FAITH'S CLASSES LITERALLY CHANGED MY LIFE. I think of her as my secret weapon, and yet I don't want her to be a secret at all! I wish everyone knew about her just so that you too could gain the tools to best share your gifts and navigate this crazy town. My acting training background: I studied acting in college, many different methods but moved here still not knowing anything about how Hollywood operates. I took a bunch of classes in the major studios my first few years in LA, I learned some useful stuff but never quite wanted to drink the kool aid anywhere. Three and a half years ago I found Faith and I have been going once, at times twice, a week ever since. Class sizes are small which means we get so much time with Faith, a refreshing change from the 10 minutes of performance time I was used to in the other studios. She caters her coaching to whatever level you enter in at, she can see what you need and give you exercises and materials to directly help with that. It feels like magic to see how a minor adjustment she gives an actor unlocks something amazing in their work, it is so inspiring we are often gasping in class. One of the main techniques she teaches that has been INVALUABLE to my craft and career, is how to get OUT of my head and INTO my body. She guides us to understanding where our emotions literally exist in our body in order to draw from them in real time (without having to drudge up real life past experiences that can take us out of the scene.) Another of her specialties, Faith is a speech pathologist and expert in dialects. She's coached so many amazing actors, like Marion Cotillard! She has immensely helped me with my voice, her voice work in class is so incredible I could write a whole other review on it. Faith also emphasizes extensive script analysis, she guides us to finding the real problem of the scene, the event of the scene, what the character truly wants, the obstacles, the actions in order to get it (if they ever do), etc. Over time it has become second nature for me to find these things that used to feel like a puzzle I had to carefully take apart and put back together. Now it feels like I can tackle any script in a short amount of time in order to nail auditions. And boyyyy my acting career has improved night and day from before I started with Faith. I am so grateful, that I NEED to spread the word. I know this review got long so I will leave you with this, Faith is not just an acting coach. She truly supports and believes in her students, she is SO giving of her time inside and outside of class. She not only gave me the TOOLS to succeed, but she continuously empowers me to share my gifts as an actor and artist. She is an artist herself in every sense of the word, unlike many other teachers I've met along the way. She gets us, cause she's one of us. I've been working with Faith for the past year and a half. I was referred to Faith by my sister who has been coming to her since 2012 and swears she changed her life - and she did! After several teachers, I've finally found the best one! I don't normally write reviews, but I'm so relieved to have finally found Susan Rumor. Her singing class is amazing. I've expanded my range, opened up my chest voice, improved my tone, gained confidence, am emotionally resonant and transparent with my voice, and I finally have a really cool, professional sound that is all my own! When I came to Susan a year ago, I was so daunted that I cried throughout my first lesson! hahaha.. Now I'm singing on an album and have been asked to sing on a film score as well as record for TV, and best of all, I'm working on a solo album of my own! I'm finally blooming beautifully as an artist, and without Susan, it would have been a long, hard, lonely path. Susan is an expert at working with both the highly technical minutia and encouraging us to develop as artists as well. Most teachers, I have found, tend to focus more on one aspect, but Susan covers it all with ease, inspiration and lots of encouragement. She has the most developed ear of anyone I've ever worked with. She can hear a vocalist and instantly know how to get that same sound, and she's great at articulating that knowledge, so we can master the technique as well. Here's how her singing class is structured: Check in: She always wants to know how our week of practice has been, what breakthroughs and challenges we have faced, and how she can best be of service to us today. Breath work: Susan leads us through relaxing breathing exercises that help our instrument release tension, so our breath can best support our voice. We also do physical stretches to free up our face, tongue, neck, soft pallet, back, etc. This part of class is so yummy, like a good massage. I always feel great after this. Vocal Warm-Up: Susan tailors the scale work to the students in the class. She has a background not only in music, but also in speech pathology, which helps her hear our placement very specifically so we develop our voices in a healthy way that will support our singing for the rest of our lives. Her vocal exercises are fun, and each one has a specific purpose for opening up certain resonant chambers in our body. It's really cool to feel my body opening up to a larger, fuller sound every time. Song Work: We each work with Susan one on one on a song of our choice in a professional recording booth. Rather than teaching us a certain style, we pick the artistic direction we want to go in, and we develop our own unique style with Susan's help. She is great about checking in with us about our goals for each song or vocalist we study. The idea is not to sound like someone else. We learn from our favorite singers in order to master their technique and make it our own. This, to me, is the heart of the class. I love this part. I get to learn from all of my classmates. A lot of times, they have the same challenges that I have. Sometimes it's hard to hear exactly what I'm challenged with because I'm too close to it, but I can hear it more clearly in other people. Speaking of people, Susan tends to attract really great people. They are all very sweet, totally supportive, and very committed to growing vocally. It's so inspiring to be a part of a positive group that "gets" it. Committing to any creative pursuit takes courage to be open, and this group not only gets that, but is also so genuinely encouraging and accepting that it feels totally natural to blossom. Susan cares about us fully expressing ourselves with complete freedom, and she celebrates each and every one of us. I've been in other classes where people were competitive and overly critical. This is the total opposite. We're extremely supportive of each other, and we all cheer each other on. I've made friends for life in this class who pass along opportunities and ideas for my career, and I do the same for them. I didn't mean to be so long-winded! hahaha. I'm so very grateful for both Susan and the community she attracts. This class has helped me expand not only my voice but my life as well. When I have come home to listen to my lesson, I have been blown away by the difference in the sound. The First Time I Susan Rumor was at the AGAPE International Spiritual Center Healing and Reveling Meditation and Service on Sunday December 28th, 2014 at 6pm in which Rev Michael Bernard Beckwith said "You want to be there".
