There are actually two spots with the same name within a couple of blocks from each other in the Inner Sunset. The cafe on 9th Avenue is more familiar to me since it feels more like a social hub, while this location feels more like a neighborhood haunt that attracts local regulars. All I know is that I waited a spell for the barista to pay attention to me. I ordered the $4 medium Cafe au Lait, and it was the type of place where she handed me a cup about a third full with steamed milk and expected me to fill the rest with the coffee from the urn (Photo 5). I didn't mind, but it did feed my impression of indifference to unfamiliar customers. Regulars appeared to receive more warmth. Oh well. Best hot chai latte! Quick service despite being a busy weekend morning. It's a bit of a tight squeeze to wait in there.

3/30/25 This was recommended by the kind lady at the Library (San Francisco Botanical Garden), about a 3-5 minute walk from there. It's cute, small with an indoor & outdoor seating amidst the bustling street where the metro passes by. The young lady took our order & struck up a quick & genuine conversation about our amazing 5 hour trip to buy a few woks from Chinatown. By the time we had a few blinks, a few shots, Hubby's oat milks latte was gone! It was hot & pretty good. Chill & easy going vibe, fairly quiet as patrons sat, drank & chatted. Sat by the street & composed a few post cards. You can bring your pup n sit outside whilst enjoying your beverage & company. The Beanery serves good coffee in a classic, old-school coffee shop environment. You can tell it's a spot frequented by locals. The staff are friendly, and the drinks are reasonably priced. The coffee aroma inside is wonderful. There is some seating, but I wouldn't recommend it for studying/working for long periods of time as it's a bit cramped. read more

This was more of a to go coffee spot. There are a couple small tables inside, but the park isn't too far off to go enjoy your coffee. I appreciate a shop that also sells coffee beans. The person at the register was really friendly. Unfortunately, I was in a rush, and I didn't realize my order was wrong. To be clear, this is the Beanery on 9th Avenue. I went in an ordered a decaf a few weeks ago and the one guy behind the counter made a joke that the other guy "didn't believe in decaf." I, being a healthcare worker, said "What about people with heart conditions?" They continued to joke about it and handed me my coffee and said, "Here's your fully-caffinated coffee." I thought they were joking because we had a full conversation about my own heart condition. And guess what....they actually did give me fully-caffinated coffee. I had terrible palpitations and wound up needing an EKG at work later that day. So if you love your rocket fuel, which I'm sure most of you do, go for it. But the disrespect and disregard for people who put trust in a neighborhood business is stearing me and every healthcare worker I know from right down the street of The Beanery (you know the hospital I'm talking about) away from this place. I know we take a chance when we go out that we'll get slipped regular coffee, but to actually have the conversation and have them joke about it and STILL get regular coffee, that's f'd up, guys. The bf and I were in the area and wanted coffee from both Snowbird and this place. Since we were coming from UCSF, we went to Snowbird and Arizmendi before ending our walk here. We ordered an oat milk latte. We took notice that not only does this place charges extra for dairy alternative but they also charge extra for half n half too?? I was holding a cup from Snowbird and a bag of bread from Arizmendi. The cashier immediately and in a really rude tone told me I couldn't be inside with outside food. I get that places don't want people grabbing stuff from other shops and then taking up tables at their place, but we also bought drinks from Beanery too, so I don't see what the problem was. We are paying customers. We should have just canceled our order right then and there and left. That lady was excessively mean!! Sheesh!!! Does this place expect people to not patronize other shops along this street? We were making our rounds up and down the street so we had a bunch of stuff accumulated with us. We shook off the super rude vibes and I went to wait outside with my outside food. My bf grabbed our Beanery drinks and we grabbed a table outside. There were plenty of tables. After all, this was late Thursday afternoon, totally after the lunch rush. Sometime later, that same lady was off shift and she yelled at us as she passed by us saying, "I thought I told you weren't allowed here with outside food!!" And proceeded to the crosswalk. Honestly? Was that necessary? If The Beanery had a 0 tolerance for any outside food regardless of how much we purchased from their business, then say so politely. There was no reason to talk to us like we kicked her child or something. This lady was extremely rude and livid towards us for no good reason. I hope whoever is in charge of The Beanery has a word with her about her attitude. The coffee here was only ok, oat milk totally scalded and not worth the extra 60 cents. The Beanery also didn't have any noteworthy pastries or menu items we were interested in purchasing. We definitely won't be back. I tried the beanery a couple months ago and it's been one of my go-to spots to study and get coffee in the sunset! I get their iced caramel lattes, which is a hit or miss depending on the day, sometimes it's good but sometimes I feel like I'm just drinking a sugary cup of milk. Their pastry's on the other hand are always consistent and fresh. I highly recommend their raisin buns, morning buns, and croissants. The only downside is that they don't warm them up. The inside is small but it's more of a to go place so there's almost always seating available (inside and outside). The staff here are very blunt and straight to the point, so you're most likely not gonna get your typical friendly cafe service lol. But the clientele (mostly locals who live in the neighborhood) are all so nice, and it's almost impossible not to strike up a conversation and meet someone new while while you're there! read more

It's a cute little coffee shop on the quiet part of Irving, however, there is not much seating (maybe like 5 tables that fit 1-2 people each at most) so beware of this if you are trying to do work. I would say this place is more of a grab-n-go type of coffee shop. The customer service was excellent! The baristas were extremely nice, giving me recommendations and making sure that my drink was exactly how I wanted it. Again, I'm not a huge coffee person so I can't comment much on the coffee taste, but I will say it didn't just taste like bitter water! I liked it a lot and it was definitely on the cheaper side. A double shot latte cost me about $4. Overall, if you're passing by, I recommend coming in and giving it a try. Good coffee, good people, good prices. "Cody, can Daddy please go and get an iced coffee?" The Cody signature head-shake. This meant a hard-no. "And wow, Daddy can go with Cody to get a treat inside!" Oof, head-shake again. And with one arm wrapped around your belly and the other fiddling with a wallet, credit cards, and hand-wipes, I managed to order a lightly toasted bagel with jam and a large iced Vietnamese coffee. Prices were extremely competitive, it didn't cost more than $8. With the goods, I brought us to sit on the benches just several paces up the sidewalk. The first gulp of the caffeine was paradise, although this style may have been too sweet for my taste. You, on the other hand, had no such complaints from the sugary bagel. In fact, you were enthralled. "Yeah Cody, a bagel is like a circle bao-bao." I repeated, almost absent-mindedly, as I tore small pieces slathered in jam and holding them before your mouth.You gnawed each piece in absolute delight. I continued to whisper thoughts in your ear as they come across my mind. "Cody, you know, when you are older, maybe we can come to the Beanery together in the early mornings."
