Oneonta has become in a way a town of commercial contrasts. Back in the day when I first darkened its doorstep there wasn't the strip over on the other side of the river, the cookie cutter had yet to deposit its flavorless vanilla wafer of big box retail on the Oneonta-Davenport road. Mind, I recognize the utility that WalmartDick'sBJsBurgerKingMcDonalds brings to areas, particularly those that feel the effects of Big Agriculture putting the press-down on a once vibrant farm economy. Jobs ensue and everyday low prices abound and this is by no means a bad thing. This reality offsets the uninspiring aesthetic and the automobilecentric experience for me to degrees, while simultaneously having me want to get the hell away from it as quickly as I possibly can and head to Main Street. Oneonta has a sweet little downtown full of buildings that have seen the history of its commerce and a different day. The offerings of Route 23 have sucked some of the life blood from what used to be the economy's center, but a walk even on a chilly day proves that this town wears a garland of garlic and has a cross in its pocket, as the vampire isn't having its way. The Autumn Cafe is a perfect example. Set near the eastern end of Main Street the Autumn welcomes like a beacon and a pot-belly stove. So cozy and inviting from the outside, so lovely and delicious and chill inside. Not hipster (hipster isn't spoken in upstate NY, though if it were it certainly wouldn't be turned away by Autumn), a little organic but not cloyingly so, local but not in a jukebox turns off when you walk in kind of way. The stamped metal ceiling reminds me of the Lower East Side. The food is uniformly delicious and thoughtfully prepared. The dishes are made by kind people who care about what you eat. Unlike the big boxes and the eateries around them, Autumn feeds you as if they'd actually like you to live until you can visit again. I had me a lamb burger with their housemade tahini sauce (make a lamb sound). Adam and my mom had fishcakes and let me have a bite and they were as delicious as the others who've written before me attest. Pops had a poached salmon salad and I wondered if he was going to lick the plate and he didn't and while I would have understood I was at the same time kind of glad he let it be. Sadly, my visits to town are only two or three times a year. If I lived closer I'd be here every day. Thank you Autumn, for helping keep the vampires at bay. read more

I have been here several times for brunch in the past and have had a wonderful experience each time. This evening, my family and I came for dinner and the service was very slow, I was very disappointed. The inside was empty and the back deck was half full, and everything came out super slow. 20 minutes for our first round of drinks to come, almost 40 for appetizers. We asked for a second round of drinks when our dinners arrived and our drinks came out after we were all finished eating. Our appetizers (flatbread special and scallops) were also cold. My recent visit to Autumn Cafe left a sour taste in my mouth, and it wasn't the food. The service provided by the owner/waitress was shockingly rude and unprofessional, turning what should have been an enjoyable lunch into an unpleasant one. Upon seating us I asked her in a cordial manner for a table nearby the table she was going to seat us. In a loud and rude manner, she replied "NO" without an explanation, to which other customers actually turned to look. As she was leaving, I stood near the table when she notched me as she was passing through and did not acknowledge or excuse herself. I had to model proper manners by saying "excuse me". After a few minutes she sat 3 people on the table I had asked for , which could have seated 8 of us. Our party were forced to split apart into two tables. Every time my parents come to see me I'm school they always go to the autum cafe! Sometimes it's hard to find a place without loud college kids, and the Autum cafe is perfect! Okay so every time I have been here the service has been horrible. I have been there busy and slow times and my food took absurdly long both. The food itself is okay I guess. The pastrami in the Reuben was chewy and the sandwich as a whole was meh. My friend's blt had soggy bacon. However, the steak salad is very good. Odd experience. We were the second table in there when the restaurant opened and the waitress was rude and reprimanded us for moving to a table 6ft away that was away from the main walk through path of the out door patio. She didn't even say hello, she just made us uncomfortable for no reason. Didn't even try the food. Staff should be friendly. Hostess also rolled her eyes when the waitress told her the "drama" that apparently we created. Wouldn't go back or recommend just for service alone. read more

The autumn café has been under new ownership for the past fourteen months (after a closure of about a year). They now have a full bar. Prices are quite reasonable and the food is often delicious. We were on a college tour with my daughter, and chose the autumn café for lunch. Very cool vibe inside this place, but due to Covid restrictions, we were seated outside on the large deck which was inviting and very comfortable. Their menu consists of complex and well thought out dishes. They also have extensive beverage and dessert menus, which we did not get to sample. I had the special Korean beef bowl, and the flavors and textures were excellent. A very generous portion of perfectly cooked and seasoned steak topped a bowl of fried rice, golden raisins, crunchy micro greens and a kimchi aioli, which tied everything together. My wife had the BLT on sour dough bread with a sundried tomato aioli. She raved about it, especially the fresh bread. My daughter had the grilled cheese with bacon, which she had high praise for. Service was relaxed but punctual, and our waiter friendly and shared his local knowledge of the town and school. As for the prices, a really good value for the portion and the creativity that is put into the food. read more

Went here with a group of 8 and had a blast! The environment of this cafe was full of life and joy. We were all seated right as we entered and held up our reservation with no issues. Our waitress was wonderful in showing us the Valentine's Day special menu and what each item on the list had with great description. Only thing I was a little put off of was there were no price labels on the special item lists that the majority of the table ordered. Last time I made that mistake I spent way more than I was comfortable with and the meal was nowhere near special. Therefore I went with a the Cuban Sandwich from standard menu to play it safe and it looked gorgeous. Wish I took a better photo but I was so excited to dig in. The bread had a perfect crunch and texture as well as the flavor of the meats inside with the mustard and pickles made for a great experience. My girlfriend went for one of the specials which was stuffed French toast with a type of special cream cheese filling iirc. The portion sizes on those were INSANE. She tackled them down with no problem and I did help along the way. It has the ideal texture that I go for my French toast which consisted of a nice crispy outside and a soft inner that blended so well when the filling hit the taste buds. The rest of the table ordered various meals such as the velvet pancakes, omelettes and some more. We all found the house fries to be very salty which made us offer them up to the table. I've also read reviews about the service being a hit or miss but I didn't get a sense of that at all. One of our group asked if they had any fruit to go with the pancakes and they said they could not but they accommodated by giving her some plantains to try which she appreciated. Overall though this brunch was a success! I would definitely go back to this place once I visit Oneonta. This is a cafe you don't want to miss! read more

The pork was rock hard and broke the plastic utensils, the rice was tasteless and still hard and Kimchi.....well that was a sour hot mess that didn't go with the dish! This is only getting 2 stars because the food was very good. I was very upset with the service and seating here as we were pushed to the back corner of the patio where we barely got service. The woman who served us was very rude and didn't seem to know what she was talking about. Barely talked to us and seemed like she was in a bad mood. No, we aren't locals, and yes, we do attend one of the colleges nearby but just because we are young does not mean we aren't well paying customers. We expect to be treated like the adults we are and she seemed to treat us like a joke. I can't believe we tipped her as it was one of the worst service experiences I've had EVER. Next time we are trying the Plaza diner, as we are never coming back here. EDIT**** The owner has contacted me and offered a free meal on the house for my bad experience. I will definitely be giving this restaurant a second try, as the owners are correcting the problem and fixing it very generously! The old Autumn was my favorite place to get a meal in Oneonta. When it closed and sold I was skeptical but the new owners have done a great job. The place has a newer cleaner feel to it but the same ambiance and the food is really outstanding. This is the second time I've been in for brunch and both times have been great. I had the steak and eggs special (needed some bread to soak up the goodness) and a couple people I was with had the pork and rice bowl. My husband had the turkey mushroom madness - a holdover from the old menu that doesn't disappoint. The food took a little long to come out but it was busy and we didn't mind. There are no appetizers to share. All four times we went our food had no seasoning and was drab. The beet salad is miniature compared to its price. Soup had no flavor. I was really excited to try The Autumn Cafe and have to admit that I was very disappointed. I tried the Korean barbecue and it had absolutely no flavor. My friends tried the curry and chicken fajitas and they too were lacking in flavor and quality. There was no depth or balance to the food, it felt like every ingredient tasted the same. The outdoor seating was cute and comfortable and the servers were so sweet, but at the end of the day we go to a restaurant to eat good food, and that was not the case here. The menu seemed so promising but they definitely need to explore some spices! read more
