Being a ginger as soon as my hair gets over a certain length it starts to glow and become a ginger fro so I need to keep it trimmed and until now I haven't had a barber who did such a good job in sheering it down as James at Skinny Isaac's. Before I get in to the cut itself, I must mention the decor and set up at SI's. The place oozes suave sophistication. The black and white tiled floor is a throwback to old school barber shops yet the wall murals and ornamental guitars create a modern feel. They've clearly taken a look back at everything that was good about traditional barbering and added the new modern modern twists to improve their craft. There's an airy feel to the second floor premises, sun light bathes the studio creating a really nice environment to relax in. One thing to note is that you'll have to make an appointment at SI's. They will be booked up mist days so make sure you call first thing to see if you can get a slot. They are also open Monday's (during Queens term time) which is a bonus. A haircut will set you back £16 - an absolute bargain once you experience the attention to detail each barber puts in to their work. All in all a five star service and a top notch hair cut. First up, let's talk about the decor. You'll immediately notice the awesome 'urban' murals on the the walls - Biggie and Tupac dominate the landscape. They also have snap back caps hanging on the walls and a flat screen showing all the latest UFC. It's a real mans paradise! Haircut wise it's great, the owner/barber is traditional with a modern twist and he seems to be able to do any style imaginable. They accept walk ins but if you're getting a design done it's best to book ahead. I walked in and was in the chair less than a minute after walking in! The cut itself was neat and tidy and only took around 20 minutes - perfect for your lunch break. My hair cost £9 which is a snip in the current climate! The owner told me of their ambitious plans to make The Urban Barbers somewhat of a man sanctuary offering a whole range of male treatments including the dreaded nose wax! He's a hard man to please so when he came back very happy with his haircut, I knew it was safe to take my son there. No 1 son has the most oddly thick tufty hair you've ever seen so taming it isn't easy but the lovely Spanish lady who cut it did a really good job. She happily put up with his grumpy monosyllabic conversation and valiantly worked round his nodding head when he almost fell asleep. A kids cut cost £9.95 which isn't the cheapest I've paid but better that than getting a one style suits all job done in the barbers for a few pounds less. The interior of the salon is absolutely gorgeousand I was particularly impressed by the original oil paintings on the walls. Whoever did the interior design really knows what they're about. Nice cup of tea for me was a nice touch too.

Busy as usual when I arrived but with 4 barbers working, it's not long till I'm in the chair. I may have alluded before that I'm not 'hip' or 'trendy'. It's certainly the case with hairstyles too, but Sean was quick to give me some advice and selected a cut which would be easy for me to maintain. It's important to say what an impact a good haircut can have. That little boost of self esteem can help make a good day become a great day, and with an added bonus of having some craic while being attended to. Natalie is a very friendly person and can certainly fill the awkward silence that most experienced hairdressers cannot, while you are sitting in the chair. This shop is located directly opposite Union Street Bar meaning you can also have a spot of pub grub while your down there. Oh and they offer a range of services such as waxing, threading etc. Parking is available from 60p per hour in the public car park only 100 meters away.
