Wasn't too sure what to expect from a hotel restaurant, usually poor food with a massive markup…read more.. The food here was okay if a little confused/fussy! There are a few bonbydazzler's on the menu; melon with griddled pineapple, coconut and basil anyone? What were they thinking there- like the worst ready, steady, cook! mystery bag ever, poor Ainsley would be spinning in his chef's retirement home. We were sent out an amuse bouché of fried risotto balls which had so little flavour they just offered an unpleasant texture. Not very amusing at all, served with a cliche of balsamic vinegar. Then we were delivered olives and bread with olive oil and balsamic, meh... I started with the Ham Hock, piccalilli and sourdough. It tasted pretty good but was presented like a raw burger with a squashed slug across the plate. Far too much meat, the balance was well off, although it seemed to be the only starter to come without a coating of balsamic. The cheddar and onion tart was apparently nice but would improve with some onion chutney not drenched in the damn balsamic! Main course was apparently coq au vin. Not as I have ever had it before though. Only one bit of the chicken was cooked in wine the other a cheffy bone in supreme of chicken that was pan fried. There were a few chunks of gammon, some enoki mushrooms some undercooked shallots, leathery leeks and passable mash. This dish was largely free of balsamic but had its trendy cousin pea shoots liberally sprinkled over. This bastardised coq au vin wasn't really to my liking- had it all been cooked together in the traditional style it would have been great, unfortunately the chef wasted his time and effort cooking everything separately. Other meals largely met with similar criticisms, the salmon came with turned vegetables which looked totally naff! I opted for the local cheese board which was okay. I can't say how local the cheeses were as there was no information so I'll just take their word for it. After all Birmingham is well known for its dairy produce... It was served with celery, chutney and walnut bread, call me old fashioned but I'll take a Carr's water biscuit every time thank you! It was balsamic free however- I can only assume they had used it all in the previous courses. Other desserts were similarly hit or miss, the fruit selection even had star fruit on it which I assumed had become extinct as I haven't seen any since the 90's. The other main gripe was it took two and a half hours from sitting down to finishing dessert which was ridiculous. I understand that we were a table of eight but it was hardly busy, if the kitchen stopped buggering around with everything it would have taken half the time! The waitresses were very pleasant, if a little disorganised. The meal would have been much improved if they simplified the meals and stopped trying to impress with outdated fads and additions. I would happily pay a premium for a quality meal but this really wasn't! On a random point the light fittings were the worst I have ever seen; a chandelier surrounded by a semi transparent tube of plastic with the colouring of the bottom of a CD. If they employed an interior designer I hope their ideas book was sealed and buried, the designer sent to Broadmoor hospital for the criminally insane.

Nice, pleasantly decorated bedrooms. Plush bathrooms and very fluffy towels…read more Restaurant expensive and a little too poncy, so opted for bar meal instead. Excellent choice! Scampi very good, and superb "signature" chips. You get a little motorway noise, but nothing to worry about. Ceiling fans in bedrooms are a bonus in summer. Not needed early Movember, though! :-)

My best friend's wedding…read more.. The sun was shining, my nails were painted and my fascinator perfectly in place, the day had started well and was only going to get better. We were greeted by the ushers, taken down a beautiful hallway and seated in a dainty room ready for the ceremony. In came the bride, across went the vows, down came the tears and outside we all went. The Pimms was flowing and the 2 hour photo slot began. The backdrop is so beautiful that it wouldn't matter what the weather all the photo's would come out stunning. We walked down a path that leads to a tiny angelic garden and threw our confetti over the radiant bride and groom, it was wonderful. Afterwards we went through to the sun-drenched marquee for the wedding breakfast and speeches. The food was delicious - a succulent chicken breast with creamy dauphinoise potatoes and veg. As the evening drew nearer a separate part of the marquee was unveiled, revealing a dancefloor and more seating for the evening guests. Late on burgers and fish finger sandwiches were on offer but I had already eaten a slice of cake so the rest of my night had been put aside for dancing. If my friend hadn't got married here it would definitely have been a venue option for myself. Everything about the whole day was perfect. The venue, the staff and the food. I know the bride couldn't have been happier, neither could I.

Set in Wishaw, just a hair's breadth from the Sutton Coldfield border, most people familiar with…read morethe venue will have been introduced to it via a wedding. It's testimony to Moxhull Hall that many guests will then either return as paying, dining customers, or perhaps as a happy couple themselves; in turn revisiting post-honeymoon and repeatedly into their future. Moxhull gets raves, with many visitors already aware of the reputation before the experience. It is, it seems, difficult to go just once. But assessing its worth as a wedding venue is for a bride to tell you. Let's talk instead about its place as a stand-alone restaurant and hotel. The best thing about Moxhull is that it feels like neither. Rather, it feels like a secret; its beautiful grounds, entrance hall then friendly staff welcoming you to the brilliant, spacious bar and dining room that you can never quite believe are on site. Feeling like a grand but modern stately home, it's a stretch to think of any commercial enterprise being underway. Main dinner courses, as you may imagine, are not cheap, yet remain affordable, especially with a flat-rate applied to the number of courses rather than individual dishes. And if, after one night cap too many, you must leave the car, one of around 15 rooms should be available to you, subject to wedding bookings. You will feel it in your wallet of course, not too much, although perhaps enough to make you think twice. But it will be worth it and not the last time you lay your head there. It may be exclusive, but it wants to include you.

The Belfry Hotel & Resort Lichfield Rd, Sutton Coldfield…read more B76 9PR, United Kingdom Phone: +44 1675 238600 www.thebelfry.com We had a chance to stop by the historic Belfry on our way from Chester to Stratford-Upon-Avon to see the course and spend a fair amount of money in the pro shop. The course was impressive even though I was able to see just a few holes and the pro shop well-stocked with fairly reasonably priced gear. I bought a few hats, a waterproof pullover, and a few other items for me and my two sons. The pullover is perfect for the cool, wet days in the UK as well as our home in the Pacific Northwest, keeping me dry and reminding me of our trip to the Belfry every time I wear it. I will be sure to bring my clubs on our next trip to the area so I can play their three courses: The Brabazon, home of four Ryder Cups and one of the best courses in the UK; PGA National with its inland links appearance, fast-running fairways and cavernous bunkers; and The Derby, a par 70 parkland golf course. Gutted but have just come back from a stay and sad to say it will be my last... Ive been coming for…read morea few years now but the last few stays I have been in rooms that have a real damp, mouldy smell. This last stay was the worst. We were in a family room (had booked the family package) and the room smelt so bad I didnt sleep well and woke up feeling really dirty. My son couldnt smell it at first but when he got into bed he could. Its so bad I wonder if there is black damp behind the paper/paint. The room was also incredibly dirty. See pics. There were crumbs in the bed and all over the floor. I did tell the receptionist but she said she could only move us to another room in the building next to us and it will be exactly the same. She was a little patronising and made me feel bad for mentioning it. Last couple of minor bits... Flies at dinner and at breakfast, lots around the food. No conditioner and they didnt have any on site. So note that when you see they say they have toiletries that doesnt include conditioner. You have to pay for anything other then black coffee at breakfast, never ever had to pay for a latte but apparently its a specialty coffee so extra charge of a fiver. Bought a latte in the golf place next to the kids green and it was awful. Had two sips and left the rest. Despite having the family package I had to ask for the kids golf tickets, the sweet cart tokens etc. it was only because I had read up beforehand that I knew what was included. Oh and the picture shows a teddy and kids activity pack, the two kids with me didnt get anything. Lots of building work going on at the min. Hoping it will be somewhere new to sleep that will be fresh and clean. The kids go karts and the stuff on the green are good but not good enough to make us return. £18 each for a childs dinner buffet (not including drinks) is a little extortionate, as is charging a service charge on drinks when you have to go to the bar because nobody serves you. Could be an amazing place but needs work.
