Since my original visit to Cartago, I've been back a few times and finally sampled the menu. It's small plates with German influence, that obviously go really well with beers! I ordered the currywurst, schnitzel and potato wedges to share with my friend. The currywurst is a stand out for me on the menu and on the plate. It looks great, topped with the perfect amount of sauerkraut, spicy ketchup and yogurt dressing, with a pickle on the side. The wedges are cut in a twist so they look a but fancier than the usual bowl of wedges, and the schnitzel comes with that yummy yogurt dip on the side too. The Kitchen is to the right of the bar, it's small so what they produce from there is very quite impressive. ************** If you live in Forest Heights and want a pint there was only one choice, now I feel spoiled with Cartago in the neighbourhood. The space is open with long windows all around so you can see right in and every time I've passed it's been pretty busy - a great sign! There are ample tables but the bar was too inviting! I was impressed with the beer selection, especially local breweries. I'm into that. They serve beers in fancy stemmed glasses that fit a bottle of beer perfectly. There is a small German inspired food menu and the bar tender advised that it's small but great quality food items.

I wanted to try to spot for a while... Definitely thought it was pretty cool. When I arrived at around five it was empty, but by about 5:36 PM it was jammed... Really love the food, and they have a ton of selection of draft beer. As you see from the picture the food was pretty awesome... I would call it almost like a German style beer house menu, and was great for sharing. Deafly coming back here for more of a cocktails and drinking night! The selection of sausages was also really tasty, cheese plate and meet play was really big too I love the portion sizes. They also have quite an extensive selection of bourbon with you but good. Definitely will be back

Perfect place to come with good company and gather around a table to truly socialize. Or, just come by yourself and hang at the expansive bar. The cocktail menu here is genuinely unique and seriously top quality. I'm pretty sure at Cartago I had the best cocktail I've had. The beer selection is vast and plenty of local options. There is also a decent selection of food, all classified as German street food. Zwick's pretzels, grilled cheese with sauerkraut, bratwurst, and quite a bit more. The decor and lighting is beautiful. The space is flooded with natural light during the day thanks to its floor to ceiling windows.

Another Saturday evening, another new spot to try. Cartago's the latest neighbourhood bar to open up shop. This ones in a bit of a random spot, the Forest Heights 'hood. The hours are great! Another spot open late that you can add to the list. The inside is modern with a very chill vibe. You're greeted to all their bottles of beer when you first walk in. We weren't sure how things work; no one came up to ask if we wanted to sit at the bar or a table. Would be nice if they did that. No biggie, we sat ourselves at the bar while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. The food menu is small but they've hand picked carefully where they source their foods. Pretzels from Zwick's and most things from K&K Foodliner. The drink menu is huge. There's five beers on draft (Blindman Brewery kettle sour was their current Alberta rotating tap), 74 types of beers, cocktails and a few wines. They're a beer focused bar so keep that in mind. Maybe it's because they've just opened but it would have been nice if the bartenders knew a bit more about the beers. Ours differed to checking out the bottle for info. Also interestingly, one of them claimed Dieu du Ciel as being the best brewery in the world. Bold words. Especially to two people that lived in Montreal before. - Rosee d'hibiscus (#29) ($7.00) - had this before from DDC. Lightly floral but easy to drink. - Lager (#74) ($7.00) - they were out of a few that I wanted to try so I ended up settling with a lager from Poland. Light. - Blood orange gose (#36) ($7.00) - wished there was more blood orange flavours to it but this was nice. Slightest bit of sourness to it. - Wit (#60) ($7.00) - this was from the Belgium section. Quite refreshing. Didn't even taste like a beer. Everyone loved it. - Red (#61) ($11.00) - another Belgian beer. M's had it before so we tried it. - Schnitzel fingers ($8.00) - these were surprisingly better than I expected. Nicely battered, good crunchy exterior and moist chicken inside. - Spätzle poutine ($8.00) - nice spin on the classic. Spätzle had a pleasant texture and they threw on some bean sprouts on top to make the dish less heavy. - 2x Grilled cheese Berlin ($10.00) - ham, edam cheese and sauerkraut. This was really good. Oozy cheese, bread perfectly toasted and the sauerkraut was a perfect combination with the ham. Get it! - Gemüse sandwich ($10.00) - this is their vegetarian option. Not bad but the grilled cheese wins hands down. - Schlutzkrapfen ($10.00) - half a dozen perogies but they're not homemade. I was pretty skeptical about getting it and my intuitions were right. Skip it. - 2x Currywurst ($10.00) - M's favourite for sure. So good we had to order a second round. They drizzle the bratwurst sausage and bun with a lemon cream. Excellent. Everyone loved it. - Fleisch und käse ($16.00) - their charcuterie platter. Two types of cheese, three types of meat, dill pickles, red cabbage and a couple slices of bread. This was decent but you don't get much. Skip it (or get the wurstplatte instead). - Wurstplatte ($16.00) - three types of sausage. Good portion, delicious and the dipping sauce was an excellent accompaniment. - Roasted potato wedges ($6.00 large) - good sized wedges and with a wicked homemade curried ketchup sauce. Was the best out of the three sides. - Cucumber dill salad ($6.00 large) - very simple but I liked the addition of radishes to the cucumber and doll. Bree rolled her eyes at this one. - Warm potato salad ($6.00) - same. Simple but I liked the slight level of heat they added to the potatoes. Cartago is a solid, solid spot. Happy to see more and more places like these open up in town. Definitely worth a visit.

Salvator Doppel Bock, Cucumber Dill Salad, Grilled Cheese Berlin, Warm Pretzel, Fleisch Und Kase Cool spot that my homie wanted to try. Beer selection here is pretty dope. I suggest getting a Belgium or German beer cause this place is pretty much all German dishes. Dill Salad was pretty good for a 4 dollar side. The grilled cheese here though is so good. Not a traditional grilled cheese, but it's stuffed with sauerkraut and ham I think. Whatever, thing was so bomb. I'd eat it again for sure. Pretzel was dope as well, came with 2 dipping sauces. The meat and cheese board had some good stuff on it, wish there were more cheese though. Located in Forest Heights, this is a weird spot for such a good pub. The interior is clean and slick, and it's a perfect spot for afterwork beers. The small plates and food options make it so much better as well. Service was knowledgeable and friendly. Would go back fa sho. Sal says: Just Try It (3.5/5) Joanna says: It was bright and cozy, the cucumber salad was fresh af, and the grilled cheese was stellar. Good selection of beer.

Admittedly, we went on its 3 week, on August 15th....this would still explain the kitchen's time to turn over an order.... This being said, I am giving it a 3 because it is a great location for a part of town that is benefitting from a spot to go, after work or before dinner, to have a little something to drink or eat.... I feel it is more toward the 2.5 actually.... So, our evening started easy enough, everyone there definitely knows when you aren't part of the neighbourhood as we walked in and got a few stares as we made our way to a table. Because I had heard it is a place that is moving toward the "aperitivo" portion of the evening, I was looking forward to coming. Alas, it isn't there yet, and I wonder if it ever will be. The food is a bit confusing because some of it is "shareable" and "appetizer-like" and then there are other dishes that are more individual and "larger". Based on what the selection was (for me, not great), we ordered the large Pretzel, Cucumber Dill Salad (small bowl with pickled cucumbers and sliced onion) and Roasted Potato Wedges. The beer selection is GREAT...this I will not deny. The food....not as pleasing to me. The roasted potato wedges were by far the best of the 3.... HOWEVER, it took well over 30 minutes to get our food having already almost finished our beers. Again, I am hoping by now things in the kitchen have streamlined and people are not waiting to long.... The food is not particularly inspiring to me for it being a spot to have a beer after work. On this note, you definitely have to be a meat eater as most all the dishes that could be of any interest are meat based. Again, they are DISHES for individual consumption, NOT appetizers or aperitivo style which I was told it would be, hence why I went. Glad it is there for the area as it IS a great space with big windows :-) and walkable to all that live in the area :-)

It's a good place to get a drink. A great variety of domestic and international beers. The menu features Germany cuisine. Having seen the simple appliances in the kitchen, it's reasonable to not have very high expectation on taste of the food. A good place for drink but not really for food.

This is a trendy little beer and Appetizer bar in the 'hood. It's new. Has a cement spartan warehouse feel. Large windows. Staff are very personable! I hope that lasts. Acoustics are bad, they need baffles. They specialize in German Beers! Having just returned from Germany I was certainly in the know. They have a list of appetizers that focus on cheeses, prepared meats and pretzels. Appies were reasonable around $15. Beers on tap are $9. Bottled German beers are $10 to $11 (a little expensive I thought) but other beers are $6 to $7. The German beers on tap were good, but their witbier was was filtered. (If you are a purist Blind Enthusiasm has an unfiltered witbier on tap that tastes the same as ones I had in Germany) All in all a pleasant experience. They also have a Sunday brunch menu!

    I am yelping at Cartago!

The sale prices on brand name products are often very competitive - They'll sometimes post them on the road side sign. Prices posted in store often (if not always) have the tax included too (specified on the sign). They seem to manage to get more promotional items per volume than other places, so if you're looking for an Oilers glass, Eskimos toque, or branded cocktail picks, this is where they're at! The jury is still out on the newest pizza joint in east Edmonton that isn't total franchise…read moregarbage. Birch & Bear offers good beer, but average and overpriced pizza (by the pie or by the slice). Feels like this place is still in beta testing mode, having opened fairly recently in the space formerly occupied by the distinctly haughty and thus misplaced Fleisch. The neighbourhood has been looking forward to finally having a down-to-earth, cool date night spot to occupy this scenic location across from the discount gas station. My spouse and I have been twice, once for weekday lunch and once for Saturday supper. Plenty of local beer to choose from, just cans, but that's OK. Edmonton has a fabulous craft beer scene, and several brewers are represented including the now ubiquitous Sea Change. We've tried two pizzas, first the soppressata and pesto, then the capicola and sambal pineapple. The first pizza was not bad, but despite the pesto not being overwhelming, the meat flavour was surprisingly muted. The second pizza was just bland, the pineapple had little fruit flavour nevermind sambal. Very disappointing - not a ham & pineapple fail, that's unCanadian! It was a bit better the next day eaten cold for breakfast, but we still would not order it again. I feel part of the problem is the cheese, perhaps it is not good quality. Even though this style of pizza is not overwhelmed with cheese, which is great, the cheese is simply there, not adding much flavour, and honestly it just dulls out everything else. Why are the flavours so lacklustre? I can only assume the ingredients are as well, because it's made fresh and with obvious care right in front of you. What a shame! Perhaps the "Birch" (vegetarian) pizza offerings are better, because the flavour combos sound amazing. Others reviewers have dislike for the crust. Again it is not particularly flavourful, but it is thin, hand tossed and cooked nicely so that it is soft without being soggy but solid enough to hold up well. I like it fine, but my spouse was not terribly enthused, it's just "OK" to him. I look forward to trying some other things, like their salads. They also offer Yelo'd ice cream by the scoop. With a high school nearby, this place should have a license to print money. A small pack of students stopped by for a slice and a scoop during our lunch hour visit. We had the same server both visits, and she was attentive and efficient without being imposing or interrupting at bad times. She was also dressed sports casual, awesome, I hate getting an unwanted side order of tits with my beer. It's not a sports pub, there's no TVs, and no dafties in skimpy outfits pretending to flirt with old dudes. How refreshing! On the Saturday night, they were a bit overstaffed/training newbies, and I got to watch for some time as two young men (prep cook and dishwasher) horsed around, pulled off each others hairnets, and took selfies. Noobs - everyone knows this happens, but you have an open kitchen dummies! This is a neighbourhood full of cranky old white people, that kind of display is not going to go over well. Harrumph! As an aside, I gotta say I am kinda over the cartoon art in these YEG local beer/pizza/burger/ramen joints. It's getting Fritz the Cat level creepy, and we ain't paying kiddie prices here! Anyhow, I'm keeping my hopes up, will visit again, but so far it's only 3 stars for the newest branch of B&B. Maybe lunch time is the best time to visit.
