 1st stop to uptown like 125th street station, it might take 35 or 40 mins on this local train and it can be less crowded than an express train and you know what, maybe it Is possible to get a seat as well. It does get crowded ( depending on the time of day or night) though as well during rush hour especially at busy stops like Union Square 14th street, 42nd street grand central station or 86 TH street ( one of the busiest).

There was plenty of room to stow our bags, and the seats were comfortable. The four-seater table group in the middle of the train car was pretty cramped for leg room on the way back, but other than that, it was very pleasant as a passenger. (It gave me plenty of time to work on these Yelp reviews!) The outlets in the seats worked perfectly. The bathroom was quite spacious to accommodate wheelchairs. Some passengers were a confused as to how to flush with the hand wave by the toilet (gross), and I absolutely hated the finicky hand drier. However, the fact that bathroom facilities are available that you couldn't get on a personal car road trip is really nice! We sat in the quiet car at the back of the train both ways. People were respectful of observing the silence throughout the ride, so if you'd like to nap or just enjoy some peace, I recommend the quiet car. We really enjoyed the ride and are already planning our next group trip with the Acela Express!

But there is a nice Cafe car and plenty of restrooms in every car. The seats are individual bucket seat style, so they are roomy. The overhead compartments were large and easy to open. Because Amtrak has changed my reservation three times in three months. I booked my trip to Boston early because it was July 3rd and America's 250th so I figured the train may be crowded. Since then, I keep getting canceled trains and car reassignments. I don't understand why as these are trains that run daily. Additionally, the emails give me a link to use in the app if I would like view the changes or make other changes. The links never work! Hence, my ongoing communication with customer service. I found out this last time that I can't access the app until the changes are confirmed. Isn't that the point of the link in the email? At this point I'm ready to book a refundable backup airline reservation as I'm getting leery that Amtrak may just cancel everything at the last minute.

It connects over 500 destinations, including big cities like Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Portland, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Washington, D.C. and more. One time I thought I wanted to arrive in NYC by train from Miami Florida. It's the old romantic movies I had seen creating visions of glamour and excitement as you are welcomed in Penn Station. Even though I was being met by my daughter I anticipated the glamour of arrival. I also remembered my train ride from Florida to New York with my Mother when I was little. I had so much fun and my mother had motion sickness the whole way! As I should have known a trip of that length would be uncomfortable unless you had a sleeping car. The train was crowded too because I decided to attempt this in July. All the kids were out of school and going to theme parks. The bathroom became filthy in time and the children impatient with the ride. The parents impatient with the children. I sat with my headphones music blasting and looked out the window during daylight hours. The experience was miserable on the return trip also because I cried all the way back to Florida. I had plenty of time during that train ride to make a decision and a plan to move back to NYC. The experience is not one I want to repeat. We were held up in Florida by railroad crossings during Florida tropical downpours. In Washington D.C. we were held up by train problems and train traffic trying to get in and out. When I finally arrived my daughter greeted me with a look of chagrin because she couldn't find me. This was pre cell phones. By the time I arrived I was traveling a full 24 hours at least. From then on I took a plane! I'm not saying I wouldn't try one of their travel packages for a short excursion. I do think car travel is still my favorite!
