I have always wanted to visit Opus. When a couple of friends in the JQ mentioned their market menu, I figured maybe I could afford to visit after all. So, last Friday me and the other half were stuck for dinner. We wanted to go out somewhere nice, but not break the bank in a spectacular manner (as we are entering into wedding prep season). The market menu genuinely makes Opus affordable. Available all day Monday to Friday and between 6pm - 7pm on Saturdays; it's very reasonable at £10 for a main course, £14 for two courses or the full three for £16. We booked a table for 6pm (on the day - which was handy) and mooched on down to grab our dinner. We arrived a little bit early, but the friendly staff explained that they were still printing out the menu's for that nights meals and offered us a drink whilst we waited. We were sat before 6pm, so it wasn't too long. The wine list is extensive, but not cheap. We went for the £24 Viognier option (which wasn't the cheapest at £17.95) but I do love a good bottle of the stuff, so it was worth it. For starter, me and Dan both went for the Duck dish. This was gorgeously presented and was a suitable size for a substantial starter. The flavours were a great mix and I honestly have no complaints at all. For my main, I went for the "Fish of the day" which was Hake. Again, this was a light and fluffy fish dish with every ingredient complimenting the overall taste. The mash was amazing (the texture was perfect) and the peas tasted so fresh, they could have been handpicked that day. After those two courses we were quite full, but for another £2 - I wanted dessert (you'd be a fool not too, right?). I had spotted the trifle on the menu and knew what I would have even before they bought the menus over. Again... every layer was a joy in it's own right and the taste of them together was a sensation. The food was faultless, the service was pleasant, friendly and non judgemental (I had worried it was going to be a bit posh) and the venue is gorgeous. Our bill came to around £65 - which we were happy to pay for 2x 3 course meals, tip and a lovely bottle of wine. This place is highly recommended for a celebration.

This is a large spacious, light and airy restaurant that's been in Birmingham for 6 years now. The only downside for me it's in the heart of the business district. The big upside for Opus is that they are in the heart of the business district! The lucrative lawyer money is no doubt their bread and butter revenue (excuse the pun) but what makes me go back is the excellent service and beautifully made food.

We had to request the full menus, by flagging someone down, and it was said they thought they had left them on the seating, I presumed this by the way she tried to look behind where my wife was sitting. Waited ages for anyone to return to ask for drinks. In the end I had to flag someone down. The waiter wasn't familiar with the drinks, and I decided upon one that was shown on the website, but this wasn't available. I was offered something that was considered an equivalent. I'd request a mild, and was told the equivalent was an amber ale. Not it is not. In the end as the chap had no clue, I went to the bar. The drinks arrive, and the ladies weren't given the opportunity to try the wine, especially as it wasn't a screw top bottle. The bottle wasn't opened at the table. No ice bucket or other device was brought with the bottle of wine. Again, someone had to be flagged down to take our food order (more later). There was a special request on the order, and this hadn't been communicated back to the kitchen. So the person who had given the menus (think it was the duty manager) came back to check. Starters were brought and were very nice (listed later). My wife and I had finished our starters, but one of our guests hadn't, someone, not seen before began to remove the plates. Then realised one person hadn't finished, but still removed the plates. No sooner had she done this, then another unknown, came with the mains. No apology, nor an initial query to see if we were ready for our mains. I had to request knives and forks as these had been taken away with the starters which had been used. I had ordered fillet steak and cooked medium, as I do if I cannot see the age of the steaks stated. This was no way a fillet steak : tough, with gristle, I had taken two bites and struggled to chew. I flagged down the person who looked like the manager, and queried the steak. She went away and returned and said that the chef had confirmed it was a fillet and 28 days' old. I commented that if it was a clear day then we'd we see a pig flying south for winter. Yes, I was annoyed at this point. She then said, in a rather rude tone, twice: "What do you want me to do about it?" I said take it away, and I'll order something else, and felt I had to ask for the menu again. I ordered fish and chips. It just felt like a whole series of episodes of calamity. One guest wanted two starters, that is one as a main. This was explained when ordering, but it got lost on its trip to the kitchen. Even though we were assured that it wasn't a problem. One of our other guests struggles to eat due to having had their larynx removed. So, we did ask if he could have a baked potato with cheese. The waiter didn't think that this was impossible, but he returned to say that it wasn't possible. My other guest said was it really impossible to put a potato in a microwave for 10 minutes? Still it was impossible. One of my guests were happy with their meals, do, that is why I have given two stars. After the mains we asked if we wanted to look at the dessert menu. We did not, but it didn't stop a second person coming and asking again. The poor service is down to poor training. The steak is down to a poor chef accepting poor meat off a poor butcher. The duty manager is down to poor knowledge of customer service. No tip was left. The Winged Spur itself has a small carpark, a couple of tables outside for the warm weather, and a good fire inside for the chilly weather. The pub serves a wide and somewhat startling range of fish dishes, all listed on blackboards around the bar. There are bar snacks available at lunchtimes, and the Sunday lunch menu includes options for those like my OH who don't like roast lunches. The portions are substantial, and it would be a brave person who attempted three courses. Having said that, the pace of lunch can be as leisurely as you wish, so there is plenty of time to make the acquaintance of the next table's spaniel and let your stomach get used to the idea of a pud.

Not simply being directly on the canal, just along from the Mailbox and Broad Street this cafe-come-bar is just the most adorable thing. Quirky to the point of completely impractical. There is plenty of seating crammed inside this long but thin bar. Being a Saturday bankholiday afternoon it was indeed busy, but the Mrs and I squeezed in at lunchtime and didn't leave until our train was due early evening. There's simply so much choice for such a small venue. An array of Ales, Spirits and Ciders beyond your normal bar fodder I was thoroughly impressed. As the Mrs dosnt drink - and has the most amazing sweet tooth she had a coffee and cake deal. Lovely fresh coffee and homemade coffee cake at a steal of £3. I stuck to the organic cider which washed down the dreary, cold and rainy canal side view outside the window. The several real fires around the place, multiplying its cuteness. The two girls behind the bar were fast an efficient and dealt with the surprisingly large crowds at the bar with good humor. After a few ciders and refusing to move from our cosy spot we take advantage of the great vegetarian choices and get the lasagna. The portion sizes are small, but the price does correspond with it. It's great for filling that hole that cider had created. It was also lovely with a bit of salad and chips on the side. I'd only wished we'd came here for breakfast because it's the only place I've ever seen faken on the menu!!!! (faken = fake bacon). If I lived here, I'd be back again and again. *If I had read the filtered reviews before I came here, I probably would've thought twice - but you never know if it was filtered for a reason - either way I've rated it on my experience.
