When my friend mentioned this shop to me recently, I kept mishearing the name and thought she kept…read moresaying "Shabbywacky" , a name inspired by Lewis Carrolls' nonsensical poem "Jabberwocky". So when I stood outside the store and read "Shabby AND Wacky", I was expecting highly unusual items for sale. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the decor and the many items on sale in a small shop. I was even bold enough to ask to see the homewares and furnishings at the back in the workshop/storage area. There were numerous second hand pieces - chairs, tables, mirrors - which were ready to be upcycled. I enjoyed browsing round but my only criticism is the pricing. My friend enquired about a large mirror and the asking price was £200! I can understand if the business was in a very affluent, cosmopolitan area with a number of other independent, stylish stores which offered similar wares or competitive prices. But this store is tucked away in a small shopping precinct surrounded by takeaways, fast food outlets and a charity shop. It does stand out from the other stores but nothing that I hadn't seen before. It is a lovely shop and I would recommend it, but only if you are in the vicinity or if you want that little bit something different to hire for weddings/parties like a candy trolley. Here, you may find small gifts, accessories and knick knacks which are "vintage or retro-inspired", pretty to behold and inspiring. If you do decide to purchase, might be worth trying to barter a decent price first...overall, an interesting experience.

The reason is simply that they sell good quality furniture that last for years and the staff are extremely courteous and helpful. Cookes is a family run business that has been around for years and they are now one of the largest independent furniture retailers in the UK, selling brands such as Ercol, Tempur and Natuzzi. Yes you have to pay more than you would for flat pack goods from Argos and the designs may not be as fashionable as say Ikea but if you're after traditional furniture that won't go out of fashion then head down to Goosemoor Lane. They have a huge selection spread over two floors and the furniture is displayed in room settings to help you imagine how it will look in your own home. If you're a regular customer or are making a huge purchase it's worth asking if there are any deals to be done. If you fancy a drink or something to eat after browsing then head to the top floor to Two Jays' Restaurant. They offer both hot and cold dishes which are produced daily, fresh from the kitchen. I can recommend the apple pie!

To be a garden centre or a nursery or not to be a garden centre or a nursery? That is the question…read more It seems these days that many nurseries eventually diversify along the garden centre route - installing cafes, aquatics centres and farm shops. Fortunately, Hirons continues to buck the trend. This has always been and continues to be an actual functioning nursery providing high class garden and house plants to Birmingham families for years. Hirons retains its old fashioned feel, and hasn't changed since I used to visit here with my dad - who loves the place to bits incidentally. There's no smoke or mirrors here. You can see the staff getting there hands dirty, potting up the wonderful plants on old newspaper that they've actually grown on site. Garden centres have their place, but if you're a plant lover first and foremost this is the place for you. The staff at this family run firm really know their stuff, and you'll leave with unusual plants and specialist potting soil rather than a goldfish and a pot of homemade marmalade.

My favourite bit though is the drive. Each delivery the store receives causes a traffic back up because trucks really cannot fit through the gates but always try. Its an old business but remains a refreshing stop in the Perry Barr neighborhood.
