Wow, where to start! The Bar Method is my absolute favorite place in the world for workouts. I started my fitness journey five years ago, taking CrossFit classes that never seemed to fit to me nor show any physical improvement for myself, and I wasn't sure why. A year ago I found out I have a connective tissue disorder that makes it incredibly hard for my muscles to be able to engage the way other people's do. My doctor recommended I try low impact workouts and that's when I came across The Bar Method. Right from my first class I knew this was the place for me! Every single instructor I have had in the past year (Liz, Shelby, Liz, Kate, Sam, Mariana, Jenna) has been incredible, not only at correcting my form when I was just starting out, but also at offering modifications when an exercise might've been too much for me. As someone with an "invisible" disability, one that affects every single muscle and joint in my body, I never thought that I'd be able to work out without pain. The Bar Method, and every single one of its instructors, has showed me that movement isn't supposed to be painful. I do not have enough words to describe the impact this studio has made to my quality of life. Even on those days where my disability is too much, I never skip a class because I know that there are still ways to give it my all, with modifications and taking it slow. The classes are beneficial and instructors are super friendly and knowledgeable about the exercises they are teaching. Everyone is treated with the utmost respect and genuine care for your well being....even the owner has made an impact on me through our discussions about membership and what is truly right for me. My first class here was really great. They were very welcoming, they had sweat towels available to you, a water station. They explained where everything was. Within the room itself they gave you a little pad to sit on, your ball was all set up for you, and they showed you where to get your weights. Everything was right where you needed it and everything that you needed throughout the session was brought to you otherwise. The course felt like a true Pilates class, and that it was very focused, and I felt like the stretches were all very appropriate and really stretched the muscles that we had just exercised. I didn't have this experience in other classes. The room was large, but light and relaxing. The instructor would walk around and make notes on your form if your form was incorrect, but would do so in a way that was appropriate. She knew everybody's name which was incredible. She didn't need a headset, the room was very calm and she was able to be heard. It was a really productive class and everyone was super helpful. read more

Oh my gosh this place was tough! But that's a good thing. If you're going to work out, you might as well do it right and get the most out of it as possible. I came here with a trial day from Yelp, and I found the staff helpful and nice. There is a parking garage behind it, but depending on when to go you'll have to pay or park farther. There are also lockers for your items. The instructor was helpful and corrected my form when needed. So many pulse moves. You aren't running around the room but your body will be on fire. Obviously most the other people in the class were very aware of the procedure (what equipment to grab when and when to put it back) that I had to watch the others to follow as instructions were sometimes more implied than said. It's nice to work out in a room full of ladies, but it was some serious strength moves, so men would benefit from this workout. They have different plans for time or sessions, and while it's a little expensive for me personally at full price, I'll keep an eye out for Groupon specials because it is really an intense workout that I could see how it would benefit from continuous use. read more

I absolutely love bar method. There is no better workout in my opinion. I use to go to west Caldwell studio but after it closed I was so sad. I found Montclair and am so happy because they have so many class options it makes it really convenient. They have a parking lot in back and it's always has spots, although I haven't been in winter. The changes you see in your body are almost immediate but I go at least 3 times a week for my best results. I highly recommend everyone any body shape try bar method. I took a trial class as part of Yelps wellness week, and didn't know what to expect since i've never done a barre class before. I've done classical ballet training in my teenage years but didn't know how closely this would resemble that. The answer: little to none. The class begins with warm ups, goes through different parts of the leg from glutes, quads, calves, and wears each muscle out by performing repeated micro movements. By the end I didn't feel like I burned many calories, nor did I sweat, but it was a great body awareness experience. The studio itself is beautiful. Clean, well kept, and aesthetic. They have everything you need--water, towels, lockers, even a free coffee bar. The instructor is wonderfully kind and patient for newcomers like me. read more

I don't often write gym/ fitness reviews but I can't help but to share my amazing experience at The Bar Method in Montclair. Luckily I scheduled a morning class so it was very easy to find street parking. I walk into the studio and see a chalk board welcoming me by name (a very welcoming touch that set the tone for how friendly, welcoming, and personable the entire environment is. I received a quick tour of the studio before class then got to work. The studio was clean, organized, and set up for the class to start. Everyone was warm and encouraging from the instructor to the other members. Not to mention it felt like the time just flew by. I'd definitely recommend Bar Method to anyone who wants a nice paced core workout that doesn't make you feel overwhelmed. I definitely plan on returning. read more

Bar Method is located in downtown Montclair and parallels to a parking lot. It was a little hard for me to find the studio but after asking a few people I finally found it. Once you enter, you'll have to walk up about two flights of stairs and then you'll be greeted. Since it took me forever to find the place, I ended up missing 10 minutes of the class and had to rush to get in. They have a small locker area where you can put your belongings into and it comes with a key chain that you must take with you. The instructor was amazing and loved how she was able to correct me every time I made a mistake. The exercises were challenging since I worked muscles I never used before. The class was pretty enjoyable and felt very stretched out. The atmosphere was perfect and the staff was awesome! read more

I wanted to wait a full 3 months before I left a review to ensure that I had enough experience to be fair. Well 3 months and 60 classes later, I can give this my highest rating. I was having a very bad year having lost my mother in September and was feeling depressed, sluggish, and completely out-of-shape. I live a block away from the studio and decided to finally give it a shot. The first class was hard... like effin' HARD!! About 3 minutes in, I was beginning to wonder what the frig I had gotten myself into. How are these 2 lbs weights rocking me so hard?! Why are my legs shaking comically so?! I was cursing the svelte and perky instructor who memorized my name immediately (which I've come to learn that all the instructors do). Somehow I got through the hour and walked home with spaghetti legs. I never knew I could get a cramp in my ass! The next day, sore as all heck, I was also craving another workout. Thus my addiction began. I have now been going about 5 times a week (with the rare streak of going all 7 days). I had never had a gym membership, much less worked out early in the morning. Now my day is not complete without my 5:30am bar workout. With just minor modifications to my diet, I have lost 14 lbs and inches off my hips, waist, and legs in just three months. And I'm kind of obsessed with my newly toned arms. So yeah, I sound like a commercial (albeit one with filthy language) but I really do believe in this. Not only is it changing my body but it has also changed my outlook. I am finally coming out of my sad slump and feeling great. I sleep better, eat better, and just feel better. Shout out to my regular awesome instructors (Alex, Ally, Nicole, Lauren, Karen, Jess H, Sabina... though every instructor I've taken class from has been great)! Yes, it's expensive. The first time I went was on a Sunday and I told the front desk person I was new. She was unfriendly and didn't offer me any information. I had to ask her to please tell me where to put my shoes and personal items. She pointed and did not actually explain anything to me. She was too busy chatting up the teacher. I went 3 more times that week and never felt comfortable or welcome except for a class taught by a friendly sub named Natalie. On the 4th and last time I went, I was met by an unfriendly desk person and teacher...I asked if I needed socks for class because I had forgotten them and the teacher replied yes in a nasty way. No information after that. I asked if I could buy them and they pointed to where they were... I purchased a pair of socks and then went by the lockers, only to hear two other women coming in and saying they forget their socks. These women were immediately offered to borrow socks...Why was I treated differently? I am a new mom and was hoping to find a place to go to with nice, friendly women. It took a lot to get out of the house and then drive to Montclair and back. I was hoping for a kind, health enthusiastic community of women, but instead found a cold place. Thanks to The Bar Method I have now discovered a new workout that I absolutely love! The instructors were so great and patient and take the time to help fix your postures when they're incorrect. The only issue I had was with parking, it was really difficult to find parking as the studio is located on a main avenue in Montclair. There is a parking garage but as it is used by everyone visiting the area it's not really an option. I would have to leave my house very early to find parking, if you will attend these classes make sure to give yourself ample time to find a spot. I hope they find a solution for the parking soon as that was a major turnoff for me unfortunately. read more

I'm pretty much in love with the Bar Method, and I tell everyone about it. The Montclair staff is kind and helpful, and the studio itself is quite pretty. It's admittedly expensive in comparison to a gym, but there's never been a workout that I've wanted to attend so consistently so I consider it to be worth it. I try to go five times a week. Most importantly, the bar method works! I saw results in the first few weeks, and that got me hooked. Plus, it does wonders for my energy level throughout the day. I have been doing bar method for 4 solid months now- and am absolutely obsessed. My butt looks better than it did when I was a 16 year old cheerleader.. I'm 31 now btw- and my body looks and feels amazing. I go 5-6 times a week, and totally hooked. My favorite part about bar method is that I can do it at any stage in my life. I can do bar method pregnant and even when I'm a senior citizen. I am now a bar method lifer. I love the owners Kelly and Shannon, and the staff members are all wonderful. All the women at this gym are HOT and of different age groups and ethnicities. They are all motivated women who know how to maintain themselves. This place renews my hopes and dreams of becoming a prima ballerina. I have always been a fan of long and lean movements to achieve optimal body tone. I am a pilates veteran, so when I heard Athleta was partnering with local businesses like The Bar Method to celebrate their grand opening, I had to give it a try! The location is in the middle of chic Montclair, (conveniently across the street from a Lulu) and provides tons of parking in the back. (Thank you god!) I came here on a Thursday night around 630 and had no problem parking or finding the place. When I arrived the instructor asked my name and then repeated it and welcomed me. (definitely a plus!) The locker rooms are modern and smell amazing. I don't know what they spray in there, but I want it for my house! The studio is fully carpeted (and soft too!) You're told to get light weights and then class begins. The instructor goes right into everything. There's no stopping and it's very flowing. Throughout the duration of the class, the instructor will call out participants names and correct their forms. I actually really like that they do this...many standard gyms DO NOT. As easy as it may look, trust me it's not. The warm up with all arms nearly killed me. If I thought that was tough, the barre work is even crazier. (a good crazy though!) My friend and I signed up for the new client special which was reduced to $75 for one month unlimited classes. I have only done two classes so far and can already feel my seat slightly lifting. This class has also made me become more aware of my posture throughout the day. I supplement these workouts with pilates/yoga/running the other days. I have also become way more conscious of what I've been eating. I generally will consume lighter meals now. Being in front of that mirror really has an impact! I would say definitely take advantage of any new client specials they have. They are expensive but so worth it. You can even take your first class for free. read more

Fantastic studio! Just took a class with Elizabeth A, and she's amazing--high-energy, hilarious, encouraging, and very concerned with form! In fact, I've enjoyed every teacher I've had there (not a regular attendee, but whenever I can!). The staff are so friendly and competent. In terms of the workout, it's standard Bar Method, if you're familiar with the format. If not, give it a try! They have good new student discounts. The studio is very cute, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Bloomfield Ave, but overlooking the heart of Montclair Center. Clean facilities, and fabulous workout gear for sale. This place is fantastic! I have attended classes at the Bar Method in Montclair for over two years. The instructors and the 'Bar Method' deserve the highest accolades. As the workout focuses on small movements and correct positioning the caliber of the instructors is of upmost importance. The instructors offer the guidance to ensure that you are getting the most out of the class. I've noticed that I am definitely more toned and my posture has significantly improved. Bar method has changed me physically and mentally. With the exercises that tone your muscles in each part of your body, to the stretching and breathing exercises in between, I have never found another workout I enjoy more than barre. I actually like going to class and love the way I feel when I leave. The instructors and staff are extremely kind, helpful, and informative and they always have fun perks/incentives going on which is a bonus. Located in the center of Montclair right next to the Social Club, this place can easily be missed as it is on the second floor above another health facility. This was my first time trying out a group fitness class since I mostly work out one on one with a trainer. I arrived a few minutes late due to limited parking but I rushed into the class and tried to catch up. I assumed bar classes were mostly leg exercises but we started off working out our arms and doing push ups. I can do full body push ups but opted to do an easier form where i was on my knees and I also crossed my legs, which they told me to uncross. For me the posture and hip movements were unfamiliar and a little bit of a struggle for my first class. I also think I did not feel the workout as much as I should have I felt like the instructor kept calling me out a lot and they knew it was my first class, it would have been better to just guide me privately. The instructor also did not do a lot of the movements and exercises with us but rather explained them which made it more difficult than it needed to be for an introductory class. Overall, I prefer other kinds of fitness and classes and I'm not sure bar is meant for me. read more

Exercising alone has always been really hard for me. Finding the motivation seemed almost impossible. Even in other group classes at other gyms I would find myself wanting to leave in the middle of class. Now I look forward to working out. The workout is fun and challenging and has completely re-shaped my body. The amount of compliments I get from friends is exciting. I also feel great about myself. The confidence in myself and in my strength that I have gained from Bar Method is priceless. I found bar method Montclair on Yelp so it's time to give it a well deserved review. I started bar method over a year ago because I was bored of my usual boot camp and cardio classes. From the first class I was immediately hooked. The studio is beautiful and the teachers make the classes personable as well as make the students feel empowered. The classes are super hard but with the encouragement of the teachers you will not only get through it, you will also get stronger. I love that their clients ages range from young women to seniors. Also that it is safe for anyone that is injured or pregnant. Anyone that knows me knows how obsessed I am with bar method because it has made me love working out. Love Bar Method!! Started with Groupon and summer deal but have been monthly for almost a year. Tried another bar studio nearby in between my first two deals, but prefer Bar Method bc feel like I get more feedback and adjustments. I have umbilical hernia and diastasis and found these workouts manageable with adjustments (that instructors have helped me with and/or have always been open to). Started this after the birth of my second child, but I wish I'd started bar sooner and had been going throughout pregnancy. Parking can sometimes be a struggle but I've finally learned to just park two blocks away in first spot I see and walk. Instructors are great and feel like I can get a good all around workout in a 45 min express class. Classes are changed up enough to not feel boring and they also have restore and move classes too to mix things up. Different time options are helpful. Latest classes begin at 7:30pm and earliest 5:30am. Wish they had a 3:30/4pm weekday class (like weds or Friday), but the 5:30am is a great option bc if express can be out by 6:15am. Overall really love Bar Method and highly recommend!! read more

I've been a member here for over 2 years and I'm still amazed at how challenging the classes are. I love the familial environment, how each instructor knows every person in the class by name and pushes you to give your all yet still make sure you maintain proper form. Bar Method studio in Montclair is my favorite place to reset, recharge, and regain physical and mental confidence. - Pros: Beautiful facility (amazing view of the ceiling and/or Bloomfield Avenue during ab work!) with pleasant atmosphere, towels provided, free coffee bar, always clean and stylish! On-time, well-paced, quality workout with up-beat music (which helps 45-60 minute class fly by), weights and other class equipment provided. Class instructors are attentive and supportive to help you get the right postures and maximize your workout. There is always a new move to challenge you! Expect them to kick your ass, remember your name, and do this in their unique style. Studio staff and other students are very welcoming, friendly & knowledgeable. No attitude whatsoever. Bonus points for the supplies they stock in the locker area for members to use if you're going straight to work (perfume, hand cream, hair spray, etc.). There are lockers with keys provided so you can stow your purse during class. - Cons: Studio is in the busy part of Montclair so you might need to plan extra time for parking. If you are coming during busy hour (or during one of the wonderful runs YMCA organizes) and parking garage is full, plan to come earlier to find a spot along North Fullerton Street, Park Street, or even Chestnut Street. 5 minutes of walking will get you warmed up for a class! If you are looking for a different way to exercise, try this boutique gym and you will be amazed how effective the Bar Method routine is! read more

A wonderful, well-run studio with amazing, welcoming teachers. I've been coming here for 7+ years and the results have been great. This work out really works! But the reason I keep coming is for the community of dynamic and kind women (both teachers and fellow students) who have become my friends. I always want to go to class because I'll see a friendly face or have a great, supportive conversation. I always enjoy the work out, and even after 7+ years it NEVER gets easier. I am new to barre method but I am a total convert. This studio is amazing. The instructors are all kind, supportive, well trained and invested in everyone getting the best workout possible. I love that every time I am in class, they will pay attention to what I am doing and always offer a subtle correction to improve my form and execution of the exercise. In the three months since I have been working out, I see a dramatic improvement in my strength, flexibility, posture and balance. The workouts are always strenuous yet i never fear that I will injure myself due to the instructors' diligence in making sure that movements are done with proper alignment. I love that everyone works at their own level and by making small adjustments in how you are doing a certain movement, you can continuously make your own workout more challenging. When I first started, I had been experiencing terrible arm and shoulder pain and was about to start PT, yet after less than two weeks, my pain totally disappeared. Same thing with an old hamstring injury that caused my muscle to spasm. Both issues are now gone! The staff is warm and welcoming and I love that they learn everyone's name right away! I also feel the positive impact of these workouts in my swimming and dancing. I hold myself differently, my endurance is better and my muscles don't get sore any more. And parking is not a problem! There is a parking garage adjacent to the studio and I don't mind paying a dollar for the convenience. read more
